“Good Facilities, Good Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2013

After reading previous reviews before booking with Chevron Travel we asked for a sea view high room but were told that they wereall booked so we settled for a high floor room. On arrival we were pleasantly suprised to find that we were on a high floor (7th Floor) but we also had a sea view room. The room was clean and spacious with all the facilities that you could need (NO Kettle if you like to have a cuppa). Breakfast was buffet affair with a good choice of cereal, fruit, yoghurt, cold meats and salads plus a selection of cooked 'english style' breakfast foods. All the food was fine but if you were there more than a week it may be repettive BUT ask yourself - what do you eat at home every day for breakfast before complaining - it was fine.

The roof top pool on floor 8 was clean with plenty of beds and shades although the shades are a bit worn but functional. The bar staff were plesant and you can get food from the Basilico restaurant or Star Cafe served at your bed. They also have a good selection of drinks and the views over Valetta are stunning.

We ate in the hotel a couple of times and only had one complaint which was dealt with immiediatly by the staff who were pleasant and removed the food from the bill (They were very busy and I think we were overlooked - we waited a long time and the food was cold) We could not ask for more.

Only minor downside, the internet is not free and is expensive.

We would definatley return and use this hotel again and would have no problem in recommending it to anyone.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor room 711 - 714 / 611 to 614 as I can imagine that the traffic noise could be lo...

I stay in this hotel twice a year through business, and it is of a very high quality, with excellent staff, but it I nearly lost a whole star for ridiculous pricing on internet charges, more of that later.

The rooms are really nice, and all carpeted which I still find strange as most Holiday Hotels it's tiles especially in hot climates, but I must say i do prefer the carpet, rooms have a fridge which is stocked with drinks and some nibbles (chargeable) and a TV with some English channels Sky news, bbc news, Discovery Channel, enough to be getting by with. the bathroom is fine maybe could be doing with a little freshen up, but passable. I did have a problem with the air-con but that's because i'm an idiot, if you leave your patio doors open air-con turns off, close doors air-con works, simples!!!

The pool is on the roof of the hotel, not the biggest pool in the world but fine if your just looking to cool off, and the views really are fantastic, there is a pool bar which does snacks as well, and plenty of loungers.

The food is all buffet service and can become a bit repetitive but on the whole not to bad, as in the whole hotel the staff are excellent and are always willing to help and nothing is to much trouble. There is not much by way of entertainment but you can stroll into silema for all the bars etc there is also a lot of shops that you will recognise from the UK.

Now internet charges, I realise if your on holiday this may not be a priority, but on business it is, and especially as the hotel classes itself as a good business hotel the charges are shockingly high, most hotels this is now free, or a very small charge. The waterfront charges 25 Euro for 4 days and it's not even fast enough to watch video, it really is a disgrace, I note the manager has responded previously on this saying he was looking into it, well he was doing this last year and nothing has changed.

Internet aside a very good hotel in a great location. Highly Recommended.

The good things about Waterfront Hotel are ;

Superb view, clean, friendly experienced staff, good location, near to bus stops and hop and hop off tour stops.

The bad things abour Waterfront Hotel are :

Wi - fi is not working properly and if it does,
it is a paid service and you can only use it in your room.
Every room has a modem and you cannot use your paid internet service
out of the room.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms worth paying....

Like other reviewers I have stayed at the Waterfront on many occasions, and like them, have found standards slipping and the hotel requiring a much needed upgrade. It's noticeable that it has won no awards since 2009.

Yes the staff are friendly and helpful for the most part and the quality of dining reasonable, but:-

- you have to pay for Wi-Fi, a thing of the past in most hotels and outlets
- the bathroom shower and curtains are the same ones that were in use ten years ago
- the TV is the old tube type, very poor quality and outdated
- the bed linen is the same as in use ten years ago
- the air conditioning is very poor and inadequate for the conditions in the high season
- dining in groups of more than five is a nightmare, as they will not reserve tables

I will probably not go to this hotel again, despite it's good location - it just does not compensate for the negative points.

At best this is a three star hotel and this should be reflected in the price.

Dear Guest,

Thanks for your review and feedback on our hotel and I am sorry that we failed to meet let alone exceed your expectations.

With regards to the WiFi charges, we are looking into this matter and we are hoping for a positive outcome in the coming weeks.

