“A Country pub that is hard to beat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2013

A friend and I were doing some exploring and neither of us had been here for some time and what a delight, a very pleasant country pub, great ambience, no music and customers in for a quiet pint.

Some good ales to choose from and a very pleasant evening all round, so good my firned booked dinner in the restaurant for him and his wife at the weekend.

I write this a business visitor - your needs may be different. I have visited about 5 times over recent years.
I first went to this place in fog. Scary! You leave the streetlights far behind and continue for a couple of miles before seeing their welcoming lights. As can be expected from such a remote location, the sleep quality was superb.
I was (sort of) greeted by the landlord who may be a little 'functional' when first met, but is all the better for knowing - he showed me the before and after photographs of the vicinity and explained how the excavations for the boat moorings were made. Thanks.
The bar is usually empty save for a small knot of regulars who don't really want to know you (maybe it is more me than them?)
I always seem to be given a room in a separate outbuilding. Having said that, it was lovely and warm for a cold (and by this time snowing) winters night. It was clean and well turned out. No complaints there.
Breakfast was the best part! The food was fine but the view across the grass to the water was just SOOOO peaceful and uplifting. Its rare that I leave a place quite so fresh and prepared for the day ahead.

Would I go there again? Definitely. Please send me in the summer when the waterfowl are around and the grass grows lush Its merely average in the winter, but from springtime onward, its a knockout! It beats 10 bells out of 'nearby' dismal hotels.

We stopped here whilst on a long walk and had beers and lunch. The food was really very good, reasonably priced and filling and we enjoyed the beers. It was possible to have food from the restaurant menu in the more casual bar area. The staff seemed friendly and helpful. The decor is old fashioned and in a bit of a time-warp but it is a rural Cambridgeshire place. We would plan a walk around lunch here again.

I and several family members stayed at the above from the 21st sept - 23rd sept. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was very good with a good selection. The rooms were fine. We had no 4, comfy bed and good facilities and super breakfast I have stayed in hotels costing twice as much and have had worse! Yes overall the hotel is a bit dated in places but...it's OLD, it has character, unlike some of these road side lodges. don't be put off by other reviews. If in doubt speak to the manager, I did! he was most helpful. You can only speak as you find...we will be going back. That says it all I think!

Room Tip: rooms varied in size 1-7 were fine. some bar noise was diffident, but that's to be expected as r...

Four of us visited on a suuny Sunday lunchtime and were quickly shown to our table (Might have been nice to be asked if we would like a drink in the bar first as we were early.) The table was spotless. White tablecloths and napkins. Our drinks order was taken and arrived in minutes. The staff were a delight. Lots of smiles and nothing too much trouble. The starters, salmon, tomato and mozerella sald and salmon filo tart were all of good quality and fresh.
Our mains followed at a suitable interval and were lovely. Roast beef for two, lamb and salmon for the other two. The vegetables were plentiful and cooked al dente. We were all too full for dessert. Coffee (and mints) and Earl Grey were served and much appreciated.

Average food. If you eat from the bar menu prepare to do all the work yourself as waitresses do nothing but bring food to the table and don't like being asked to do anything else. The new potatos came without any butter snd looked like dried up unappetising bullets. I asked the waitress for some butter on her way past. Her reply was an abrupt "when I've finished serving these people" When the butter turned up ten mins later they wee two tiny furls for a dish of potatos for 4. Not impressed over all. When it came to paying you were shunted from one place to the next. Not impressed overall it should be fantastic and it wasn't! Lazy waitresses and sloppy crackers set up!

Having moved into the area recently we decided to visit the Pike and Eel with friends today.

It is the height of summer with a full marina. There were few customers and from our entrance to our exit we were made to feel an inconvenience by every member of the staff that we encountered.
During our meal one of our guests asked for a glass of water and was told that they needed to go to the bar for it.
The food was dreadful, dry, dull and poorly cooked/presented.
One wineglass had lipstick neatly presented on the rim.

Not a place to return to or recommend. Hospitality training urgently required!!!!
