“Excellent and unusual food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2013

I ate here as a guest of an Icelandic colleague, so have no idea of the price, although I expect it was rather expensive. The dishes are, as others have said, rather unusual and drawn from the local cuisine - a yogurt brulee, for example. We were offered a rather restricted menu (perhaps a prix fixe arranged for our group) based on fish and lamb, but everything was tasty and very satisfying. The food was not amongst the >very< best meals I have ever eaten but it did approach that standard, so five stars!

The servers were attentive and very cheerful. The restaurant room is relatively small and the tables are relatively closely spaced. The evening I ate there, almost every table was full and the atmosphere was busy but in a pleasant, everyone-friendly-together way. That leads me to suspect that reservations are advisable.

I have long hoped to make an extended visit to Iceland, and if I get that chance, I will definitely return.

“Unique Icelandic dishes”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2013

This is the place to go for unique Icelandic dishes such as whale, seabird and horse. Every dish was beautifully prepared and presented. We had the fin whale and the guillemot, both of which were delicious. The staff were courteous and attentive and fully able to answer our questions about their unusual dishes. This is a must visit restaurant for adventurous dinners.

“unusual eats!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2013

We were recommended by our hotel receptionist to visit here and we were not disappointed. If you are looking for traditional Icelandic fayre, especially seafood then this is the place to go.

A little off the main street in a residential area.Would recommend you book as it does get very busy. It is a small cramped place with the tables very close together, so having your conversation overheard by others is the norm. Even getting to the toilet is pushing your way through the crowd stood at the bar.
The service started out a little cold, unfriendly and not too welcoming, however, the waitress that took our order was much more polite and friendly.

We had smoked puffin and minke with smoked heroin for starters, followed by guillemot & Icelandic Fish Hash. Portions were quite large and plentiful. Not for the faint hearted, but definitely worth trying.
As with all restaurants in Iceland, this was not cheap, but would recommend

“Quaint & delicious!”

Our concierge at the natura hotel recommended this restaurant for local iceland cuisine & she was right! I had peppered whale tail that was delicious! Steve had a fish dish that was also very good!

“A cuisine highlight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2013

Þrir Frakkar has a well-deserved reputation for quality traditional fare, cooked to perfection, and my visit only continued to prove their reputation to be true. The service was excellent, attentive and timely without being intrusive, and the atmosphere of the restaurant was warm, all polished wood and intimate. While my tastes don't extend to endangered animals, the mixed herring sampler was attractively presented and delicious, and the horse tenderloin as a main was fantastic. Everything a beef steak promised but so often fails to deliver, it was meltingly tender, cooked to a perfect rare, with a developed crust. The accompaniments were carefully chosen and complemented the meat beautifully. Finishing with the skyr brulée was an excellent choice, also: light and almost mousse-like, with the crunch of caramelised sugar, it was the perfect ending to a fine meal. I would definitely return to Þrir Frakkar, and recommend it to anyone looking to commemorate a special holiday or event.
