Grand Masters Palace with halls full of suits of armour and grand reception rooms, Ornate tapestries and paintings and furniture. Interesting Armoury with displays of various weapons from Crossbows to cannons.

“Dissapointed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2013

I have been looking forward to seeing the GMP armoury and state rooms for years.
What I found was armours in the state rooms in a poor and uncared for condition....the biggest shock was finding one pauldron defaced by having Elvis scratched into it.
As a professional armourer and a lover of all armour this was upsetting and quite unacceptable. These peices are a national treasure but will be gone in a couple of decades if something isnt done about them.
The armoury itself was a little better but again was crfying out for a good clean and revamp.
So sad.

Thank you for visiting the Grandmaster’s Palace and for providing us with your feedback.

The half-armours in the three main corridors of the Palace State Rooms form part of the Palace Armoury collection and were placed there in the mid-19th century. During the Order’s rule of the island, these armours were never displayed as such, but were always in storage or displayed inside the Armoury Hall (presently occupied by the Malta House of Representatives). Thus, the heavier influx of visitors to the Palace in recent years, particularly in the hot summer months, has increased deterioration problems of these armours and staff on site are often unable to control people from touching the armours. This causes their surface to get rusty in no time, no matter their continuous maintenance. We can assure everyone that these armours are being cared for and that they will not be 'lost in a couple of decades'. Conservation is a lengthy process that is done scientifically and meticulously and this process takes time, however it is being done professionally by qualified Heritage Malta employees.

With regards to the damaged pauldron (shoulder armour piece), this piece of armour was one of those conserved this year and was regrettably scratched afterwards by some vandal. In the conservation of armour, one cannot remove a millimetre or so of metal surface from a 400 year old armour piece so as to remove a deeply incised mark. This would be a vandal act in itself.

With regards to the Palace Armoury exhibition at ground floor level, the state of the arms and armour and the general cleanliness of the exhibition areas, lobby and restrooms are kept in an immaculate state and cleaning takes place on a regular basis.

“Good audioguide”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2013 via mobile

What could have been dry and boring after a while, turned in to a very interesting visit. We toured the Palace and the armoury. Who knew that there were so many different types of armour and helmets?

The audio commentary was very good. Each piece of information was concise but interesting. Short enough to hold your attention without boring you and allowing your mind to wander.

Definitely to be recommended.

“Very good audio information about the pieces of armor and items in the armory”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2013

The palace was closed for visitors on the day we went into Valletta, however you were allowed into the armory for a reduced price.

A handheld audio tour is provided however you should ask for it as it wasn't automatically given to us as we presented our tickets.

The audio information is in depth and almost every piece of armor or weaponry cabinet has a number to use on the audio device.

To listen and properly view all the items in the 2 halls it takes 1-2 hours.

Positives
+fair price
+good audio tour
+well laid out
+different types of weapons and armor eg: halberds, 2 handed swords, pistols, rifles, cannons, chain mail, decorated armour and various types of helmet styles.

Negatives
-shame the palace was not open
