The Good: The hotel is located directly across the street from the train station, which is exactly what I was looking for. The lobby, bar and restaurant were very appealing. The daytime staff were extremely polite and helpful. Breakfast was adequate. However, I didn't much care for the scrabled eggs with creme fraiche blended in. They were like soup! I had a traditional meal of smoked pork neck, lima beans and potatoes which was absolutely delicious, but, like everything else on the menu, was far over priced.
The bar has a fine selection of beer, including Kwak and Duvel on tap, at very reasonable prices per glass. The lady working the bar was quick with the refills, and friendly
My room was clean and quiet. The bed was actually a king-size, which was a pleasant surprise, since I am over 2 meters tall.
The Not So Good: My reservation mentioned that if I reserved for two nights, I would receive 40% off and a free gift upon my arrival. My room rate was very reasonable, so I assume the 40% had already been taken off, however, I received no gift. I noted in my reservation that I wanted to purchase a Luxembourg City Card when I got there. I was given a brochure on the City card as I was CHECKING OUT! Too late!
The toilet seat was broken - cracked all of the way through. I'll spare the details, and simply say I didn't notice it was broken until after.... OUCH!
The tiles in the shower were cracked as if someone had beaten them with a hammer. The shower stall offers no shelf upon which to put your soap and shampoo.
The walls of the room are apparently very thin, as I could hear my neighbors phone ringing - and he/she was receiving calls all night long!
Although the thermostat in my room was turned all the way up, my room stayed cold. All of the lights in the room are controlled by a set of four switches located near the door. The switches are only active after you put your room key card in the slot (a feature I've always liked) but there seemed to be no logic, rhyme or reason to which switch you had to press in which direction how many times to get a given light to turn on! The shower room had flourescent lights, which took a while to come on, making the switch-pushing all the more fun!
On my first night, I stayed out rather late at night. The front doors were locked, and had no key card reader. I had to knock on the door for quite some time before someone finally let me in - and then brusquely demanded to see my key card. I was not very happy about that.
There have been comments made here about the hotel being located in the Red Light district. In reality, there is a Red Light street, if you will, near the hotel. If you're not actively looking for it, you're not even going to notice it. I was more concerned with the fact that there is a busy bus stop right outside the front door. Going in or out entailed working my way through a crowd of people waiting for, or getting off the bus.
Over-all, I enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The (daytime) staff, the food, the bar, and bed size win out over the negatives. Although I do wonder what my free gift was supposed to have been.
I probably would not choose to stay here at the full rate.
**NOTE - as I write this, I am waiting for what I HOPE was a deposit to be re-credited to my credit card. Almost twice the agreed upon rate was charged on the day I checked out . . .*
