This chateau is beautiful and majestic as it perches on the hill. We arrived at night after a very long and hilly drive through the country to be amazed with the chateau walls lit greeting us grandly through trees as we weaved down the hill into town.
Especially if you've toured a bunch of castles.. don't take this tour. The castle has been completely restored and appears to be used for parties, concerts, and meetings (attend a concert for free admission to the chateau is best).
Take the chairlift to the top of the hill for a nice view of town, the river, and the chateau. The wooded path is fun and you can walk through this other end of town past the chateau.
Eat at the restaurant near the bridge (castle side of river, other side of road).. friendly staff, multilingual. (don't eat at the restaurant across the river with river side/level seating - annoying waiter from Portugal made our experience bad; he clearly wanted to close the restaurant early).
Stay at the hotel Hientz; friendly multilingual staff and AMAZING breakfast. Nice garden too for after dinner drinking or cigars... motorcycle garage parking, flat screens in room, hairdryers, elevator, central in town, free wifi, clean, updated, charming.
Use Vianden as base for Luxembourg tours.. very sporty area for fishing, hiking, canoeing, cycling etc.. wine tasting in the south, and the city of Luxembourg is only 45 minutes away. (we preferred the quiet of Vianden to the wall-street feel of Luxembourg)
Vianden is such a cute little town... but don't expect too much in the way of shopping or dining. Expect very German food. Most speak German and French, some English.
