“Not luxury, certainly adequate”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2014

As other reviewers have said, the Breidafjordur is pretty basic. Probably not the choice for a honeymoon or extended stay if you're planning on spending a lot of time in your room, but certainly adequate for an overnight on the Ring Road circuit. What it lacks in amenities receives some compensation from the kindness and friendliness of the owner, and the good breakfast. Beds were actually some of the more comfortable we encountered on our tour. There are no facilities for dinner, but several good restaurants within a few steps. Spotlessly clean, as is the norm in Iceland. When we arrived Laura had left a key, instructions, and her phone number for us, so there was no problem checking in. Stykkisholmur is a beautiful town, but it is quite small and all can be seen in a few hours. The Breidafjordur was just fine for our limited time there.

I don't want to be unkind, but this was the most depressing room we encountered along the ring road. It is very basic, the doors to the room and bathroom are industrial grey giving the feeling of being imprisoned. As mentioned by another reviewer, the curtains are very thin and are no match for the sun. The towels were so crunchy and scratchy. The lady that runs the place was nice and the bed was comfortable, but that's about it.

Nice, quiet and cosy place to stay. Room downstairs with great Shower. Breakfast was very good. The owner, Laura, let us take lunch packages as if we weer going on a six weeks trip. She allowed us to use her kitchens watercooker and waved us goodbye at the doorstep. I would defenitely go there again.

We were very optimistic about this hotel when we arrived in the village because it was such a pretty place and obviously popular with tourists. However, we couldn't make anybody hear the first 2 times we tried to check in and had to return hours later before we could unpack. The room we had was big but basic and in need of some maintenance. The toilet was also dirty on arrival making me cautious about the general cleanliness of the place. It was the only place we stayed in our 15 day tour of Iceland where the host did not live on site and there was no restaurant or dining room available so we had to find somewhere to eat at night. The host we eventually found and who served us breakfast, was very friendly and helpful and the location is spectacular but there are much nicer places to stay in Stykkisholmur than this one so look around. I got the impression that this was a good little earner for the owner and therefore minimal effort was being made to maintain it and optimise the experience for travellers.

We stayed for one night and arrived were greeted by a nice friendly lady called Sara, the room had our extra bed pre made up and was downstairs, making it silent and it was a nice big room, when i told Sara were leaving early before breakfast by a few hours she wanted to leave some cereal out for us or make us some sandwiches, a lovely nice friendly gesture and its nice to see some goodwill still exists. Larger establishments with more stars were much less inviting and hospitable. The Hotel is right next to at least three choices of restaraunt.

We stayed in hótel breiðafjörður in June 2012 for two weeks. The owners are very friendly and made us feel very welcome. They speak excellent English and gave us plenty of useful information about the local area and things to see and do.

Our room was simple, clean and the bed was super comfortable with a proper duvet. The wifi did not reach our room, so when we needed internet we sat on the lovely comunal balcony. There aren't any blackout blinds, so a sleep mask might be needed if you struggle to sleep with light.

Breakfast was a good selection of cereals, cheese, bread, boiled eggs, meats, fruits, jams, teas and good strong coffee. There was also the occasional home baked fruit loaf or pancakes as a treat.

We found hótel breiðafjörður a really great hub from which to explore and we will be back!

Room Tip: Wifi does not reach all rooms so it wifi is important, ask the owners if they can chose a room with...

Stayed at the end of August 2012 and the light-through-the-curtain issue had still not been solved. If light bothers your sleep, bring eye shades.

Our room was in the basement and was bigger than most rooms we had in Iceland. There was a nice desk to write on. The room was quiet and the bed was comfortable. WiFi did not reach our room.

Easy walk to the harbor and restaurants.
