The Host Guesthouse is a new (opened in feb/april 2013) bed and breakfast on top of the hill in Sliema on the edge of St Julian. The sign outside says something along the lines of 'Will's friends expat community', which is something he does too so don't get confused, that is the right place!
Its a newly refurbished and very tastefully decorated beautiful house. There's 3 guest rooms, Will (the owner) is currently extending the basement for 4 more rooms and remodeling the terrace on the first floor to accommodate a small swimming pool. The communal areas are very spacious and in general the whole property is lovely, very clean and good quality.
We had a large size room (apparently the other rooms are even more spacious), with quiet airco and a comfortable double (queen size) bed. We stayed in the Chinese room, which is on the first floor room with a window into the small courtyard. It has a small desk and chair, plenty of cupboard space, good quality towels, a good hairdryer and shower gel and shampoo (Johnsons Baby) provided. There was a large plate for fruit waiting for us which was really nice.
The door to our room was milky glass which you couldn't see through at all, but does feel a bit weird. Additionally the door to the cleaning cupboard was directly next to it, so from early in the morning you would hear the staff come and go (they were being very quiet but a glass door does not provide much sound proofing).
They provide a very tasty, very generous breakfast at the breakfast bar in the modern, lovely kitchen. Will cooks personally, making your eggs the way you want them (go for his magical version with salami and cheese, its great!). Coffee is good & strong (from the italian macchinetta), you also get several slices of pitta bread, butter, nutella, jam and cream cheese and a yoghurt. Additionally you get a whole plate of fruit, fruit juice and a wrapped Bauli brioche. And a large bottle of water a day.
Will is a very friendly and helpful owner who clearly wants to make your stay a good one. I had a parking accident the night we arrived and he stayed out on the pavement for over an hour waiting for the traffic wardens to come.
He's very active in the expat community, hosting many events at the house (such as cooking class) and providing practical information for newcomers. Guests are welcome to join in with his events, which would be a nice way to meet some people living in Malta.
He has an impressive amount of energy, does like to talk and is happy to share all about his activities. Personally I am not that chatty at breakfast, so as he talks while cooking, it was a little much, but it is one of the aspects why you choose to stay at a bed & breakfast instead of at an impersonal hotel.
Just a few minor points to mention. Bathroom was a bit small and had some interesting design aspects that made it slightly unpractical - the tap over the sink was in the far corner of the sink and low over the basin so bit awkward to use. The window had a strange locking mechanism making it hard to open just a little and avoid the neighbours diagonally opposite looking in. Also the shower leaked water out under the shower door.
And just be aware that there's no parking for the guest house! As its an extremely busy area, its hard to find parking. You'll need to drive up and down through the (hilly) streets until you find something. This is probably the case for most hotels in the Sliema/St Julian area, so if you have a car and want to ensure you have parking make sure that the place you choose has their own parking.
But all in all, definitely a place to recommend if you like a warm personal bed and breakfast experience in a quality, tastefully decorated guesthouse!
And if you're hungry - there's a good restaurant (for lunch and dinner) a 5mins walk away on the bay (St Julians area), called U Bistrot. Its part of the Meridian Hotel though thats not apparent when you're there, as its just accessible from the street. Its on a very busy road so if you want less noise sit inside. I can highly recommend the burgers!
