“Old hotel in a good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2013

Great location with easy access to public transportation. The Hotel is old and this is why it comes with a good price. Staff is friendly and breakfast was OK. Free wifi available in the room and common areas. If you don't have high expectations and you need something affordable to stay it is a good value for money.

You can't sleep with an open window due to noice from the street. With closed windows it was OK

The rooms certainly can get some renovation - old furniture, everything in the room feels and looks old - although, the mattresses seem to be new because this was one of the most comfortable beds I've slept on recently :D

If we put the need of room renovation aside, everything was excellent in the hotel! Very clean, daily cleaning services and quality, too - note that they change the towels if you deposit them in the bathroom (not as in mist hotels - when you throw them on the floor) - so do the environment a favor and keep them in your room ;-)

We took a sea view room and it was perfect - fabulous view, large room... we were not happy with the "double" room since it was a coupe of single beds moved together... but it wasn't a big deal for us. Be aware - it can be noisy so take a higher floor if possible (we were on 4th floor and still got plenty of noise from the street; i could only imagine what the noise would be in high season).

The hotel has good location, too - a bus stop nearby and a short walk (~20 min. through back streets) to the first stop of hop on hop off buses as well as the small port for harbor cruise, blue lagoon cruise, etc. It is like 2 min. walk from Surfside - a cafe-restaurant which had great food and also narghile bar after 3 pm every day on the -2 level (couldn't see it from the street at first)

VERY friendly staff - at the reception and at the lobby bar. We didn't have breakfast so i have no idea how it was. The coffee in the lobby bar i excellent though. There's also live piano music at some nights.

Overall experience - pretty good and good value for money! Recommended :-)

Room Tip: choose a higher floor if you have sea view room - 4rth floor was not high enough, we could still hea...

Definately it's not the most luxury hotel in Malta, but its location and staff make it worth choosing! Gorgeous sea view! Just behind the beach! The hotel is located near a lot of bus stops through which you could easily reach almost every interesting point at the island - the historical monuments, the old capital, the sandy beaches, plenty of nice bars, restaurants, the malls, etc. The whole staff is really polite and helpful! The food offered is quite good - various, a lot of typical meals, as well as all the other European dishes! If I plan to visit Malta again, I'd surely choose the same hotel!

Room Tip: Side Sea View rooms are quiter.

We lived in the sea-view room for 10 days in May.
Room is nice, but it is so noisy! Noise from cars. sea and wind! especially wind, almost windows are shaking. You can't even sleep or watch TV. Breakfast is average, but it's good that they have fruits. Pool is not heated, so it's meaningless, not very many sunbeds, some time it's no place for you.
But staff is very kind and attentive. But i'm not sure that it can have four stars.

Room Tip: corner suites with end numbers 04 are very noisy, but view is breathtaking

Booked a "Seaview Room" in February, 2013 for May 2013, for 10 nights. On arrival at the Hotel, told by abrupt receptionist "Seaview Room" was not available for the first 2 nights. No alternative but to accept this. Put in a very noisy room (traffic). Had to unpack, then afer 2 nights, repack cases to move to "Seaview Room".
Only offered Room price difference back. During our stay, met 2 other guests who experienced same. It appears from other Travel Agents that this is common practice for the "Diplomat Hotel". BEWARE!!!

This hotel claims to be 4 star and I am at a loss as to why and who gave this old and tired place anything other than 2.
The rooms are tired, worn and well used, it would appear the whole place is simply being held together by sticking plaster all rather sad as it could be so much more.
It's only saving grace is their breakfast it is pretty awesome however that does not make up for the list of negatives.

I would not be back.

Excellent location with a white rocky beach that has sparkling crystal clear waters. Everyone friendly especially dining room staff and bars. Food great and we really enjoyed the Maltese and American buffet. Had rabbit for the first time, it's good, really good. Beautiful promenade which is popular with joggers. If the price remain competitive we might come and spend winter there. Managers are always eager to help, so is the little housekeeper.

Room Tip: It is the location that makes this place great.
