“Thorough overview of Icelandic history from ancient to modern times”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2011

A very comprehensive museum covering all periods of Icelandic history, beginning with Viking times and progressing to present day. The displays of historical artifacts were complemented by a few interactive electronic exhibits. Surprisingly the museum was practically empty when we visited on a weekday afternoon. We spent about an hour browsing the 2-floor exhibition though you could probably spend more time studying the displays more closely. Although a bit removed from the most busy area of the commercial City Center, we found it a worthwhile excursion and worth the 1000 kr entrance fee.

“Excellent museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2011

The National Museum of Iceland was founded in 1863 but finally found its home in the specially built building in 1950. A major renovation and technological upgrading was finished in 2004. The permanent exhibition "Making of a Nation - Heritage and History in Iceland" on two floors is like a journey through the last 12 centuries, divided into seven periods, each of them explained on descriptive posters and interactive multimedia displays, accompanied with artifacts and objects. It is interesting, educating and a must for foreign visitors. There was a temporary photo exhibit, too. The ticket price of $10 and that of the food in the cafe is little bit high for budget minded, but probably in line with the cost of everything in the country.

“A great start to your trip to Iceland”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2011

A really well designed museum with a mix of interactive and artefact. A really good way to spend a morning before getting to grips with the rest of Iceland. We did the museum before the golden circle tour and I'm glad we did as we had a better understanding of the history and development of the culture in the country.

“Very informative”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2011

I enjoyed visiting this museum. We visited museums in Oslo and Bergen in Norway and Iceland, and this was the best of the lot. It provided very good insight into the history of Iceland (very very good timeline of events actually), religious changes, clothing and items used back then, and influence of Norway and Copenhagen. I really enjoyed my time here and spent 2 hours although I could have spent more time if the museum weren't closing for the day. Definitely the highlight among museums in my trip.
