“Hotel Streym - A relaxed atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012

I have visited the Faroe Islands three times now, and each time I have stayed at this Hotel, The experience has always been most enjoyable, and I can and do thoroughly recommend it. It is a small, quiet, (although the road is close, and it is a main road, into Torshavn) basic and relaxed family run facility. The rooms are clean and neat, and the bathrooms, are more than adequate. Breakfast is included in the price. There is a sitting room, with free internet for the use of guests. I was told by the Owner (Aage) that he will be spending the Winter months doing some renovating, and adding some additional rooms, increasing the occupancy, and availability by three rooms to 29 rooms.

You will not see any uniforms in this Hotel, and the owner told me he likes it that way. He mentioned that he feels, formal uniforms, indicate to guests, they should not come too close, and he simply refuses to allow that. I actually prefer the no-uniform policy
The staff here, Aage the owner, and Jens his Manager and son-in-law are most approachable . In fact all the staff are easy to talk with, and ready and willing to assist in all things.

There is no formal dining facility in this Hotel, so if that is a requirement, that may be a small minus for some. There are however eating houses nearby. Carellos is very close, and there is a Chinese one next door. I have eaten at Carellos several times, but the Chinese one, I know nothing about, this one.

Supermarkets are close also, within walking distance, and some speciality shops are also close, and well worth a visit, to see some of the knitted craft items on display. This is a must do thing, to visit these shops. The 'wool knits' are very beautiful, fairly expensive, but for pure wool, one can not expect anything else.

My stays here in this Hotel have all been for various time frames. The first for 10 days, the second for a week, and this time for just 2 nights. I had been staying in an apartment a little way out of town for a month while I was writing. I wanted peace and quiet, and the apartment was absolutely wonderful for that , and I absolutely do recommend and perhaps prefer this type of accomodation. It allows and permits a person to get a meal for themselves, to relax to not see anyone, if that is what is wanted. It provides and allows extra privacy. The Hotel can not provide that service, so for that alone the apartment was wonderful. It was so well equipped, everything at my fingertips

However for the last couple of days I wanted to be closer in the town, to continue some research, and be able to negotiate the return journey after it got dark, and so staying in the Hotel close to town allowed me to do that, without the need to use the free bus service or Taxi's to return in the rain, and the snow. So for that reason the Hotel was also wonderful, and I would stay here again if I were to return to the Faroes, for a shorter time. It all depends on the time frame for me, and shopping in a foreign language is an adventure, in itself.

Many of the double rooms overlook the Island of Nolsoy, and the fjord. During my stays I have had three different rooms, and had a great view from all of them. It is possible to see the boats arrive from the other islands. The fishing fleet is nearby, as are the more than ample eating houses for such a small community. The very beautiful old Cathedral is also close, and usually open. The walk into Torshavn is lovely. Just to wander around this place is peaceful and quiet, and a real pleasure.

There is still only one negative from my point of view, for the Hotel Streym. There is no lift/elevator. This is not so good in my humble opinion. For this reason I can not recommend this Hotel for people with mobility issues. The hotel is over three levels and to carry suitcases up a possible two flights of stairs may prove difficult for some. I would not like to carry a suitcase up the stairs. However fortunately the staff have on two occasions done that for me. I have carried them down, but that is quite different. To walk down is much easier with suitcases in hand, than to carry them up.

I can absolutely and I am thoroughly pleased to recommend this Hotel. You will not find any other Hotel better for the price, in this magnificant stunning country. Please enjoy

.

I travel a LOT. I rarely come across a hotel whose assistance and hospitality reach this level. Helpful and car hire that is a boon to a trip to the Faroe Islands, which in itself is a must. Bathrooms are a little small, but that is the European approach. Otherwise breakfast is good in an otherwise fairly expensive country.

What it lacks in location (though the center is just 10 min walking) it has in modernity and praticality, and reasonable price considering other options in Torshavn. Rooms are ok, clean and the bathroom has underfeet heat system (good!). Breakfast is ok, too.
Only problem was that staff at reception told us that we won't have any problem for renting a car through them for the next day.. when the next morning we asked for it, they called the agency and there was no car. So, book in advance if you need it.
Everyroom has its "own personality" (you'll see!), we read all the original descriptions!

The hotel itself was very basic, feeling more like a motel or high class hostel. Location is ok, a few minutes walk from the city center. View of the bay and Nólsoy from our room.

