“Great place for a snack”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2012

I had a great snack at this restaurant, stuffed jacket potatoes with mince meat, a side of chips and an excellent expresso. My friends had pasta dishes and desserts, which were also very good. The prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is warm, and the service is also very good. I will return.

Well, Point de Vue is the only lodging in the central of Mdina. From Valetta to Mdina, drop by in front of HSBC bank and cross the road. There’s Point de Vue restaurant, the guesthouse is just upstairs. It’s surprised on my first sight to the double room, there’re TV with international channels, wardrobe, table, carpet, washroom attached. It’s like a more than a 2-star hotel rather than B&B or guesthouse. All the facilities worked in good condition, you paid for a guesthouse price, you gained the services in the hotel.

Mdina is truthfully a silent city, the heritages are closed and hence no visitors at night. It is serene and almost no noise, the restaurant is the source of vital ambiance, provided Italian foods and Maltese cuisines. Must try rabbit meat, the special culinary in Malta and the Maltese coffee with strong Anisette.

After staying in a variety of places in Malta and Gozo (including a rambling farmhouse and a self catering studio) we found Point de Vue refreshing and excellently located for exploring Mdina, Rabat and surroundings (the Rabat bus terminal is 3 minutes walk away, the walled city of Mdina is directly opposite the hotel and airport buses stop across the road). The rooms were serviceable and clean, but in need of modernisation in a few areas (the shower was poorly mounted/coming off the wall and getting a tolerable temperature was a fine art which resulted at best in a poor flow of lukewarm water). The bed, however, was comfortable and complementary bottles of water were provided in the room every day. Air conditioning costs an extra 10 euros (on a meter with charge-card) but a we asked for a fan instead which was provided free of charge. Our room had a lovely view across the countryside and we had no problems with noise. The staff, however, were somewhat surly.

The restaurant experience was mixed - the evening food itself was excellent (lovely fish for a great price) and the menu had plenty of interesting looking options but again the service was absolutely terrible (amongst the worst I have ever experienced). At first I thought perhaps the owners' surly teenage daughter had been forced to work and would rather be anywhere but waiting tables, but the surlyness appeared to be near ubiquitous across restaurant staff. Items were ordered and never arrived, no apologies for forgotten items were given and several times we had to get up from our seats (after waiting for around 30 minutes) to seek out a waitress ourselves.

Although the food at dinner was excellent, breakfast couldn't be more different. To start with, there was no price on the breakfast menu and when we asked the waitress (surly, again) she appeared to make up random prices depending on what we asked about. In the end we opted for just toast and "preserves" and coffee. We were provided with cheap watery instant coffee and a basket of burnt vaguely dusty tasting toast for 2 euros. Apparently, the whole breakfast (cooked bacon, eggs, beans etc with fruit salad and coffee cost 10 euros. Again, the service was terrible and we had to repeatedly get up and seek out a waitress to order or pay. I advise going to a bakery or another cafe nearby rather than eating breakfast here.

Bottom line: a great place to stay if you just want somewhere clean and convenient to sleep but avoid if you are looking for service or charm!

My husband and I spent a week in Malta and met so many lovely Maltese locals who were so friendly and proud of their island (icluding one man who drove us to the airport and took us to meet his family.) If only the staff at the Point De Vue could take a leaf out of his book! Not once did anyone ask us how we were, what our plans were for the day, or indeed offer any friendly conversation at all. This really did paint a poor impression, I have never experienced anything like this on a holiday before. We spent a week there and literally we would walk into the Point de Vue without any of the staff making eye contact, saying hello or anything! Get a grip Point de Vue! It is so important to make an effort.
On the plus side the hotel is in prime location, and the beds were comfy and cleaning lady was very nice.

I am certainly in agreement that this guesthouse needs refreshing! Having such high hopes spending our last two nights in Malta, "gutted" was my initial reaction. Previous accommodation had been fantastic, so on arrival, we came armed with our print out confirmation. First of all, it was not surprising that a member of staff had difficulty in finding my name on a very large penciled in agenda! We were finally shown our room, having settled the rest of our bill, in advance to find a room I would compare to a very old style back packer quality. Equally we had asked for a double room with a view of the Rabat countryside, to get two single beds, and a view from the balcony, admitedly very pleasant, but could not open the window officially, but agree that it could be done, as the window was clipped together! The bathroom, was minute, very limited, and I think the final straw was not having any toilet roll! I went downstairs to check my emails (free use of internet) for confirmation of what I had requested, then confronted the Manager! I was at first told, that I could put the beds together, and nothing else could be done, so I just put this down to experience, and was given a toilet roll!!
About 15 minutes later, we were on our way out, when the Manager/Owner offered us a room switch, with a view of the carpark infront. Despite the sound of that didn't particularly appeal to me, took him up on his offer and did not regret it. The room was amazing in comparison, certainly acceptable. And for this reason, the guesthouse is worth a mention. However basic, the situation is ideal for discovering Mdina, but is also very well placed for other visits. And I am sure because of this could end up returning!!

Only a couple of hundred metres from the main gate into Medina with free public car park in front of hotel (parking attendant will expect a small 'tip' €1-2).
To be honest the hotel needs a complete refurb as the rooms are old and tired with metal doors and suspended ceilings that you would expect to see in a 1970's office building! Would recommend you pay the extra for air con as stifling hot in late June. That said, for the location and reasonable price it was well worth the stay - we used the hotel twice - a week apart. Stayed in 2 different rooms - room 3 very large with a double and 2 twin beds with en-suite. Room 3 with double bed, shower and basin - strangely toilet is across hall - although private as you have the key! Both rooms have a great view over the island towards Valletta. The only other hotel in Mdina is £300 + per night... Staff all seemed quite helpful - if maybe a little slow in the cafe out front. Breakfast was a good selection. Would stay again if only for the location. Didn't use restaurant so cannot comment. 'Very good' rating given for location.

Point de vue is in a great location. It's on the outskirts of mdina (silent city). The views are amazing however don't let this fool you. During my stay, point de vue was a dreadful holiday experience. The management should seriously consider a fully refurbishment of the place and well trained staff. I have complained personally to the management. Customer service was dismal. Stay away from this place.
