“Lovely building, looks work-in-progress”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2012

This is actually an old family palatial home that had served as a school before it was sold to the current owners after years of disuse (the school was moved to a new location). It is a beatiful building and has undergone extensive renovation, but the rsetoration is still in progress. The cafeteria is nice and the staff friendly, but the food (I had a wrap, my companion a sandwich) was average. It has only been open a short while so I hope the whole experience improves over the coming months.

“A great place for afternoon tea”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

I was visiting Malta last July and decided to visit Mdina. It was hot and sunny so I had coffee and cake at Plazzo de Piro and very nice it was too. The cake was moist, the service was good, the waiter couldn't have been more polite and the coffee was hot and freshly made.
It was quiet when I went but really most enjoyable.

“Not usual Xara Service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2012 via mobile

We arrived at lunch on 17 August only to be met my a rude waiter. A young lady in our party asked for a dish only to be asked if she could read and pointed out that it was from the dinner menu. He may have thought he was being funny but he just caused embarrassment. Then another guest asked for something else to be told that was on the dinner menu. This gust, a Norwegian, pointed out that it says on the menu that these dishes are available all day and he asked the waiter if he could read English! The 8 of us opted to leave immediately rather than be served by a supersillious prat.

We went to the Terrace at the Xara Palace (same group) and enjoyed a pleasant lunch. We use the Xara group and will continue to do so rating a visit to the excellent Mondian as 5, three months ago.

It is unfortunate that some people tarnish the name of an establishment and it is be hoped that this guy gets more effective training.

“A walk down memory lane, but better”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2012

Having chosen Palazzo de Piro for our reunion (a fitting venue considering it used to house our convent school before its impressive restoration) I can say this was one choice I did not regret. Exceptional service, indeed.

What was meant to be a light evening meal turned out to be a full-blown multi-course feast, much to our pleasure. It was an all-round enjoyable experience. Both the food (complete with flowing wine and water) and the service were impeccable, not to mention the magical atmosphere the banquet room provided. And here I really must thank Johanna Ward for her top-notch coordination, and Karl and Silvan, who ensured a very smoothly-run evening.

Value for money? Absolutely.

“Smart and civilised cafe”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2012

We stumbled on this cafe quite by accident but were very glad we did. It's in the Palazzo de Piro cultural centre but is run by the Xara Palace, reputedly M'dina's best hotel (and possibly Malta's too). We ate outside in a smart, coolly white space with a glimpse through the walls over the surrounding countryside. Excellent and attentive service and good food and wine. The asparagus quiche with a side salad, a glass or two of house white and good coffee with petit fours, made a very civilised lunch for no more than about 15 euros a head.
