“Luxury in Malta”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2013

Have stayed in the Excelsior a number of times. Try and get a club room as they are more spacious and you get access to the lounges mid afternoon.
Pool is a decent size with a small kids pool.
Restaurants are expensive but plenty of restaurants in Valetta.
Steep hill to walk up from hotel to Valetta.

We stayed there for 4 days for our family trip to Malta. We havea 3 1/4 years old baby boy. The room was spacious enough for him to go around and play. The bathroom also was spacious so we could enjoy our bubble bath and all...
Breakfast was good with quite a lot of selections. Gym is quite nice. Swimming pool (indoor) was nice as well. Staffs were friendly.
The Ferry stop to Sliema is near the hotel...it actually is walkable. The hill some people complained about was not that bad for us as we had a pushchair for the kiddo. We walked to the bus stop with no problems as well.

Just one frightening incident we had on the last night of our stay was a bit disturbing. A stranger almost walked into our room around almost 2am at nigh while we were all alseept! We had the door blocker. So the door did not open all the way. Obviously the hotel front desk made a mistake of giving out our room to the guy!!! It was a rediculous mistake for a 5 star hotel!!!! We felt bad for the stranger guest who came to our room at that time as well...poor guy was dragging his suitcase and I bet all he wanted was a comfortable bed to crash after his travel. We called the front notified them about their mistake. They said sorry.....but could have been a bit more apalogetic about their mistake. Of course I could not fall back into sleep after the surprise visit in the middle of the night.....but I do not want to penalize them for the mistake..so I am giving them a good rating as the hotel itself is nice indeed.

Room Tip: Get a room above the 4th floor as the hotel loby is on the 4th floor. If your room is below the loby...

Excellent staff, all very friendly and helpful. One of the best breakfast buffets we have seen anywhere. We were invited to meet with the managers on Wednesday evening which was a nice touch, made us feel welcome and valued. We were also pleasantly surprised that we were both given a bottle of very good local wine for our birthdays, another personal touch. For a large hotel these things make you feel special and important. Any small problems were dealt with immediately, i made a mistake and couldn't open the safe and security came within 5 minutes and we had a plumbing problem, the loo was blocked, again sorted straight away with minimum fuss. The indoor swimming pool and fitness facilities were great, a robe and slippers was provided in the room for use going to and from your room to the pool. Would recommend and would stay again. Did not try the restaurant as there were so many other places to try in the town that were smaller and cheaper.

I stayed for one night on a quick trip to visit Valetta, and having paid 55 euros for a room and breakfast, the Excelsior was terrific value. The rooms are quite dated, including having some pretty serious stains and rips in the soft furnishings, but given the price I had little to complain about. It is a very short walk to Valetta (up a few stairs, but a pretty easy walk), and the hotel has great views. I had breakfast and dinner in the one restaurant that was open (it was off season) and the food was fine if a little overpriced. I also had a fabulous pedicure in the spa.

While a bit outdated in terms of decor, this is a comfortable hotel with all the amenities expected of a five star.I was pleasantly surprised that I was upgraded to a sea view and given breakfast which was not part of the package booked, but very much appreciated. Food and beverages were good and reasonably priced, with the exception of the additional surcharge of 5 euros for room service which was a bit steep if you are only ordering a bowl of soup.

It was too cold at this time of year to use the outdoor pool, but the indoor pool was pleasant except for the ledges and pillars that you keep encountering while trying to swim. The jacuzzi could have been a few degrees warmer. The gym is small and has decent equipment but gets
a little warm if there are more than 3 people. Regrettably the spa closes at 6 pm which is too early for those coming back from a working day or touring all the sights of the country.

The hotel is in a good location, a few minutes from and central Valetta and the main bus terminal which brings you around the island, but be prepared for the steps - for me a good way to help justify some of the breakfast.
Pleasant and helpful staff throughout

Stayed here for a week in February on half board terms. In general the hotel was of high quality with good evening meals and breakfasts. The rooms were well appointed and ours faced the sea and pool and was quiet at this time of year. There are a few thing to be aware of, mainly that to reach the bus station and the main gate into Valletta is only a few minutes walk but it starts with about 80 steps out of the hotel and then a few hundred yards of steep walking. Really a hotel of this standard should run a free bus to run guests up the bus station, after a few days we may have become fitter but the novelty of a work out on the way to our day of roaming got a bit much. In hot weather this would be even worse. My only real disappointment with the indoor pool temperature, both it and the "hot" tub were so cold that even my wife who goes swimming in Austrian lakes in the summer found both much too cold. We did see some hardy souls in the pool but it was not at a comfortable temperature. Maybe you could get away with this in summer when temperatures are in the 30s but on chilly 15 degrees winter days its good to have a warm. Which brings me to their steam room and sauna, most hotels we visit these are included in the price but here the management want to charge significant amounts extra (30 euro for 2 for one visit). So overall this is a well positioned hotel to explore the beautiful and historic city of Valletta which which is only let down by its desire to save a few quid on the heating bill in its spa area.

Room Tip: Ask for a pool view, with that you'll also get a sea view. Rooms on this side of he hotel face a...
