“Fabulous stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

Have just returned from a week long stay. Had a fabulous time and loved the hotel. From the outset the service was amazing. Reception, concierge, bar staff, maids were all really lovely. The invite to the drinks reception was a nice touch. Met by the HR manager and he was lovely and really interesting to chat to. We had a harbour view room and it suited our purposes excellently. Unlike a previous reviewer we didn't find the hotel or bus terminal noisy at all and spent plenty of time on the balcony. The standards of food and drink are really high and we enjoyed everything we bought. For me the stand out thing in this hotel, other than location and service, is that nothing is a problem. You just have to ask. Will definitely be returning again for another week. Oh and the beds and bedding are AMAZING.

Room Tip: Go for a harbour view room if you can

Very impressive entrance and reception areas.
Staff friendly and helpful.
Our room needed to have the double glazed doors to the balcony closed otherwise the noise from the bus terminus was intolerable. In consequence couldn't use the balcony and had to have the air con running to avoid it becoming an oven.
Bathroom in our room needed updating.
No water supplied in the room, tap water not suitable/safe for drinking.
Good poolside area and bar.
Position superb, apart from having the island's bus terminus to traverse in order to go into the city.
Breakfast very good, can't understand why, when most people want to eat on the terrace there are only a handful of tables available and half the terrace is empty.
The Pegasus restaurant is excellent; interesting menu, quality food, a reasonable wine list and very attentive service.

Room Tip: Rooms on the cityside suffer from intrusive noise from the bus station.

Great place to stay, I agree that some rooms were a little dated, but acceptable. No drinking water in rooms, and only 1 bottle of water offered free the whole week!
Staff very friendly and helpful, both in the resturant and at pool side. Pool resturant food OK not 5 Star.
Pegasus resturant dull, not in keeping with its excellent food, but John Paul the maitre'd made up for the decor along with his staff, great last night treat.
Will be back, wont leave it 38 years this time.

Room Tip: Top floor over looking water.

There's no denying that the Phoenicia is a great hotel in an excellent location. The staff are helpful (especially poolside & in the brasserie) and the decor immaculate.
However, in order to call itself a 5 star hotel, a couple of things will need to be improved:
- the tap water is not drinkable and yet we were not given any bottled water in the room after day 1. Not ideal in a hot country
- the bar staff in the club bar don't know how to make some of the drinks on the menu
- breakfast service is good but when busy, the seating plans tend to fall apart. We were seated at a dirty table by the hostess who then failed to ask any staff to clear our table. We had to find staff twice to ask them to relay our table.
- the mini golf course in the gardens is a great idea but is so neglected that it's actually unplayable

These are very small niggles and I would happily stay there again but they are all easily fixed and would truly reflect the 5 star quality that the hotel aspires to.

Dear VBur 1234,

I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your review and valuable feedback following your stay at Phoenicia.

I have passed on your comments relating to the bars and restaurants to our Food and Beverage manager so that immediate action is taken to improve service in these areas. I have also asked maintenance to have a look at the mini golf area to bring it up to scratch.

I am glad that you would happily stay at the Hotel Phoenicia again and I look forward to welcoming you back.

Best Regards

Helena

We spent 2 great weeks at this hotel, we had a harbour view room, which probably did make the difference. The staff were always courteous and professional. The building is fantastic, the pool area lovely. If you can get the B&B option, it's definitely worth doing as there is an extensive range available - we tended to skip lunch as breakfast was more than enough! The Brasserie is definitely worth a visit too, with great food and excellent service. Best of all is the location, literally a minute walk from the main street in Valletta.

Room Tip: If you can get a harbour view room on 4th floor, it is quiet with great views.

Very nice building, old classical. Nice pool. Nice interior. We found the food to be mediocre. The rooms were nice, but the bathroom shower curtain and shower mat were full of mold. We were told the water was not potable. High-class hotel, but one can't drink the water?

Dear Flamenquero,

Thank you for sharing your experience at the Hotel Phoenicia on Trip Advisor. I am very disappointed to learn that we were unable to fully meet your expectations.

We provide a complimentary bottle of water in all rooms on arrival. The tap water is also good for use with our complimentary tea and coffee making facilities in the room. Mineral water is also available from our mini bars and may also be ordered through room service.

With reference to your comments about room cleanliness; I have forwarded your comments to the Housekeeper and I assure you that action has already been taken to avoid similar incidents in the future.

I hope we shall have the pleasure to welcome you back to the Phoenicia in the near future.

Best Regards

Helena

The hotel is in a very good position, just outside the gates of Valletta and right on the bus terminal. The hop on hop off buses go from outside the hotel. The entrance is very impressive and the staff very helpful and polite. Our room did not have a very good aspect, but this is not surprising as there is a lot of building work going on. Beware of booking a pool view room as we were offered, the pool is quite a long walk away in the ground of the hotel and no rooms will have a view of it. The room was well appointed and clean and the service good. It is very 1940's inspired and could do with some updating to make it feel a little more current. Wifi in the rooms would be good. We only had bed and breakfast and the breakfast was very good, even free sparkling wine if you wanted it!!!!!! I would say that it is more of a 4 star hotel than a 5.

Dear Karen P,

Thank you for writing such a wonderful review, I am so grateful that you took the time to share your experience with others.

I am surprised to read that you were under the impression of booking a Pool View Room, as you well said the pool cannot be viewed from any of the rooms as it is at the far end of the garden and at a lower level. The rooms situated at the back of the hotels are our Harbour View Rooms with views of the hotel garden and Marsamxett Harbour.

Thank you for choosing the Hotel Phoenicia, we hope to welcome you back very soon.

Best Regards

Helena
