“Nice hotel and helpful staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2009

A very nice hotel to stay. Neat rooms and good service. There is a swimming pool on the top floor from where you can enjoy the sun while overlooking the sea. The sea is only 50 meters away from the hotel.

The staff were very kind, nice and supportive. I had an issue with the airco and it was fixed very quickly. The hotel staff gave useful information about the local restaurants and other places to visit. What I liked the most was the free WiFi in all the rooms and lobby.

The hotel staff were nice enough to arrange our transfer from the airport to the hotel. I can recommend this hotel when visiting to Sliema, Malta. It's worth your money!

Good first impression, but found the room small and cramped, with twin beds that I at 6 ft 2 could barely fit in. Tried for a double bed but none available. I was offered a larger room but with the same small beds. The mattresses were thin with the springs digging in my back. The shower leaked - reported but not fixed during the stay - and the shower curtain rail kept collapsing.
On the roof sundeck, not enough sunbeds, and half of those with no cushions.
Our party had 3 rooms, and in 2 of those minor things went 'missing' during the stay - nothing expensive but annoying.
Only had breakfast meals in the hotel, adequate but basic.
This was our 4th trip to Malta - we'll be going again because the scuba is great, but NOT to the Diplomat.

The hotel has 104 rooms and only 21 are sea facing. We booked up for a sea view room but the room was facing a wall (apartment block). We had to stand on our balcony to see the sea and we had booked a sea view room. The window was facing a wall which was only 7 metres away. The dining room was in the basement with low ceilings which was very oppressive, like an air raid shelter. The staff were very good and the breakfast was adequate. The location was fair, on the promanade, between Sliema with the restaurants and St. Julians (quite a walk between each). Beware of the uneven pavements, promanade wonderful and so are the buses (good service and cheap on the buses but they are bone shakers). Take your own coffee!!!!

Location has got to be the key factor when choosing this hotel. The Diplomat is situated perfectly for a stroll along the sea front - and within easy reach of many bars and restaurants, some of which are of very high quality.

Parking is easy - just find a white boxed space in one of the side roads - but I would assume that these become premium in the summer season.

Rooms were a little tired - sheets, like the previous reviewer said slipped off - pillows and pillow cases fairly basic, TV remote control didn't work, and you had to be very careful as to where the shower head was positioned as any water on the back shelf of the bath ran straight onto the floor.

But saying that the sea view was marvelous - and being on the seventh floor meant that we heard the waves every night but not necessarily the traffic.

The cleaners use a great deal of spray - this means that the hotel does smell rather damp and antiseptic at times. As an asthma sufferer I asked them to keep this to a minimum in our room and they duly obliged with a smile. We did request a non- smoking room - however I am not convinced that this is what we received.

The roof top pool was a little cold at this time of year (beginning May) but will be great in the summer. There is a very nice rooftop sun area as well - this is a great place to relax.

Front desk staff met us with a smile - particularly Mr. Grech.

Breakfast had a great choice - nice bacon and eggs and other continental selections as well - lack of fruit was noted but you cannot have it all!

Notable bar was Oscar (St Julians) and if you want a special night go to Barracuda (expensive but worthwhile).

Overall I would say that this hotel warrants a 3 star rating - not 4 as advertised. For location and breakfast it is perfect - but it does need some updating, and the antiseptic /damp smell removed.

The Diplomat is an easy walk to the cafe strip of St Julians or the ferry and buses.

Like most of Malta the Diplomat could use a spruce up. It is however clean and cheap enough for somewhere to sleep at the end of a busy day site seeing.

The balcony is too small to enjoy properly. Bed and pillows were very lumpy and uncomfortable.

The breakfast was very basic and the coffee and juice was literally undrinkable. We saw a couple of little old ladies from a tour group with a jar of instant - it must have been their second day there!

The service was very poor - but that was our experience all over Malta. Not a customer service focussed place. My favourite was on our last night asking the desk clerk to confirm our taxi booking had been made - he told me - if its booked its booked. Of course at 4.45am standing on the street waiting it became apparant it wasn't bloody booked. Thanks to the lovely couple that agreed to let us squish in their pre-booked car!

We stayed in the Diplomat hotel for 4 weeks during March/April I'll start with the negatives. We stayed on level 7 the water pressure was not there,we lost the water for a number of hours during our stay. Bed linen was not changed every 3 days as they say, and the bed sheets that they supplied did not fit a double bed. The safe in the room one had to pay for the locking device, to secure it. No room service after lunch so if one gets sick like I did I had to go down to the lobby and get myself a sandwich. The television only had two english channels at first then we lost one all the rest were for clients from mainland Europe. The radio on the bed head was useless. Noise from Tower Rd one has to hear it to believe it. This is not a four star hotel, they will be pushing 3 stars. Now for the positives great view from the roof, and some staff very friendly also handy to shops and buses.

We feel anyone even without hotel experience could improve this hotel. Congeniality was not forthcoming. Requests and service at the front desk was met with indifference. Telephone messages were misplaced, found only after inquiring, delivered late or nor received at all. Room was outmoded, furniture and TV damaged yet the room was clean except for the fact that beds have no mattress pads and I found myself sleeping often on a bare mattress once the sheets slipped out. Gross! The extra blankets were family pet quality or better saved for furniture moving. Location is very good. Everything the hotel says about the surrounding areas is true. However, the amenities are average. Breakfast was OK-basic but no variety in 14 days. We never tried the other meals. We liked the view from the room best; service least. Stayed in room 503. There are no pubs beneath the hotel, and so, none of the noise. Sea view rooms, however, cannot avoid the traffic noise neither at the Diplomat or from any other seafront hotel. Room 203 had old carpet, while we had tile. The tile noise, however, from the maids dragging the furniture in nearby rooms was disturbing. We feel the hotel photos and four-star rating fool the traveler and so we’ve added a few of our own. “Stones Hotels” run The Diplomat Hotel and the Mediterranea Hotel and Suites, St. Paul's Bay.
