Superb museum with a well laid out exhibit floor. The highlight for me was a small collection of Icelandic Christmas trees. I know...

“Must Do This”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2012

Wonderful museum! You can take your time, look at everything, and you won't feel overwhelmed. The displays are arranged chronologically, and it's easy to follow the thread. There is a fun interactive room, where you can wear the outfits of the day or chain mail...and there is a cute 1960's living room with everything you remember -- your Aunt Hilda's tea service!
We walked from our downtown hotel, and it was a lovely stroll.
Highly recommend this small and classy museum.

“Worthwhile visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2012

The museum was well laid out with an impressive number of artefacts dating back to 1000 A.D. and earlier. The main permanent exhibit is a timeline of Iceland's history since settlement. It took us about 2.5 hours to go through. We really enjoyed the multimedia features which were scattered through the display, giving more background into the history of each time period. A lot of the exhibit was focussed on the different religious conversions that occurred in the country in the past 1000 years.

Aside from the main exhibit, there was also another cool exhibit on the famous chess match that occurred in Reykjavik between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky, and a temporary gallery of local photography which were both interesting.

We found a few notes online that this museum has free admission on Wednesdays - we were disappointed to find out upon arrival that this is no longer the case. Even so, the museum was worth the entrance price (1200 kr for adults or 600 kr for post-secondary students). Finally, the food in the cafe was reasonably priced (eg 750 kr for a sandwich).

“Good introduction to Icelandic history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2012

It doesn't take long to go through the permanent exhibition which is set out as a timeline from the settlement of Iceland in 874AD. It has some interesting artefacts and gives an insight into the Icelandic independent spirit.
