“not really a lot to see”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2013

There are certainly many more interesting archaeological sites to visit in Cyprus than this one - but they are all Greek - the difference with this one is that is preceeds the Greeks by thousands of years - so hence it is more interesting but also not so interesting in that there isn't an awful lot to see. I would recommend leaving this till last - only when you have exhausted everywhere else is this probably worth a visit!

“Worth a visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2013

It's hard to believe, & take in, that this site dates back 9,000 years. It's easy to miss it from the road side & is not one that's listed by the travel companies but it's definitely worth visiting if, like us, you're able to drive yourselves round & explore. We were lucky in that we stayed with friends & had use of their 2nd vehicle.
The site has several boards situated around, giving explanations of the history & how life was back then. I found it quite eerie to learn that the 'living' carried on, dwelling in their home, with relatives buried beneath the floor!
Loved the peaceful, quiet surroundings & lack of tourists; it meant that lizards were brave, coming to sunbathe & supervise the few who were there!
It's not suitable for the infirm & you'd need to watch small children, from a health & safety point of view.
The information boards & reconstructed parts enable the visitor to form a good impression of how things were, despite there being not a lot left of the original structures.

“The neolithic site”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013

The neolithic site of Cyprus gives an interesting view on the live style of the pre-ceramical and pre-metal culture.

Place is situated in the middle of the way from Limassol to Larnaka. So it is easy accessible by car or by bicycle if you base in village hotels of Kalavasos.

“choirokitia”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013

choiros means pig as it was first thought this place was pig farms. However it was later discovered to be homes. Three homes are beautifully reconstructed at the start of the trail, where you can also se how they buried their dead ones inside the houses.
Be sure to take a leaflet where you buy a ticket, It explains how the buildings were reconstructed using the original methods

“Great Neolithic Site”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2013

This site is a great find. It is a Neolithic Site whose inhabitants did not have ceramic or bronze - they were stone age dwellers. Why is this so important? This village demonstrates human beginning to form the basis of society -- dating back to 7000 BCE. This site is one of the most important sites in all of Cyprus. It is rare that such a site is so readily available to tourists. It is close to the main highway - and so often bypassed. There are reconstructions (recreations) of a few representative buildings and the main entrance to the village. This is so much more informative than what you find at a Greek/Roman site. Once you view the 'finished' product, climb the hill to the actual excavations and look at what the archeologists had to work with. Look closely and you will see day to day stone tools, bowls, grain mills and the like. When you have finished this site drive another 6 kilometers down the B-6 toward Paphos and visit a site called 'Tenta'. It too is worth the visit.
