“good food, service and relaxing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2014

we've to the Trattoria a number of times for dinner. It's always pleasant atmosphere to sit in the open air, enjoy good food and good service.

“Simply terrible food - ruined a lovely evening”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2014

I honestly cannot believe how awful this place was. We booked in here for dinner whilst wandering around Mdina in the afternoon, mainly because we have always trusted the Relais & Chateaux brand, and also because we were impressed with the beautiful setting in the heart of the old town.

Our waiter was polite & helpful, and the courtyard setting was beautiful, but that’s really the only positive thing I can say about it.

First of all, we ordered the ‘Ftira’ as a starter – mainly because I had no idea what it was, and it sounded both traditional & tasty based on the description. What arrived was a huge toasted sandwich – a full meal, effectively, which was badged as a ‘starter’ on the menu. At no point did our waiter make this clear to us, and I barely managed a few bites before putting it down to avoid filling up. It was tasty enough, if a little dry (which our waiter had warned us, in fairness!).

But the real fiasco came with the main courses. We ordered a pasta dish with local sausage, and the burger – not traditional, but it sounded exciting from the menu, and we were in the mood. The mains arrived before our starters had even been cleared from the table. And when they did, the pasta was stone cold. Not just tepid, but actually cold – as if it had been sat out for about half an hour, not even under a heat lamp. I had to send it back, because it was inedible, and when it returned some 5 minutes later, it tasted as if it had been simply microwaved, and had almost no flavour at all.

The burger though was astonishing – the meat tasted as if it had been bought frozen from a value-bag at the supermarket (the ‘frozen’ part was confirmed by our waiter at the end of the meal). The bacon looked more like it had been boiled than fried, and the ‘truffle mayonnaise’ was nowhere to be seen. It was, frankly, totally inedible, and after the first bite neither of us touched it, and ate only the chips. I can honestly say, this is the worst burger I have ever been served in a restaurant in my entire life (and I’ve had a few).

The waiter was extremely apologetic, but not so much as to remove the burger from our bill (a couple of glasses of Prosecco came instead – though after the red wine we’d had, I wasn’t quite sure what the point was). We chatted to a few other diners in the restaurant, and they shared our general feeling about the place, though it’s obviously not in-keeping with other reviews. Given the beautiful setting, this was just a huge let-down. The real low-point of our entire holiday.

“Friendly local atmosphere”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2014

As a place end this welcoming, family friendly establishment is a lovely place to while away an hour or two.
However there are a few points to bear in mind: The portions - huge(!) - just order one course. Also the pizzas disappoint you'll be hard pressed to tell that any tomato was present - think a massive cheese on toast and you'll be close.

“Wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2014

Mdina always creates the perfect setting for a lunch. Therefore I decided to have a look at restaurants in Mdina. I decided to book at the Trattoria 1530 and I can say that my choice was correct. Staff was very friendly and the food was wonderful.

“very good pizza”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2014

managed to sit down for a quick lunch during our short visit in mdina. the pizza selection was vast and full with very interesting items. the service was fast and efficient and the pizza we chose was extra yummy.. filled with fresh toppings and a crispy base.. the food was delicious.. the only remark was that during our visit their were some workmen working in and around the bar that made loud noises throughout our stay and most diners seemed to be bothered.. other than that full marks on food and service...
