“best viewed on drive into town.. and from chair lift”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

This chateau is beautiful and majestic as it perches on the hill. We arrived at night after a very long and hilly drive through the country to be amazed with the chateau walls lit greeting us grandly through trees as we weaved down the hill into town.

Especially if you've toured a bunch of castles.. don't take this tour. The castle has been completely restored and appears to be used for parties, concerts, and meetings (attend a concert for free admission to the chateau is best).

DO:
Take the chairlift to the top of the hill for a nice view of town, the river, and the chateau. The wooded path is fun and you can walk through this other end of town past the chateau.

Eat at the restaurant near the bridge (castle side of river, other side of road).. friendly staff, multilingual. (don't eat at the restaurant across the river with river side/level seating - annoying waiter from Portugal made our experience bad; he clearly wanted to close the restaurant early).

Stay at the hotel Hientz; friendly multilingual staff and AMAZING breakfast. Nice garden too for after dinner drinking or cigars... motorcycle garage parking, flat screens in room, hairdryers, elevator, central in town, free wifi, clean, updated, charming.

Use Vianden as base for Luxembourg tours.. very sporty area for fishing, hiking, canoeing, cycling etc.. wine tasting in the south, and the city of Luxembourg is only 45 minutes away. (we preferred the quiet of Vianden to the wall-street feel of Luxembourg)

Vianden is such a cute little town... but don't expect too much in the way of shopping or dining. Expect very German food. Most speak German and French, some English.

“Worth the visit”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2012

While this castle is worth the visit I wish they would have either done less "restoring/making very poor mockups of what it looked like" or just left the castle the way they found it.

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2012

Best seen from a distance when it looks quite impressive. Inside it's a new build and has little of historical interest.

“Castle”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2012

The castle has been substantially rebuilt and you can see all the different phases of the rebuild in one of the exhibit rooms in the castle. There are some rooms which show their uses in times gone by and done very well. There are the usual historical exhibits that you'd get in a place like this. The entrance price is reasonable. Worth going too but there isn't enough to see. we spent about an hour and saw most of what was on offer.
