“Amazing hotel”

Our first impression of the hotel was one of opulence. We had been met at the airport by one of the hotel cars, and were given a very welcome drink on arrival. Our room was beautiful, everything you could possibly need had been thought of. Plenty of cupboard space too. Tea and coffee making facilities which is always good. The view from our balcony across the harbour was beautiful. All the staff are attentive and very approachable. Breakfast is in a very large light and airy dining area, a vast choice for everyone, eggs cooked to order for omeletts etc, and pancakes.
If you like your tea you may find theirs a little weaker and milk seems to be half cream, lovely in coffee.

The outside space is vast, lovely pool, which we all enjoyed very much, the sandwiches from the pool bar I can recommend they were lovely, more like a panini. You can walk into Valletta from the hotel quite a few steps up to the entrance of the hotel, we walked most evenings. We did use the hotel cars to book a trip to Mdina which is well with doing it cost us €20 for 4 of us each way.

We would definitely live to go back 5 days not enough!

Room Tip: Try to get a sea view if possible we were in room 907 and it was gorgeous

I'm late writing this review we stayed here in August. We would definitely stay here again and we had a really enjoyable stay. This hotel suited our needs as we did not wish to be stuck in a resort but right in the heart of Valletta. However, whilst on most fronts this is an excellent hotel I agree with others that some aspects place it just below 5*.
This hotel is wonderfully situated in central Valletta. I think it beats its nearest rival because one can escape to an uninterrupted view of the harbour instead of overlooking the bus terminal. We found it peaceful yet one had a choice of activities if you wished to do more than crash by the pool. Valletta is the centre of the transport hub whether it be water taxi, bus or simply exploring on foot and the hotel taxi service was very convenient.
We stayed one week in the presidential suite which was huge and very well appointed. It was spotlessly clean and well done to the staff who maintained it to such an excellent standard.The suite has its own wi fi and office area so you could complete work when necessary.Very comfortable beds and furnishings.
The executive lounge is a real bonus for breakfast, especially during the height of the season where it is an oasis of calm. The staff were again excellent.They took time to converse with you and really made you feel like a guest as opposed to an anonymous tourist. Definitely a plus to returning. We never ate in the main dining room as everything we could possibly need for breakfast was provided. The canapés and pre dinner drinks were also appreciated and they were served in the bar area.
The links the hotel has with local firms is excellent. They recommended a first class dive school and arranged for us to be collected by boat to be taken to the harbour where our hire boat was moored. We sometimes paid less than advertised tourist firms. I contacted the hotel ahead of arrival to recommend a restaurant for a birthday dinner in town; again perfect choice.
Well done to the pool staff who kept the area spotless in mid August when it was horrendously busy. They would always try to find you a sunbed and were unfailingly patient with some guests who were rude and complaining towards them.
The inside pool is open late.
98% of the staff are excellent
We dined in our suite twice and found room service good
The hotel is excellent value
NB In response to reviewers who said they were made to feel like criminals re security for charges and signing for drinks/meals, any mistakes re people obtaining services for free is deducted from staff wages so one can't blame them for being careful. Unfortunately not everyone is honest.
The presidential suite balcony needs shade. Better screening is also needed between it and the adjacent royal suite
The comments on this site regarding the truly awful tea and coffee are absolutely spot on. For 5* one would expect at least quality if not a range; imagine serving Lipton's tea bags at the Dorchester! It is this lack of finesse that takes it below 5*. The way trays are presented in the room,(somewhat utilitarian) lack of fresh milk when you have a fridge, sachets of Nescafé instant coffee, no teapots, flowers etc. the little things expected in an executive suite. Lack of co ordination of what is in the rooms. In fairness the staff did act immediately when I raised the issue and were unfailingly pleasant.
Reception service variable. This was the only area where we found some staff to be incompetent/rude. Some absolutely wonderful, others completely failing in knowledge.
The concierge service also was dependent upon who was on duty, again like reception the service was excellent or downright awful nothing in between. Instances even of complete incomprehension of services advertised on the hotel website.
The décor is stuck in a 1980's time warp. I thought the hotel older than it actually is but unbelievably some one designed it this way!
This would apply to many hotels not just The Excelsior.It would be nice to have one time of the day in one pool area, the inside pool in the evening for instance where there is an adult only swim time. I am not anti children, I have my own and I realise that in the summer places will be crowded but for one hour, just one it would be nice to swim without being barged, jumped upon and wading through a mass of inflatables.
We only dined in the hotel once in the poolside restaurant, it wasn't successful but I don't wish to be negative as other people have had more success and we could have hit a bad night. It was fine for a pool lunch.

