Just back from 4* all inclusive with dine around. We booked with Mercury Direct.
My wife and I have been going to fortina 4*, all inclusive, (including dine around since inception) a number of years. We have seen the 5* tower and the rest of the massive Tigne Point complex rise out of the ground! Quite a few of the complaints over recent years have focussed on nuisance from this local re-development work. Thankfully the front of the hotel complex is virtually unaffected these days, in fact, there is far more noise from coaches stopping at reception to collect/drop off guests! As this re-development has taken shape, major work is now further back from the hotel.
We have always had a seaview room (superior seaview usually) with the fantastic panorama of Valletta spread before us as we sit on our balcony. We never tire of this view. For us, it represents everything about Malta.
However, further back from the hotel (only seen from rooms at back) a few cranes are visible, but I feel these are far enough removed now not to be a problem - unlike a year or two ago. Again, noise does not seem to be a nuisance anymore. Always remember, the Fortina comprises 4* (the flat fronted hotel) and the 5* tower. 5* guests can use any of the combined facilities, but 4* guests have a few limitations. eg, if you are on the highest level 4* package, (all inclusive, with dine-around), meals in the Japanese and Taste restaurant are available only at an extra charge, as are drinks in the 5* tower bar, and also I believe in the garden area pool bar. As to spa treatments, we have not used them, so reference to the hotel website is needed.
The staff are absolutely wonderful and always helpful. Some you meet as old friends again next holiday. Cleanliness again is very good. Look around, see how hard the staff work. The chambermaids work tirelessly, fitting in with your "please do not disturb/ please clean room" tag on your door handle. Some of the towells in bathroom are a bit thin due to wear. I am sure it won't be long before these are replaced on a rolling renewal scheme. In fact, the green towells that are now available for pool area seem to be better quality. However, the hotel is making great efforts to improve facilities throughout, the complex not just the 5*. Our 4th floor room was smartly decorated and very clean. However, (4*) the mini-bar is no longer stocked, (since 1st May 2009)but it is still powered as a useful fridge. (tip: Collect any bottled water for bedtime from the bar, but only after 7pm)
The sunshades around the front pool area have all been replaced (anyone remember the old blue ones you struggled with?) There are new, smarter, more comfortable tables and chairs around the pool area at the front. (We didn't use the garden area pool this time, so can't comment, but it was very nice in July 2008).
Yes, there may be a lift has an off day! TELL reception! I reported one stuck on the 4th floor, but repair had already been put in hand. Also, the reception to lift walkway area is quite narrow.
TIMESHARE. (Well that's what it is). You must have a harbour cruise trip, (the best 1.5 hours of the holiday).Your free harbour cruise tickets are collected from the timeshare reps when you go to La Vallette for breakfast. You are under NO obligation to have a presentation. A POLITE "No thanks" (sometimes more than once) is all that is needed! (They will still say good morning to you in the future, they are not offended!) They will invite you to make an appointment to look around the 5* rooms that are available. We DID do this a couple of years ago - we had no intention of buying, just wanted to see what it was all about. It did become tedious after an hour and half, so we politely said goodbye (a couple of times!) and left the meeting. Simples! REMEMBER IT IS YOUR CHOICE. There are far mor persistent (sometimes downright ignorant) timeshare/scratch-card touts in every main resort of Malta.
ENTERTAINMENT is usually a local singer or band, some sound quite good, but it is not really our scene, so no true opinion here. There is not much for children here. OK if very young and in company of parents, but I would imagine pre-teens and teenagers not old enough to venture out on own at night would soon be bored.
ALL INCLUSIVE DRINKS. This has always been very civilised, never having seen anyone who is there just to booze continually. In fact, the concept really speeds up service at the bar, just show your personal photo-id credit card style thingy you are given at check-in, and thats it. No Till, no change, very efficient. However, if you are not all inclusive, drinking could soon run up quite a bill for the holiday.
FOOD. Well, we always find a really good choice available, but occasionally the sweets can be a bit repetive if you only have a sweet tooth. They can be very rich, but I still can't resist. (Try to diet before going to Fortina as you will really enjoy eating there!)
Again, I personally feel a holiday at Fortina without dine around option is not worth considering.
If there is a special offer of upgrade to 5*, may be worth a try if at a reasonable cost. We did it last July, Taste restaurant definitely has better bacon at breakfast!. Also, meals from Taste eaten at a table in the lovely surrounding garden area is worth every penny.
I am sure the management are familiar with the public criticism over the last year or three and are making every effort to address outstanding issues. This hotel has been our favourite a number of years and is likely to remain so. We aim to return maybe October - hopefully not too hot for getting out and about. We have just had 30-31C these last few days.