Regarding the room furnishing, we have kept the same colours and styles for a period of time but they are changed frequently as due to wear and tear no material will last for more than a couple of years. A complete room refurbishing overhaul is scheduled for the beginning of 2014 and we invite you to come over.

Please email me personally on ccamilleri@water.mizzi.com.mt as I would like to discuss the possibility of your to return to our hotel so that we can earn your trust in our product and service and to show you that the Excellence Award that we received last year from Trip Advisor was well deserved.

Kind regards

Traffic noise has been commented on by other users but we didn't pick up on it until it was too late. We booked 1 week and paid extra for a front sea view and were given room 211 on the 2nd floor. The view was magnificent but despite that, we quickly regretted having a room directly alongside the dual carriageway which runs around Sliema and is the main route to the other major resorts along the north coast. The road is used by buses, heavy commercial vehicles, cars, motorcycles, boy racers, vehicles with sirens, everyone uses their horn, you name it, it uses this road and the noise is horrendous and constant, day and night. The balcony doors are not double glazed and therefore have little noise reducing qualities. After the first night unable to sleep we asked to be moved but the hotel was full and it wasn't possible. We bought earplugs which helped a little with sleeping but we were still frequently disturbed by some of the noisier traffic. Sitting on the balcony to admire the view was an unpleasant noisy experience and if the balcony door was left open you couldn't hear the television. Unless you are deaf, insensitive to noise and a heavy sleeper, don't book a front sea view room. As wonderful as the view is, it's not worth the loss of sleep and consequent tiredness. Had it not been for having a front sea view room and suffering the noise, I'm sure I would have given it a higher rating.

There were also some peculiarities about this hotel which I mention below, but first, to be fair to the hotel, it was well appointed and clean. Rooms had daily maid service, towels were changed whenever required, the reception staff polite and helpful, and the dining room food good even though a little repetitive. The roof top terrace had sun loungers, a bar and small pool adequate to cool off in. It being high up the traffic noise was not so bad and, of course, the view was even better than the one from our room. Perhaps the moral of the tale is not to have a front sea view room to avoid the traffic noise and admire the view from the roof. The hotel is well located in respect of shops, restaurants, bars, buses, ferries and it's proximity to Valletta.

But, for a 4 Star hotel there were a couple of unnecessary down-sides. There was no tea / coffee making facilities in the room and still no free Wi-Fi, which was expensive to use. Nowadays it's difficult to find 4 Star hotels that don't provide these facilities free but this is one. It's hardly rocket science to do it and makes such a difference to the impression given of client care.

Now those peculiarities which have been touched upon by other reviewers. There are 3 lifts, 1 at one side of the hotel and 2 together at the other side. The single lift can't give access to the Mezzanine floor where the Basilico Restaurant is, nor does it give access to the 1st floor where the dining room is. I suppose there is a good reason but it was a nuisance as it was the nearest lift to our room. There are no obvious staircases but they are to be found near the lifts behind closed doors marked 'Fire Exit'. However, don't think you can sneak down or up to another floor because once the door shuts behind you they can't be opened from the stairwell side. Presumably, unless you find a door jammed open, you're committed to exiting the entire building. Having to be dependent on lifts, you can often have quite a wait for an empty one, especially at meal times. Annoying when you need to go down only 1 floor.

Lastly, I can confirm what has been said about about the buses by some other reviewers, they are a really good way of getting about and excellent value. However, those heading towards Valletta which stop near the hotel on the said busy road, don't always do so. Having got their fill of passengers in the resorts further away, they simply sail past or it's standing room only. A tip, if you're not wanting to go into Valletta, consider getting on the 202 or 203 to 'Mater Dei' (the main hospital on the island). From there you can change onto buses for destinations all over the island for obvious reasons.

I'm sorry I've had to mention so many negatives about this hotel but I also hope I've been fair. The traffic noise is beyond the control of the hotel. So long as you are fully aware of it and think you can cope, it's a good hotel with magnificent views across Sliema Creek to Valletta. The other things are just irritations at best and inconveniences at worst, things they will surely put right, won't they .....?

Room Tip: Front sea view rooms are very noisy due to busy road in front of hotel, although they do have excell...

We have just come back from a lovely 10 night break in Sliema Malta. During this time we stayed at the Waterfront Hotel for the duration of our Holiday.

