“Lovely afternoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

We recently visited the vineyard and had a lovely afternoon tasting the local wine. It is certainly the nicest wine we tasted locally. The vineyard is defiantly worth a trip and the owner is very knowledgable about the vineyard and local history. Lovely afternoon thank you.

“Tal-Massar Winery 23 Marsalforn Street, Xaghra, Island of Gozo, Malta”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2012

I recently enjoyed a tour of the Tal-Massar winery in Xaghra, Island of Gozo, Malta. This visit was organised under the auspices of the Gozo arts and culture festival known as Mediterranea - Mediterranea also includes wonderful operatic performances, by the way (Turandot & Madama Butterfly this year. Mediterranea is a diverse programme of activities - from archaeological to zoological. Gozo has a great deal in the away of cultural offerings to the visitor. The reason for this ? The residents of Gozo think this way and like to contribute to and consume such artistic offerings.

So, appropriately, it was a diverse group of people who took the Tal-Massar Winery tour along with me. I met a couple in the square in Gharb - she was a New Yorker and he was from an Italian/Maltese family - all through the tour so that was good from the start.

I learnt a lot about wine-making - both white and red production. Who knew that refrigeration in white wine production was essential right from the star ? Best of all - of course - was the tasting.

I enjoyed all the wines presented - four or five in total. White & Red. The memorable one for me was the 2010 "San Mitri Sangiovese of Gharb", a fabulous red wine with an ABV of 15.5% ! It was amazing - almost like a fortified wine, and all the better for that. Very enjoyable, and I would recommend it as an aperitif, particularly.

I brought back to UK a bottle of the 2010 San Mitri Sangiovese of Gharb label. We all loved it back in England. I look forward to stocking up again with wines from Tal-Massar.

“An absolute gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2012

This was one of the highlights of our stay on Gozo! If you are researching in advance of your trip and have any interest in wine you must come to Tal-Massar. Unfortunately I hadn’t done much research about things to do on Gozo and thanks to our hotel offering what they advertised as a local food and wine tour we happened upon this absolute gem. We booked in for Saturday 13th October, 2012. Marisa came to collect us in her car and as we had just had a storm, the tasting was taking place in the winery rather than at the vineyards but she still took us to the vineyards to show us them before bringing us along to the winery. The tour of the winery along with Anthony was absolutely wonderful – we learned so much and had plenty of opportunity to ask questions. He is very knowledgeable about his wines, vines, grapes and local area. The balcony of the winery has a breath-taking view and we were there to see the sun setting. The tasting was an absolute pleasure. The wines are of superb quality and highly commended by us. The Tanit was our favourite closely followed by the Garb. We had the opportunity to taste Marisa’s home-made sundried tomato paste, along with breads, crackers and local sheep’s cheese - all of which were absolutely delicious. It was a perfect way to spend an evening and we were even able to purchase a couple of bottles. Anthony allowed us to take a bottle of the Tanit but had warned us that it wouldn’t travel well. Anthony I can assure you it didn’t last long as we enjoyed it on our balcony that very evening. Many thanks to you and Marisa for this experience and we wish you all the very best for your future.
