What a gem of an hotel. Small, and run by a friendly, dedicated team, The Altinkaya is a haven of charm and friendliness set amongst well-tended gardens at a point where the road begins to rise into the foothills of the Besparmak Mountains - well, the ridge of mountains which rise behind Kyrenia aka Girne. The aforementioned dedicated team is not only dedicated to the hotel itself, but also to its guests, for whom nothing is too much trouble. Impressive service from the staff through every aspect of hotel life from the management down ensures a memorable holiday or even business trip. The rooms are lovely, clean and amazingly quiet. They are cleaned daily along with the sheets and towels and the two ladies 'what do' -Songul and Fatosh - are simply delightful. The hotel cats are well-behaved and most will submit to stroking and cuddles. They are looked afer and have a feeding station, so titbits from the tables are discouraged. Breakfast offers a chance to steer away from cornflakes, eggs and beans because there is a plethora of healthy options such as tomatoes, cucumber, fresh, tangy cheese, fruit, often some Turkish style rolls and bread there is usually something to tempt the pickiest of eaters. Dinner too consists of a buffet of hot and cold mezes of which you are free to make your selection before being served with your choice of main course. (The fish dishes are excellent) For pud there is a selection of sweets and fruit on offer, but I am a sucker for blancmange and most days my dreams were fulfilled! (Yes I attend Blancmanges Anonymous - there I've confessed!) People say that the options could be broader and the portions larger, but seeing you are getting a three course meal for what amounts to about £7.50 I certainly have no complaints. There is a weekly barbecue evening where music is provided. Rock Around The Clock is not my idea of a musical entertainment and in the pastoral and verdant setting of the Altinkaya a string quartette playing softly in the background to my mind would be more appropriate. Am I bovvered? No. I shall definitely be returning in the near future to be assailed by those fabulous folk known as Stephanie, Melissa, Rambo, Songul , Fatosh and all the staff (and Catatturk the magnificent feline!). Go, enjoy, relax and become enchanted by the down-to-earth friendliness of the staff and dont be surprised when, on subsequent visits, you bump into guests you befriended earlier. Yes, even the guests talk to each other and friendships forged. Go on! Help yourself to the Altinkaya magic; you won't be disappointed!
The 'bungalows' 201 onwards are cool and shaded in the heat of the afternoons.
