Maybe this place does not deserve to be graded "average", but several issues contributed to this overall rating. I will start with the good.
The apartment is located right in the heart of Valletta on a third floor of an apartment building in Melita Street no. 9. It is very close by the Wembley Store where you can get all the groceries you need. The view from the apartment is stunning and is especially calming early in the morning or twilight. A small, concrete pavement beach is located about 200 meters from the apartment, just down the stairs, so you can always have a quick dip in the sea. Also, the Sliema Ferries is just below the apartment. The apartment is quite big, with a big bathroom and a separate dining and sleeping area. There are Maltese floor tiles and the entire ambiance inside is very historic, topped with a beautiful Maltese balcony.
However, several things to keep in mind. If you go in the summer, be prepared to pay 10 extra euros for the AC, although the website does not mention this extra charge. One night the batteries of the AC remote went dead, so we had to sleep with two fans. It was impossible to sleep and we kept waking up all night. Fortunately, we went and bought new batteries in the morning and Kurt (the host) gave us back the 10 euros for that day. When we came, the batteries were almost dead, which Kurt noticed and said he had no clue where to buy them. He said he would buy them and never did. The boiler which is located on top of the building does not work properly and when taking a shower with the AC and lights on the electricity runs out. This happened 4 times and we had to call Kurt who called a guy to fix this. On day 3 the boiler died and there was a flood just outside the apartment entrance doors, which this guy fixed again.
I also had to clean the entire apartment, as it was flighty when we came. The floors were stained and so dusty, the sheets were not ironed and the windows on the balcony were covered with dust (I posted a photo of cleaned vs. dirty window), so in order to enjoy the view we decided to clean the glass. It took us about half an hour to clean 6 windows - I've never seen anything dirtier in my life.
The kitchen is equipped, but all the dishes are so dirty, so some of them we could not even use. Again, we had to clean everything by ourselves.
So, be prepared for some surprises, but I would probably choose this place again as it is really charming and has great value. I just hope Kurt and the owners will pay a bit more attention to this place in the future, as it is slowly falling apart.