We were greated by Joseph again and he carried our cases to reception and another familar face Jonathan took care of issuing our room keys and gave us some free wine vouchers for the Basilico ( helpful as always).

Inside room: We had a room that still had a small view of Valletta on the 5th floor and the views were nice. The room was bright and nicely decorated albeit the bathroom could do with a bit of a facelift . That said we always had hot water and the maid cleaned the room daily and supplied fresh towels if the old ones were either left in the bath or on the floor.
There is a safe in the room operated by a six digit pin number which is free of charge. There is also a mini bar in the room stocked with soft drinks beer and spirits at reasonable prices for a hotel. We put our own water in this which we bought from the shop next to the Kebab shop downstairs which was 3.5 Euro for 12 bottles of 500ml equivalent to 30 cents a bottle.
The Aircon in the room only operates effectively from 4pm in the afternoon until 11pm at night which was not too bad but it did leave the room stuffy in the morning. As previous posters have mentioned you do get traffic noise but it did not keep me awake but it is not pleasant to sit on the small balcony with all the noise and also loose the aircon function in the room.

Restaurant: The restaurant is on the first floor and we only ate their at breakfast. There are 3 choices of serial, cold meats, fruit, yogurts and full cooked breakfast normally comprising of , Fried eggs, Boiled eggs, omelettes, sausage , tomato, Bacon and beans. Pretty much the same every day but not a problem at all. Lovely dining area with views over the harbour. Service was OK and the staff would clear and reset a table if asked if they had not had time to action already.

Basilico restaurant: We ate here on one occasion and the Italian dishes were lovely and reasonably priced. The Salmone Pizza was amazing full of smoked salmon with prawns underneath on a nice base. Again a nice ambiance and not busy.

Star Bar: Not as good as last time i found both the male and female waitress miserable and so we went and had lunch and coffee in the Oblico restaurant 70 yds on the right as you come out of the hotel, great service and good food. It was great to read the Maltese version ot the Times newspaper. Much less stuffy than the UK version.

Skipper bar : This is the bar on the roof ( 8th floor) where the pool is and the drinks here are reasonable and so are the sandwiches. You can charge to your room and pay at the end of your hol if you wish. There is access through the doors for wheelchairs and disabled toilet facilities.

Swimming Pool: Well more of a dip tank really , about 20 feet long and 12 feet wide but ok for a cool off but no good at all for recreational swimming.

Pool Towels: These are supplied free by the hotel and are normally in your wardrobe or at the pool bar. Some are quite worn but do the job just the same.

Lounge Bar: There is entertainment on a few times a week but we did not stay to watch as we found the seating area stuffy and poorly cooled.

Summary: Loved the hotel as it is in a great position with great views across Valletta. We would certainly go back and we found the staff friendly and attentive but not in the Star bar. Buy a 7 day bus ticket for 12 euro and this can be purchased on the bus DO NOT USE THE 203 service to Nexar as this goes all round the houses in heavy traffic. Do visit St Anton Gardens get bus into Valetta and then bus 51,52 or 53 from bus stop 9 to ANTON this takes about 20 mins few mins after cisk brewery. The same bus route 52/53 goes onto rabat Mdina only 500yds from each other adn that journey takes 40 mins well worth the trip

Best Trips : Open top bus ( Malta tours) north and south tour. You get better commentary on this service and book at reception and save a couple of euro. Also the Red hop on off (15 Euro) which we have used before and are normally good gives only limited info and keeps advertising ( captive audience) Harbour tour with Luzzo cruises was better than captain morgan tour in my opinion but sit at the very front of the boat if poss for great views also the best views are if you sit on the right of the boat.

Favourite Restaurant close by: Tre Angeli 70 yds to the left as you come out of hotel. Food nice particularly Sea Bream but either sit outside or bar side in the bar area. Favourite in St Julian bay was Pauls Seabreeze restaurant they do an excellent seafood Pizza but do not have the half chicken as it tastes like its been re-cooked but we ate there 4 times and that was the only iffy meal.

Cost of trips for budgeting: Hop on off tours, 15Euro each with free harbour cruise but make sure you ask for it. Gozo tour and comino 50 Euro each.
We spent 700 Euro in 10 days and we were B&B.

Room Tip: Get bus into Valetta and ferry back. Steep hill

Room Tip: Email Jonathan before travelling
