Tuna had apparently been scarce and late arriving this year, but the commercial long-liners were unloading plenty during the week.
The trip itself is sold as a professional set-up, but not if your anything resembling a seasoned sea angler and will set you back 60 Euros for the chance to catch.
The boat itself is excellent for fishing and reaches the trolling grounds in around 30 minutes.
However, with just 6 rods rigged and these having been clearly well used and abused with reels not exactly full of line, the omens for serious fishing were not good.
Tuition for the first-timers was not the best and if you actually get a shout of “fish-on” you’ll be lucky from a group of around 8 normally ‘fishing’ (+ spectators on board) to actually handle a rod.
We did manage to catch one Tuna and lost 3 others, one due to a treble hook pulling clean from the well used lure and the two others may well have come aboard had the novice angler received better instruction.
However, the fish caught was filleted at sea and some was cooked immediately for those aboard.
To Summarise –
Good Points: The boat is the best angling boat in Paphos harbour, the skipper and mate are friendly, freshly cooked Tuna is excellent and an enjoyable time was had by all aboard.
Bad points: The gear needs updating, the chances of catching one fish per person are slim and if you’re looking for serious blue-water fishing, then Paphos is probably not the place to be.
