“Fabulous stay just outside Vik”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2013

We stayed 3 nights in Room 7 in Feb. 2013. The hotel is run by a wonderful couple, Johanne and Margret. The room was large, bright, comfortable, and clean. Johanne took us (hubby, I and our 9 year old daughter) on a glacier hike. He was wonderful, informative, careful, and super with our little girl. Margret was a wonderful cook. We ate at the hotel for 2 nights. For both nights, my daughter requested roasted chicken and rice for dinner (her favorite food at home) and Margret made it for her even though it was not on her menu. Great place!

Vik is gorgeous. We went to the black pebble beach and we also visited Dyrholay. Gorgeous! We also drove to Jokulsarlon. Unbelievably beautiful. Make sure you walk down to the beach and see the stranded icebergs. We went on 2 separate days and the scene was noticeably different. One day, the beach was littered with small, white or clear icebergs. The next time, there were a number of large blue icebergs. We got some awsome photos!

At the last day, we decided to cancel our hotel at Hella and book a place in Laugar, near Lake Myvan, for a chance to see the Northern Lights and more of Iceland. Well, turns out the hotel we picked was run by Johanne's cousin! Johanne made the call for us and confirmed our room. I am happy to report that not only did we have a very comfortable stay, we also saw the Northern Lights!!! The East Fjords and the Northern Plains of Iceland are incredibly beautiful. If you have a car and the time, try to drive the entire Ring Road. It is well worth the effort!

Room Tip: Room 7 is huge but faces the front of the hotel. It was very quiet when we were there but in the su...

We stayed for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. This small hotel (7 rooms) is located just outside of Vik and you definitely need a car to get around. It is decorated with modern decor that utilizes the black sand from the area. The breakfast each morning was a very nice spread of cereals, juices, coffee, teas, deli meats (ham, salami), cheese, breads, crackers, homemade waffles, jams, real maple syrup, and sausage (more similar to U.S. hot dogs, but tastier). We opted for dinner one night (there is only 1 entree that will be served that night, but I believe that vegetarian requests will also be accommodated). We had chicken breast with a choice of mushroom or garlic sauce that was divine. We definitely should have opted for dinner the other nights, but wanted to see what other selection Vik had to offer. We were stuck at a gas station-type cafe that was not very good, and Hotel Lundi for the other night (which was decent), as not too much is open in the off-season. Johann, one of the co-owners of the Hotel, took us on a glacier walk and a local tour of the area. We had so much fun and learned a great deal about the area and landscape. He is an expert mountain climber and volunteers with the search and rescue team, so we felt that we were in very good hands. I would highly recommend taking one of the Mountain Excursions from the Hotel as it is an excellent (and fun!) way to explore the area. We also drove to Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon one day on our own, which is only 90 minutes away or so. It was a nice day trip. We would definitely stay here during our next visit to Iceland.

Thank you to Margrét and Johann and the team at the Volcano for going above and beyond. 4 of us stayed one night in early March 2013. Great value stay as we had dinner at the hotel which turned out to be fantastic a arctic char dinner - I am now "hooked" on this fish. Restaurant quality meal and service and you can BYO your bottle of wine. Breakfast was also an excellent Icelandic style buffet. Rooms are fairly simple but very well appointed and comfortable and big windows are set to capture the northern lights (if they show themselves). 12 km from Vik so suggest staying in for dinner - you would be extremely lucky to find better elsewhere and the dining room has a really lovely atmosphere. The team can't do enough. However, 2 days later on our return trip past we ran into a very bad Icelandic blizzard and found ourselves marooned in Vik for hours with very scarce info. Contacted Margrét and Johann who could not have been more helpful with their advice. They offered us beds but suggested we push on to get past the storm (despite the potential profit of 4 people possibly marooned for several days). Margrét your kind and calm assistance is remembered fondly.

We stayed here for 3 nights in August 2012 and it was outstanding. A great base to explore the southern coast of Iceland, from Skogafoss and the Fimmvorduhals trail to Dyrholaey to Seljavallaug. The rooms were modern and clean. We loved the black stone floors! Our only regret is that we did not have dinner there one of the nights, the food looked (and smelled) fantastic.

My boyfriend and I were driving towards the east coast when weather got the best of us. It was 9:30 pm and we were desperate for a place to stay. The heavens sent us some luck because out of the blue, or darkness, we found the Volcano Hotel. This is by far the nicest hotel we have stayed at in Iceland. The hotel itself feels very modern, clean, and crisp. The rooms are simple, yet stylish and the bedding allows you to get lost in your dreams. The breakfast, which is included in your price, is incredible! Ham, cheese, toast, 3 cereals, fruits, crackers, juices, eggs how you like, and the most delicious waffles your mouth has ever tasted! Tea, coffee/espresso and hot chocolate are also served and provided at no additional cost throughout the day. We stayed an unexpected second day at the hotel due to a massive blizzard and enjoyed our snow day inside!

Our family (grandparents, parents, son/grandson) booked rooms for 1 night at the Volcano Hotel, but enjoyed it so much that we extended our stay. Everything at the Volcano Hotel is done exceptionally well, including fresh spacious rooms (designed by Margaret), interesting black lava floors (by Johann), extremely comfortable beds, great dinners and breakfasts, and a nice lounge area. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip with Johann to a glacier near the Katla volcano with great views, accompanied by interesting Icelandic tales and history from Johann, lots of information about Katla volcanic activity (eruptions, etc.) under the Mýrdalsjökull icecap and subsequent flooding (called Jökulhlaup). Margaret and Johann are wonderful hosts and went out of their way to make our visit the highlight of our Icelandic vacation.