Breakfast was pretty simple too, but good enough to get a decent start on the day. If you're looking for a great start, take a walk to Kaffistova in the harbour and have their brunch platter.

But the service was outstanding. We took an impulse trip to the Faroes, and was really late with our hotel booking. Hotel Streym saved us the first two nights, and when we asked the owner, Aage, if he knew about any other options, he ended up booking the remaining three nights for us at other hotels in the islands. This is a service level far beyondy expectations. Well done!

I stayed at this hotel from 18-22 July 2012.

This hotel is very much a case of what you see is what you get. Prices in Torshavn are high and this is a relative bargain. It is rather like an upmarket hostel. It is on a surprisingly busy ring road and, while the front rooms do have ocean glimpses, the road is also pretty noisy through until about 11pm. The walls are also pretty thin and you will hear your neighbours.

Also note that you will need to carry your bags up 1 or 2 flights of stairs.

I was after a double room but unfortunately got twin single beds. the rooms are basically but adequately furnished. the bathroom is minimalist and has really appalling lighting and a very annoying exhaust fan that stays on well after you've left the room. There is excellent free wifi in the room and at breakfast. Breakfast was basic but fine.

The owners/staff are friendly and helpful. I booked this hotel direct by email and had very good service from the beginning. I also hired the car through the hotel and it was waiting for me at the airport. As a note on life in the Faroes, the car was left unlocked with the keys under the mat. Similarly, when I arrived at the hotel there was no one at reception but the key to my room was left out with my name on it.

The location of the hotel is neutral - not central but not too far out to be a bother.

Tips
For self caterers, there are two small supermarkets within 5-10min walk. Just stay on the hotel road walking towards Torshavn. The first is on the left and easily visible, the second and better option is further along on the right and not really noticeable until you are right on top of it. If you keep walking for another 15 minutes you will come to the SMS shopping centre that has a large supermarket.

If you want wifi when you are in Torshavn itself, the Hotel Hafnia has really strong free wifi which is accessible not just from outside but even from across the road.

If you like Japanese food, try Entiko restaurant in Torshavn.

Great music scene in the Faroes, so check out some of the local artists.

If driving, there are a few things to note. While the country roads are well marked, the towns are very poorly sign-posted. The road surfaces throughout are excellent but driving can be difficult due to changing weather, stray sheep and single lane roads (and in some cases tunnels - also unlit). Even the best tunnels are very poorly lit. The local drivers ignore the speed limits and do tailgate if they think you are traveling too slowly (didn't see a single policeman in 5 days). While there are some traffic lights, mostly there are roundabouts and the locals do not signal at all when entering or leaving.

Torshavn and the Faroes are well worth a visit, so if you are thinking about it, do it, before it gets too touristy. Do note that the weather is tricky and I did get stuck two extra days when the flights were grounded due to fog. This is apparently not uncommon, so don't go with a really tight travel schedule as you may have problems.

I would recommend the Streym for the budget conscious traveller who would rather spend their money on doing things than the place they lay their head each night. There are many plusses here. The room was simple but with everything I needed. At first, I was worried as I faced out onto what seemed like a busy road but traffic dies off in the evening & I was never woken up during the night. It has a small but perfectly formed bathroom & big flat screen on the wall should you wish to take a break & watch TV. Staff is friendly & really helpful with directions, bus scheduales, etc. They give you a little pocket map of Torshavn when you check in that was very useful. Breakfast is simple but with plenty of variety & quantity. Tea & coffee were available all day in the dining room, where they provide free internet. Location is really important to me & the Streym is within walking distance of everything you'll need. The big bus/ferry terminal (airport bus #300, 90 kr) is right down the hill & there is a grocery store (Mylan) about 5 blocks away. It's easy walking to the harbour & main shopping/dining district. The sayings outside each room will make you smile as you walk by. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: The rooms facing front give you a view of the water. Don't worry about the road as traffic seems...

Stayed here for 2 nights - the 1st and last nights of our 5 nights in The Faroe Islands. It was located very close to the bus station and an easy walk into the centre of the city.
Our room was adequate and clean, with a comfortable bed. All the staff were genuinely very friendly and helpful. Internet access and tea/coffee were included, with a good breakfast selection provided.
Compared to other more expensive places to stay I was happy with every aspect of this hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have some views over the ocean, while those at the back only have a view of a wal...
