“Good but not the best Protea hotel though”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

I liked the design the design of the room which is decently sized, the bed is very comfortable and Wi-fi available but everything is so pricey, it's a minus.

Service wise the staff are nice and helpful, good buffet and that's about it, as I mentioned previously it's good but nothing wow.

In my way in and out of Nigeria. The staff is great with the senior people coming from South Africa. Like all good hotels in Lagos it is expensive ( around $400). The food is very good and varied. The hotel has a nice pool and gym.

This hotel is smaller than some in Lagos and it's well designed. It sits next to a main highway and so avoid the rooms on that side of the hotel. The internal rooms are the quietest and therefore the best.

Positives: Modern and spacious rooms, very comfortable beds and dark rooms shutting out the light if you need to sleep in the day. Extensive Television channels and great movies on MNET. The bar is nice however smoking is permitted in there which is a pet hate of mine. There is a lovely courtyard in the middle where you can chill with some wine and watch those who brave the small pool. Staff are very friendly and helpful.

Negatives: the pool is tiny, it's more like a lane at a swimming pool, but it's there and has a fountain at the end. The gym is not very well equipped, I've stayed here a few times and it's usually got one piece of equipment broken. The food is ok, but very spicy and not at all good if you are a vegetarian, in Nigeria it's very difficult to find food as a vegetarian, so take as much with you as you can. The windows are sometimes not fitted correctly which affects noise and the AC of the room, so check this when you first arrive. DO NOT DRINK THE WATER, don't even brush your teeth with it, the hotel provides a bottle of water as it's not safe to drink, showering in it is no problem though. It's rather expensive, sadly everything is in Lagos.

Overall it's a much better option than the Sheraton opposite which is dated and very smelly. You will have a good time here, just ensure you have the right room.

Room Tip: Inside rooms facing the courtyard are always quieter.

Dear "GreenPanther30"

Thank you very much for taking the time to write your review on TripAdvisor.
We really value your input and use it to always strive to improve on our services and standards.

With regards to the water: our water has been treated to meet Worls Health Organisation potable standards, but we recommend the use of bottled water for drinking purposes. As a permanent resident in the hotel, I use the hotel water for brushing teeth and never experienced any issues.

Thank you once again for your review.

Kind regards

I stayed in Protea hotel for a night as I wanted a nice hotel close to the airport because I had a flight the next day. The hotel was pricey to say the least however there's little else I had left to complain about, well except the slow internet from my room. The rooms are well designed and furnished, i liked the bathroom design, it was modern and nice; service is great, staff were friendly; food was good, buffet breakfast and dinner had many options and were well presented. If price is not a problem you should definitely consider staying at this hotel.

I have been travelling to Lagos for 30 years and have stayed in all of the main hotels - but this was my first stay in the Protea Ikeja.
Initially I had the impression that this place is rather overpriced (even by Lagos standards) and it is pricey, but the bottom line is that it really delivers.
The whole place works perfectly; the breakfasts are really excellent, the reception areas are ideal for business meetings and there is a pleasant outdoor seating area which is ideal for the evenings, the rooms are spacious, clean and very well appointed.
Internet access is convenient and reasonably priced (unlike some other hotels in Nigeria).
This place has excellent security.
Service is generally good although not able to match the friendliness of the Protea VI.
If you are staying on the mainland this place and your budget can stretch to it, this place has to be the best bet.

Was back here while shuttling between Lagos VI and Ikeja during the month...moreso because it was close the airport where I needed to catch a flight to and for Abuja.

While it was great venue to organise and host a 50th Birthday bash for a lovely friend who was hopping back to the US that same night, Protea came in handy. I am not too too sure if I have attempted to elaborate on Protea Buffet! It's worth sampling if you have never been there. Will someone educate me if its only open to lodgers only, or non- Lodgers are allowed to see and sample what buffet should be please ?

I think hotels are generally overpriced in Lagos, but then you have to pay for what you want, and there lies the not so pleasant fact. Besides, good things aren't supposed to be cheap anyway, and that keeps dilution principle at bay.

I ll be back. As always, thanks for a great service...carpets are shortly needing to be changed all the same I think ?
