“Ok”

This was ok. Quite a small museum. Has a café. All bags, coats etc need to be stored in lockers downstairs before entering museum.

“National museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2013

Very modern building with excellent facilities. Lockers provided for coats etc. Interesting to see parallels of our history and Iceland's. Worth having the audio set; it's lightweight and very clear. Very similar artefacts to those in UK museums and more than enough to see, including 3 early burials.

'Seniors' are admitted at a lower price, but have to be 67 or over!

“An ok museum”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

Some fairly interesting exhibits but you're not missing much by not going. The history of Iceland is well documented but be prepared for a lot of reading! There are a few video screens, but its mostly artefacts and accompanying signs. There is a small interactive zone for kids, but in they'll probably bore quickly.

This museum really is only for the history buff and at Iceland's prices you're best off saving your dosh if you're not super keen on that.

“Thoughtfully configured exhibits”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2013

I enjoyed my visit to this smaller yet very informative museum. Sure, those larger museums you'll find elsewhere are impressive, but I actually made it through this one without feeling overwhelmed, tired, or dizzy with facts. If you don't mind a slightly longer walk, this wasn't too bad to get to on foot, but there is a decent-sized parking lot if you wish to drive here.

The history of Iceland in the context of the hardiness of the people is laid out for visitors in a contemporary, clean-lined, and aesthetically-appealing building. Lots of interesting historical items are exhibited, including those belonging to pagans, Christians, settlers, and swordsmen. Many of the objects are kept in drawers that you can pull out to view. Both Icelandic and English translations. Overall, I thought the displays were configured very nicely while maintaining a natural flow.

The 2nd floor focuses more on the modern era, but we didn’t spend as much time up here.

There is an interactive room for kids to handle toys and objects.

The museum does not allow jackets and backpacks, but they have a very nice and complementary locker room down the stairs next to the sleek bathrooms. The nice ladies at the front desk gave us all the information we needed.

Glad we visited!

“Good way to spend a couple of hours”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2013

Interesting insight into life for the early settlers and on to today. Just 2 floors and not very big, so it won't take up more than a couple of hours maybe. Multi-language audio tours available. Price very reasonable. Free lockers in the basement so you don't have to lug around your various layers of clothing, waterproofs etc. Not necessarily easy to find - behind the university. Friendly staff.
