As we like Mexican food, my wife and I made a point of trying Rio Grande. We went quite early in the evening and were almost their only customers. Nevertheless, we still waited for the best part of an hour for our food. My fillet steak was just about OK but my wife's T-bone steak was so tough as to be inedible. The service was pretty poor with the staff disinterested in us. We just left with a promise never to return.
As it happens, Rio Grande is so next door to The Bay that you could step over the low wall between them in a trice and, once in The Bay, you will find really top notch food and a friendly service that will draw you back repeatedly. Also, The Bay seems to have a reputation for being expensive just because of its slightly more 'restaurant' look yet our experience was that there is no difference at all between the cost of eating well in The Bay or poorly in Rio Grande. By the way, one reviewer comments on the paucity of Mexican restaurants in Paphos (Rio Grande is the only one in Coral Bay) but there is another place on the main road into Kato Paphos, on the left as you approach Paphos, but, sadly, we found that to be little better than Rio Grande.
One other puzzle is that Rio Grande is owned by the same group of businessmen who operate The Romantica in Paphos. The Romantica has been one our absolute favourite places to eat in Cyprus for some years so how is it that these two, sister, restaurants can be so different?
Other reviewers have said nice things about Rio Grande so perhaps we just had an unfortunate experience; anyone can have an 'off night', but we still won't return.
