“Brilliant Glacier Walk!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2013 via mobile

We spent an afternoon on a Glacier Walk with Arcanum Adventure Tours and had a brilliant time. Tommas the tour guide was friendly and informative - with lots of entertaining stories along the walk - as well as practical information and good instructions for the walk. The group size was good (8 people in total) and everyone seemed to really enjoy the trip.

We contacted Arcanum the day before and we got a quick and helpful response from Benedikt and were able to book for the following afternoon.

The tour was great value for money - we spent a couple of hours out on the glacier and went pretty far up for some fantastic views - and learnt lots about the glaciers and Iceland's geography / geology.

Would highly recommend - we only wish we had more time in Iceland to try out some of Arcanum's other tours and activities!

“Accessible and informative”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2013

We had previously booked a tour with another company, thinking that we would be given transportation from Skogar to the glacier (we didn't have a rental car), but upon finding out that that wasn't the case, Arcanum and Tomas scheduled a glacier walk for us 24 hours later. For a small additional fee, Tomas gave us a lift from the campground at Skogar to the car park by the glacial tongue.

As a couple where one of us is an experienced ice climber and the other was stepping onto the ice for the first time, our guide Tomas accommodated both of our skill and knowledge levels. He took great care to provide adequate safety provisions with equipment, instructions on how to properly use it, and with pointing out dangerous areas on the ice. We ended up being in a group with three others; the small group size was great. It allowed us to have gain a lot of personal anecdotes from Tomas and to set a relatively brisk pace. Tomas provided interesting information about the geological features, creating a fun educational atmosphere. He also had a great sense of humor and wore the greatest wool sweater for the climb!

We enthusiastically recommend Arcanum!

“Interesting even in a blizzard”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013 via mobile

It really is an essential part of a trip to Iceland to get onto a glacier. Whether it is walking, in a jeep or on a snowmobile is up to what you like. I am glad I chose the snowmobile as you get to the centre of the glacier, not just the tongue, you are out in the elements, and you gave the fun and challenge of riding your own snowmobile without falling off or rolling it.
It was cold and only limited visibility but the protective equipment kept me warm enough. If you can choose a low wind and clear day you will see a lot more than I did but today was the only day I could do the trip so I had to cope with poor weather.
The guide was friendly and very aware of safety. If you have a car it is an easy day trip from Reykjavik.

“Great time snowmobiling on Mýrdalsjökull glacier”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013

We rented a car and had no problems locating the starting point. You get a full snowsuit and helmet (it was warm enough outside that snow pants and jacket were not needed under snowsuit). We booked a custom time, so had a small group of 6 people. Our guide, Adrianna, was fantastic - friendly and informative. The trip up to the snowmobiles in the super jeep was pretty quick, and then we received instructions about how to drive. We set off across, up and down beautiful untouched fields of snow. Adrianna told us a lot about the volcanoes and glacier during the stops (about 3 where we got off the snowmobiles and walked around). Plenty of time for photo-ops. Despite getting stuck once in large snow rutts from other snowmobiles (Adrianna rescued us) and a complete wipeout later in the tour (we were ok!) it was a lot of fun and a once-in-a-lifetime experience for us. Worth the cost, especially with Arcanum's reasonable prices, in our opinion. Thanks Arcanum!

“Should have been better”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

We like to support local businesses and when we were looking for a tour operator for an ice climb at Solheimjokull, we wanted an outfit that was local to the area. Arcanum fit the bill and its prices were reasonable.

We showed up at the appointed hour to the parking lot and got fitted with our crampons. We had a group of 7. When the tour began, the guide shot off like an arrow across the field, with the group in a line trailing behind. We were towards the end of the line and just slogged along for 15-20 minutes until we reached the base and the guide showed us how to put on the crampons. Then the guide was off again on the glacier, trying to find a suitable spot for the ice climb. Again the group trailed along for another 10-15 minutes. A location was secured and the guide set up. The guide gave a quick tutorial and then each person in the group was given an opportinity to climb. That mean that everyone else had to stand around and wait. We waited until the end, which was over 30-45 minutes. The climb itself was challenging, much harder than it looks. It was a short climb, no more than two stories high. After the climbing was over, the guide told us he had to hurry back because had another group waiting. So it was basically the same thing back, the guide out in front while the group trailed in a line behind. We got back to the parking lot and it was over.

We paid around $105USD per person for this tour and we thought it was of poor value. We never had a chance to talk to the guide and didn't hear anything informative about the glacier or ice climbing. Too much of the time was spent waiting, though I understand that only one person at a time can do the climb. I would not recommend Arcanum's ice climbing tour.
