“If you want a relaxing week in the sun, choose the Calypso”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2010

The Hotel Calypso is situated at the head of Marsalforn Bay, with stunning sea views. We stayed here for 8 nights on a bed and breakfast basis.

*Check in*
Check in was smooth and the reception staff were friendly and efficient.

*Rooms*
Our room was on the 5th floor, and had fantastic sea views. The room was decorated in neutral grey tones and, combined with the soft blue bed covers, had a tranquil feel.
The room consisted of 2 single beds to form a double bed, we also had an extra single bed as we were travelling with our 4 year old daughter. The room had two large wardrobes and plenty of drawers - lots of storage space although not that many coat hangers. A safety deposit box was available for 7 euros for the week plus 7 euros returnable deposit.
There was a small round table with two chairs, a dressing table, a tall cupboard containing the TV (lots of channels but only two English speaking channels - BBC World News and Nickolodeon) and a mini bar (didn't use this but seemed reasonably priced).
The bathroom was small but clean and modern. It consisted of a toilet, sink with mirror, shelves for toiletries (including complimentary shampoo, shower/bath gel, soaps and shower cap), a bath and an over bath shower, shaver point and a hairdryer. There are full length mirrors in both the room and the bathroom.
Our balcony had 2 plastic chairs and it was very nice to sit out on after an evening out.
All rooms have free wi-fi connection which I found very useful.

*Hotel Amenities*
There is a salt water roof top pool. It is not very big but is nice enough for a dip to cool off. The pool bar was not open in May. I imagine it would be open in peak season though.
In the reception area there were lots of sofas and tables, two PCs with internet connection (small charge) – although these were not working during our stay.

The hotel itself is very quiet and elegant. There is no entertainment to speak of however, and no children’s activities. It is very much aimed at couples who want a relaxing holiday.

*Restaurants*

On the first floor is the La Perla restaurant. This is where our breakfast was served. The breakfasts were fantastic. Delicious scrambled eggs, sautéed potatoes, bacon, sausages and an omelette station. There were also cereals, breads, cold meats, yogurts, pastries and several different juices, as well as tea and coffee. It really was a great start to the day.
On one evening we paid 11.95 euros each extra and had 3 course evening meal in the hotel. This was in the Luce D’oro restaurant on the 6th floor. The meal was delicious and such good value for money.
On the ground floor of the hotel are two more restaurants – one Italian and one Chinese, but we did not eat at either of these so I cannot comment on the food there. There is also a ‘Caffino’ which serves drinks and snacks. Try the cakes here, they are to die for!

We really enjoyed the resort of Marsalforn, lots of restaurants to choose from and we never had a bad meal. The people are very friendly too.

The resort seemed quiet during the week, but livened up at the weekends when families from Malta came over to Gozo.

Gozo is a great location for a couple wishing to get away from it all, or those who have a keen interest in diving as there were lots of diving schools and great diving sites. It’s not for those who are looking for a lively nightlife, or for those with young children who are used to kid clubs to entertain the little ones. There didn’t seem to be anything like that on the island.

We really enjoyed ourselves though, it was something a little different to where we usually go, and we would definitely return.

This hotel is on the Marsalforn waterfront, convenient to many restaurants. It has a rooftop swimming pool. The room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was good, except for the coffee, and espresso/cappuccino was extra (and also nothing special). There is no fitness center. The internet connection did not work. The front desk staff was not a lot of help - they struggled with questions about restaurants, bus schedules, etc. Like much of Malta, the hotel has an unfinished quality with exterior plantings for instance not completed. It's a decent hotel, but not up to European 4 star standards.

Thisis a lovely hotel located in a small, quiet bay on Gozo. Rooms are clean and well appointed and restuarant good.

We have just returned from another great break at our favourite hotel ever - The Calypso, Gozo. We first went there 37 years ago this Easter and have been staying there for breaks ever since, sometimes 3 or 4 times a year (apart from when it was being refurbished). We always stay half-board and seaview, as the view is fantastic, be it first thing in the morning, watching the fishing boats setting off, daytime or night. The food is great - a feast of a breakfast and delicious dinners. The staff are very polite, welcoming and helpful. The Calypso offers privacy yet warmth, the rooms are kept impeccably clean, yet cosy. To sum it up, it is a great hotel where one wants to return over and over again. J & G Eyre

The Calypso is a nice hotel that could be a great hotel. It is spotlessly clean. The sea view rooms have fantastic views of the Marsalforn Bay. Marsalforn itself is a bit dirty - lots of construction going on now. In winter, many of the restaurants are closed so it can be a challenge finding a decent dinner. You definitely won't find a good dinner at Calypso! The breakfast is fine ... but lunch is non-existent and the food at dinner is atrocious. Don't bother!
The hotel is decorated with peaceful, neutral colors - which I enjoyed. Unfortunately the floors are all stone, and are quite noisy. If you want to sleep late, you're out of luck here. The halls echo every door slam and foot step. The chairs make a screeching noise when moved ... and you can hear when your neighbors are moving their chairs! When the hotel is empty, it's very quiet and peaceful - which is what I was looking for.
The staff are quite friendly and hard-working. They try hard with what they've got to work with. All in all, I enjoyed staying there - as long as I went to bed early and ate dinner out.

I've been at Calypso Hotel end of December & again when it was refurbished in 2005. Now the service is disaster, poor breakfast no baked beans & no sausages only maltese sausages which is soo saltly & full of fats. The pots of tea & coffee always empty you have to ask the waiter every time. The cafeteria of the hotel offers only 4 types of local wine (The cheapest you use it @ home as house wine) no foreign!! We had a sea view room which is a bit small especially the bathroom. I liked the chinese restaurant, good service there. The hotel does n't have any gym, spa & car park. It has a small out door pool on the roof.

This hotel is in an excellent position on the edge of Marsalforn Bay. Knowing its prime position we did not pay the extra for a sea-view room and consequently we were in one of the rooms overlooking the street at the back of the hotel, which did not bother us as apart from sleeping, showering and changing we did not spend much time in the hotel room. That said the room was very nice with plenty of wardrobe space, a good-sized bathroom with bath and shower and plenty of hot water and fluffy towels. There was a mini-bar fridge in the room, which we took advantage of to keep some bottled water cool and some fruit. The fan and air-condtioning were much appreciated as it was very hot during our stay. The buffet breakfast was excellent and the staff without exception were all very friendly and helpful, which also applied to the reception staff. I took advantage of the internet access which is available in reception at a very reasonable rate. We also hired beach towels for the pool area situated on the roof - the towels can be changed as often as you like and the deposit was refunded at the end of our stay. We also hired the bedroom safe for the duration of our stay. The pool itself is quite small, but there were plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas - a word of warning - it can get quite breezy on the roof, so if you sit under an umbrella make sure it is tied to wall. The pool bar service was excellent and served drinks and snacks under a shaded area if required. There is also a small beach area at the front of the hotel. There are lots of places to eat in Marsalforn of note are Smileys, on the main promenade, which is cheap and cheerful and run by 2 friendly sisters. Pebbles and Latinis are both good, but more expensive. The Horizon in Qbjjarr Bay is also very good and is ideal for a long lunch sat at the water's edge. We didn't eat in the Chinese Restaurant belonging to the Calypso, but heard reports that it was worth a visit, perhaps next time. We will be back!!