Room Tip: Try and get a harbour view , views are spectacular.

Over looking the harbour was a relaxing way to wake up in the morning and even while you are leisurely having breakfast you can gaze over the tranquil water. Breakfast was a feast and the service was great. Had a problem with our room not being ready and I cannot figure out why they just didn't allocate us another room instead of keeping us waiting for over an hour.

Have stayed here twice and on both occasions it was very enjoyable. The staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Eating in is expensive but the food was of a high standard. My room was spacious and the view across the grand harbour, amazing. I used the chauffeur service several times. It was slightly more expensive than local taxis but worth the extra. Will certainly stay there again

First of all, I want to point out: this is a gorgeous five-star hotel. There are however some aspects which one does not expect to find in such a high class place. Summing things up:

-A magnificent breakfast, with all the hot, cold, sweet and salty things you might expect, and people preparing for you pancakes, waffle, omelettes and any type of eggs on-the-fly.
-Large beds, large and clean rooms (I'm talking about the Executive inland room which we had) up to the standard of a 5-star hotel
-Reception personnel kind, quick and responsive for any issue
-Great view over the sea from all the restaurants, great swimming pools and other facilities like the spa and the gym. Great hall and plenty of sofas for relaxing/listening piano bar.

-The room service is way too slow! When checking in the first day, we had to wait close to 2 hours for having our room ready. The situation didn't change in the next days, we had our room done almost always in the afternoon.
-I don't personally like so many personnel entering and exiting your room during the day. We counted three visits per day: besides the room janitor, another person comes for amenities refilling (bottles, chocolate, coffee etc.), AND another person comes in the evening for preparing the room for the night, often moving belongings, etc. Also, take into account the possibility of calls in your room asking whether you're happy with everything and so on. Perhaps there is some overcare of the customer here that people might not like.
-Elevators: there are three, but they are not enough when the hotel is busy: expect long wait times. The elevators' displays are partially hidden by an artificial ceiling, are dark and not that readable and they do not tell whether the elevator is going up or down (disappointing if you're heading to 8th floor and end up at the swimming pool at 1st floor).
-Conference facilities: very good conference rooms, but locations equipped with desks and plugs for your laptop are preferable, and it is not the case of the facilities in this hotel.

Booked a week away and stayed with my husband in the The Grand Excelsior. Was very impressed by the look of the outside of the building and the inside didn't really disappoint. The staff were friendly and helpful, even though we were constantly disturbed by room service and housekeeping on our first day. The do not disturb sign became very useful.
The room was clean but did have a strange smell, our room overlooked the pool and courtyard and luckily we still managed to get internet access, bonus!
The food at breakfast was brilliant and the choice was great, fruit salad, omelettes, pancakes, waffles and cold meats all available.
We never ate any other meals at the hotel so I can't comment on the other restaurants.
The pools were clean and not overly busy even though the hotel was packed. The gym was small but usable.
The hotel sits in a basin so you have a lot of steps to walk up to reach the main road but you do get used to them lol
My only real gripe was the shower curtain that stuck to you every time you showered!
Will definitely be returning for another holiday.

All a bit "so so". Rooms are comfy but tired. The pool area is really pretty and right by the sea. Lovely. And there's a tiny beach so you can swim in the sea too. Service at the outdoor bar is very good. But, It's really a conference centre and not for holiday relaxing. It's overun with conference delegates who aren't always quiet.
Staff are mostly very friendly but when I asked to move to a
No smoking floor - the balconies in the exec rooms are VERY close together, and the smoke is chokingly intrusive, I was treated with disdain and told to avoid using my balcony.
Breakfast buffet is huge, but quality isn't always great.
WiFi is hit and miss. No access in bedrooms.
Public areas are cluttered with luggage. All in all It disappoints.
