“Very good hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2014

Me and my famly had a nice time. It was charming hotel with heart. I dont think it looks great from the outside but inside it was very nice. We stayed in one of the new rooms and they look great. It has a nice restaurant that you have to try.

Absolutely loved our stay in this hotel. Our room was spacious and very nicely decorated with a lovely view on the city center. Loved the clearly new shower. Moreover the bathroom was very clean. Staff was very friendly. The day we left, we were still in our room getting ready, when the cleaning crew entered. Afterwards when we checked out we got apologies for this mistake from the staff at reception, explaining they were using a new system.

We didn't try the restaurant though, so can't comment on that. Since I had read that the restaurant was very good, I had high hopes for breakfast, but was a little disappointed. Options for breakfast were very basic.

O, the wifi works fine, but it is a nuisance that you have to log in time and time again to use it.

We were a couple staying here for one night, and even though the hotell looks sort of worn from the outside, inside it is very nice. The room had a great view, a comfotable bed and a very nice bathroom. The staff was very polite and helpful as well. And the best part about the hotel is the extremely good restaurant Einsi Kaldi. We stayed for 9 days in Iceland and the best meal on the whole trip we had here in this restaurant.

We stayed here for two nights, and I fell completely in love with Heimaey, which has a very retro feeling compared to the rest of mainland Iceland (or the parts that I saw in the West, South, and Southeast). The hotel had mixed rooms, admittedly, and we lucked out and got one of the NEW rooms which is pretty make-it-or-break-it for what your experience will be with this hotel. I had peeks into the older rooms when they were being cleaned. Our room was on the second floor, was as quiet as could be, was beautifully decorated and large with a really comfortable bed, and had good amenities. The downstairs lobby and restaurant were exquisite, the price was great for Iceland, and we found the reception to be friendly.

It's extremely well-located, right near the port -- but not too close to the port -- so that you can walk everywhere. It's particularly close to the old portion of town which was sadly destroyed by volcanic activity and which makes for a nice, if not macabre, hike that also passes by extraordinarily beautiful beaches, a reconstructed stave church, and so forth. There is a supermarket nearby and several boutiques, and a most wonderful little aquarium. But I digress too much about the locale.

This is a well-recommended hotel PROVIDED that you do get a "new" room. I would still likely stay in an old room over any of the guesthouses in area, or at least the ones that we passed by. The only oddity was the hot pot, which was sort of in the basement and had this weird vibe that I couldn't place, filled to the gills with tourists who were just a bit to merry for my taste.

Room Tip: Pick a "new room." Be sure of this. These are the grey rooms.

Here with a tour and very pleased. Room is neat and clean with a Scandinavian feel. I have a corner room with great windows. Beds are comfortable with comforter encased in white, pressed cotton duvet. Front desk staff pleasant and greets you every time they see you. Restaurant staff is also charming. The chef appears in the restaurant to check that you are pleased - a nice touch! Remember, this is a small place in Iceland so do not expect what you get at a five star hotel in the world's larger cities.

Recently refurbiished, this centrally located hotel is a very good base from which to explore Heimaey. So it is a pity that in the upgrading the owners allowed some design faults in the en-suite bathroom. In the bathroom adjacent to the room I occupied, the very flimsy thin plastic toilet seat had broken from its hinges, a bracket at the top of the shower fell off (I was able to fit it back on), and the small basin had a shelf located over it that made cleaning one's teeth awkward. Designers should always try out the equipment they recommend be installed.
Fortunately, there are more positives than negatives I would want to report on for this hotel. The room I occupied was attractively furnished and laid out, with a very comforable bed. There was a very large mirror, good lighting, a useful writing desk, very comfortable stool (though no chair), TV, plenty of space for luggage, and very good hanging space for clothes. The room was very well insuated, and has a wonderful paroramic window. The bed quilt would be ideal on a cold winter's night, but was a bit too warm for me in June; providing a blanket as an alternative option would be good.
The breakfast is excellent, and available from 7am. The restaurant for lunch or dinner appeared primarily to cater to coach groups, and I thought overpriced. The Slippurinn, near the port, is an excellent alternative option, though it too is fairly pricey. Otherwise, there aren't a lot of options
So, some small flaws in an otherwise very good hotel. Those flaws could be fairly easily remedied.

I had room 309 which had great views of the town and the volcano. It has a door to a balcony which is is also accessible from the hallway. I never saw anyone on it, though.

The room is in the “old” section of the hotel, but it was nicely appointed. Big, flat-screen TV, Scandinavian-designed furniture, including a desk and bench. There were twin beds with show-white, crisp linens. The bathroom is small, but OK. Shower only.

The hotel restaurant is excellent. At different times, I had lobster bisque, lamb (the most flavorful and tender I’ve ever tasted) and a variety of soups. Their home-made bread is excellent.

The buffet breakfast is fine with everything you would want on it, but put out in small quantities, so you have to return to the buffet several times.

The hotel is around the corner from 66 Degrees North, an excellent store of Icelandic-made rain and extreme cold weather gear. It is not inexpensive, but very high quality. If you are staying at the hotel, the store gives you a 15% discount, this coupled with the 15% tax (returned at the airport) makes their gear almost affordable. Do take a look at it.

The staff is very friendly and helpful.

I couldn’t get wi-fi either in my room or in the lobby the first two days I was there. On the third day one of the receptionists showed me a “back door” thru the hotel website which worked beautifully.

I happened to see some of of the rooms on the first floor of the “new”section of the hotel. They were more modern, large, with good-size bathrooms with a lovely rain-shower. Very nice too.

Room Tip: If you would like a view of the town, harbor and volcanos, ask for a room higher up.
