“Wonderful Church”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2013

Amazing church in Larnaca town center built around the Saint Lazarus tomb.
I am no theological expert but understand the importance of Lazarus in the bible, resurrected by Christ and eventually to become Bishop here in Larnaca, incredible really.
The church is a magnificent example of the Cypriot Orthodox faith and beautifully decorated.
Don't miss this one its not the biggest, richest, or solitary religious sites but still makes it in to my top 3.

“Beautiful attraction”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

Ayios Lazaros church in Larnaca is one of the most beautiful churches in Cyprus. Lazarus as many of you may know was the first bishop of Cyprus, and according to the new testament was revived by Jesus after he was dead for days. A very important religious site for the locals, and a must see for tourists staying in Larnaca, as it is a short stroll from the phinikoudes area where most ofl the cafes are on the beach

“A Priority Attraction of Religious, Historical or Cultural Importance!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013

The magnificent 9th century stone church was built by Byzantine Emperor Leo VI -9th century and it was restored the 17th century.
It is one of the most remarkable examples of Byzantine architecture in Cyprus.

Saint Lazarus came to Cyprus after being resurrected by Jesus. He was ordained as Bishop of Kition by the Apostles Barnabas and Paul and lived here for 30 years. His tomb can be seen under the sanctuary. Be sure to visit the tomb of the Saint –it gives you a very intense feeling of peace. I believe I cannot describe it with words.

The building incorporates many elements from the history of Cyprus and all these are found in one structure..
When the island came under Frankish and Venetian rule, the Church became Catholic so extra elements such as the Frankish Gothic style pediment and Italian style interiors were added. The visitor will surely admire the magnificent baroque iconostasis which was made during the time Cyprus was under the Venetian rule, however the artist was a Cypriot.

There is a cemetery at the very back of the Church. On the grave stones there are symbolic carvings in different languages. (French, Greek, Italian, who were the elite of that period.
I believe no matter if you are a Christian, a Catholic or even if you are not that religious, a visit here is a Must!
The Church is worth seeing even for the cultural and historical importance. If the guest is religious perhaps he will feel closer to God!

“Tomb of Lazarus”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2013

This is a 'must see' church. Though small, was built as a shrine to Saint Lazurus, who was the first BIshop of Cyprus and whose tomb is in the basement of the church and is open to visitor;bit creepy.

“A spiritual travel back in history”

Entering the Church you feel that a strong wave of spirituality has passed from here. If you are there in silence you feel a connection with the divine. Every stone and every icon have so much meaning.
