“Decent Restaurant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

We ate in the Blue Dog restaurant and it a very enjoyable experience.
The food for the main meals were both excellent. The one of the starters we'd very average and both sweets were good.
The location and restaurant were both good.
I would have given it a rating of four if it had not been for the slow service was was down to lack of waiters, the one who was present was very good.

It is beautiful character property with very nice swimming pool. Staff is exeptional and of the highest standard. You will be surrounded with care and many smiles. Rooms are also well equiped. The only minus is that it is 30min drive to Edinburgh. Also breakfast very expensive 14GBP.

My husband + I brought my Mum + Dad to this hotel on 29th April 2013 for three nights. It was partly to celebrate my Mum's 80th birthday but also as a trip down memory lane for them both as my Dad used to live in the village when he first started courting my Mum.

We phoned the hotel prior to our arrival + explained we had stayed here last October with my husband's parents using a Travelzoo voucher + explained to the Manager why we were returning again. He was genuinely interested in the reason for our return visit.

On our arrival he had arranged an upgrade to a suite for my parents. It was the biggest room in the hotel overlooking the hills to the front. They were absolutely delighted!

The rest of our stay could not have been bettered. ALL the staff were very friendly, yet remaining professional, and they went out of their way to help us in any way we needed. They are obviously very happy in their jobs despite working long, hard hours, sometimes having to deal with demanding guests, yet they remained friendly, considerate + attentive throughout.

The Manager, Jamie, obviously runs a fair and open policy with his staff and, despite them being very young, they were the best hotel + restaurant staff we have encountered in many years.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone and you will be guaranteed a good night's sleep, good food and a very warm Scottish welcome in a lovely hotel, so handy for Edinburgh, Rosslyn Chapel, Peebles + beautiful scenery.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have views over the hills. At the back they overlook the gardens.

first of all the location is great. it's a pity we didn't have time to experience the swimming pool! the breakfast is great, it is a buffet style of the full breakfast menu. the staff is very kind and friendly. as there are no restaurants around the hotel (it's located in the middle of the highlands), you have no choice rather than going to the restaurant downstairs. the price is not expensive, with good atmosphere. the taste of food is not that amazing but okay. you can go for a walk and hire a mountain bike. it's definitely a good place for a holiday. just don't forget to bring comfortable shoes.

Stayed for 2 nights on a bed and breakfast deal from laterooms...paid a good price for the 3 star hotel..hotel is lovely and the grounds are stunning..Really think that people should take a step into the real world when leaving reviews..You pay 3 star price and expect 5 star accommodation..Get Real Please...the hotel is clean,,comfortable and the rooms are the same...Food was lovely and the breakfast was delicious.. The staff here are the nicest most courteous workers i have came across..always smiling and nothing is to much bother...We had a relaxing peaceful 2 day break and wouldnt hesitate to go here again,,,Well done and thanks to all the staff for making us so welcome....To all you people who just pick silly minor faults break your piggy bank and go to a 5 star ..Enjoy..

We stayed here for 3 nights in June with our 2 children and had a great time. The room itself was adequate and clean and for the price paid, was fine. However, there really are some stand out positives here. The location is beautiful and there are acres of gardens and woodland to walk around set amongst stunning countryside.
The food was good and we ate at the hotel twice and enjoyed it both times.
We felt that the real stand out positive about the place was the staff. Mainly local guys who really went out of their way to welcome us and were very accommodating and friendly with the kids too.
As you walked around the hotel, all the staff went out of their way to smile and say hello which we thought was great. Lovely atmosphere. Well done guys!

The location is ideal for exploring the Border Country, set in beautiful park lands the Barony Castle Hotel looks impressive as you drive up to the main building.

The car park is fairly large but the Hotel lacked any porter staff to help with the luggage, that was a bit of a drag as it never gives good first impressions.

Reception staff were helpful and friendly, again no offers to help with the bags.

Rooms were clean and adequate but the bathroom lacked shelves and was small.

The Hotel suffered from creaking floors boards and you could hear people above you and by the side of you all the time.

The service in the restaurant was pretty good but the menu was not that expiring but again adequate. Breakfast was much better and plenty of choice. Margaret, the morning waitress was a delight.

Unfortunately, for us, our room (204) was over the main entrance and on the Saturday night there was rather a large wedding going on. That was not a problem but it appeared that a lot of guests congregated outside the main entrance very late. The noise was horrendous, and went on until about 1.00am.

So if your staying here, check that no wedding is on and miss room 204.

Shame really as it spoilt our visit.
