“Perfect rural getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2012

We have chosen Reikartz Karpaty for a relaxing ending to our busy Transcarpathian road trip and were only looking forward to a quiet rural getaway. From this viewpoint, the hotel has fully lived up to our expectations!

LOCATION

Reikartz Karpaty is located (tempted to say “hidden”) at the far edge of the village of Zhdenievo, surrounded by mountains, with the small Zhdenievka mountainous river nearby. It was not at all busy during our stay, so we had a lovely feeling of isolation; exactly what we wanted.

The way to the hotel is scenic. But if you drive, you have no chance to enjoy it, because the road is terrible, with lots of holes and rough spots on it. If you don’t drive, there are quite a few transfer options offered by the hotel.

PARKING AND HOTEL

The outdoor parking lot is right in front of the hotel. Half a day the car stays in the sun, the other half - when the sun hides behind the building – in the shadow. Parking is guarded and free.

The hotel consists of two buildings – the main one and the so-called Scandinavia. We booked a suite in the main building through the hotel’s web-site. The suite was located on the top floor and could be reached either by a small elevator, or stairs. There is no porter as such, but the receptionist has arranged a hotel officer to assist us with the luggage.

The territory of the hotel is not too large. There’s an outdoor children’s playground between the two buildings, and an open air terrace, reachable by some stairs, with the small round pool and some loungers around it. This terrace was where we preferred to eat, too, because the indoor restaurant looked somewhat depressing: its white colours and the smell of just finished maintenance gave an impression of a hospital. And the outdoor sitting was absolutely fantastic.

Some construction works (of the larger pool, if we got it all right), of which the hotel did apologise, were noisy but not too disturbing. They were finishing early, and the sound was rather monotonous and distant, so we could live with that.

The hotel’s infrastructure is somewhat underdeveloped. There was neither an ATM, nor a bank outlet in it; the nearest bank was several kilometers away. Luckily, you can charge your room with all services (restaurant, bar, recreation etc) and then pay with your credit card. If you need some necessities, the closest store will be in the nearest village, and it only will be quite basic; no supermarkets in the village.

There are some in-house activities offered, including bike rental, ping-pong, billiard and sauna as well as some tours, but we didn’t try either.

SUITE AND BATHROOM

This year only I stayed in about a dozen of suites in different Ukraine hotels, and the one in Reikartz Karpaty was among the best. Yet not without some downsides, sadly.

The two-level suite was amazing: stylish, clean, light and very spacious. It was on the top floor of the building, and the roof diagonals added more air. The lower level of the suite had a large comfy bed, a living zone with a sofa, some tables, a fridge and a TV, a dressing room and a bathroom. The upper one, accessible by stairs, had one low bed.

There was neither a kettle nor dishware in the suite, just a couple of wine glasses and glasses. A complimentary bottle of mineral water was available daily.

The suite offered stunning view from the balcony over the village in the valley between the mountains! There were two chairs on the balcony, and free WiFi signal was strong enough to enable perfect web browsing both in the suite and on the balcony. Besides, the sun has only faced the suite early in the morning and then was on the other side of the building. So we just loved sitting on the balcony with a cocktail delivered to the room and either talk, or browse the web. There were no neighbours on our floor, so the balcony was all ours.

On the downside, there were almost no sockets (power outlets) in the room! One outlet was upstairs, and those downstairs were either used for the room amenities (lamps, TV, fridge etc), or squeezed behind the heavy table that I had to move to reach them.

The bathroom was a huge contrast to the amazing suite. It did not have a single shelf by the sink, so there was absolutely no place at all to put your staff on. The bath itself was dangerously slippery, and no handles to grab if you happen to lose footing. The water pressure in the shower was a joke; it took me hours to wash my hair.

BREAKFAST AND RESTAURANT

The breakfast, included into the room rate, consisted of a buffet – not too diversified, but okay for a bite, and some selection of hot meals by choice, like eggs, scrambled eggs, sausages, fried fish, porridge etc. Not outstanding, but we never left hungry. Unlimited coffee from a coffee-making machine was available for free.

We have also dined in the restaurant quite a few times, and but for its interior (see above) enjoyed it very much. Traditional Transcarpathian meals were cooked really good; portions were sizeable and prices reasonable. But better avoid local wines by glass; these were awful.

Room service (delivery from the restaurant) was available and not overrated.

RECOMMENDED IF…

you look for a nice relaxing getaway in the lost faraway village. We have enjoyed ours greatly and would love to come back. But I assume it might get more crowded and noisy in winter when the skiers arrive.

Room Tip: The suite with the mezzanine floor in the main building is spacious, stylish and offers terrific vie...

It is in the middle of the forrest in a timy village which you would not even think it exists. The hotel has two buildings. We together with our friends rented out 6 rooms and they did not have enough rooms in the main building which holds the restaurant for breakfast. Our room was on the top floor with a purple coloring (beautiful) with a sleeping room which was big and an entrance area plus a shower bathroom. The breakfast is awesome and plenty. We had dinner in the restaurant next to the hotel (actually the other side of the skilift) and food (sashlik) was excellent as well. The hotel has a sauna/healthclub/billiard center but it has to be reserved well advance especially if you are in a group. There is a sauna next door as well however zou would need to pay for that. There is a rope skilift next to the hotel but as it is only a 50m route we choose to drive to a ski resort which is a 40km drive away. You can find an iceskating ring as well made on a tennis court and they poor water on it at the evening so it freezes at night. Loved it. I used to see such things back 20years ago at my middle school. It is an amazing experience for those who want to go back in time but dont want to give up their comfort.

Should you need any assistance how to get there, what to bring, where to go, etc let me know.
