“Generally great but request a room at the back if you're a light sleeper!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2013

Stayed at Centerhotel Thingholt for 4 nights mid-December with my brother. I booked two rooms and, having read reviews on here, made an advance request for quiet rooms.

Upon arrival at around 1.30 in the morning (due to a delayed flight!), check-in was straightforward and we were allocated two adjacent rooms at the rear of the hotel, on the second floor. My room was great, but my brother was unhappy with his room because there was noise from machinery/plant on the roof outside (aircon plant perhaps). The hotel was full so they were unable to move him until the following day. The noise from the machinery/plant was barely audible in my room next door, but it was a little louder in his room.

He moved to another room the next day which was on the top (4th) floor at the front of the building. Regrettably on the Friday night noise from a bar across the street in the early hours of the morning woke him up and he was unable to get back to sleep. The hotel receptionist found him another room on the ground floor at the rear of the building, where he stayed for the remainder of our stay.

It seems that Friday and Saturday nights can be troublesome for this hotel given the close proximity of the bar, and the fact that there is a noise problem until as late (or as early!) as 4.00a.m.!

That's the general noise issue dealt with - onto the hotel itself ...!

My room was great. Comfortable bed, plenty of pillows, warm. Tea/coffee in the room, iron and ironing board (although be warned, the ironing board is small and has legs about 8 inches high!!).

Bathroom was great - shower cubicle with excellent shower pressure, with a monsoon/rainfall shower above and a switchable hand shower. I believe some rooms have a bath instead of a shower. Towels were a reasonable size, albeit not quite as thick as I'd like.

Room lighting is a little confusing at first - in fact when I first checked-in I had to go back to reception as I thought my lights weren't working. It transpired that the wall switch by the door is actually a dimmer switch and has to pressed and held for a couple of seconds before the lights actually start to come on. Apparently quite a lot of guests have been caught out by that - perhaps reception should warn people when they check in!

Breakfast was absolutely fine. A reasonable selection of fruit, cheese, smoked salmon and gravadlax. Mini sausages, bacon and scrambled egg (although more like omelettes cut into small pieces!). A good selection of pastries which, based on experience in a lot of other hotels, were very good quality! Cereal, toast, rolls, tea, coffee, juices. More than satisfied with the breakfast offering.

Didn't use the spa, so can't comment. Staff are friendly. TV in the room had a good selection of English channels. Free wi-fi in the room - a bonus!!

In summary - if you're a light sleeper, request a quiet room at the rear of the hotel in advance. I suspect that any room at the front of the building (even on the top floor) will be affected on a Friday or Saturday night by the bar across the street.

Room Tip: Light sleepers should request a room at the rear of the hotel

Just returned from a wonderful short break at Hotel Thingholt. Emailed to request a quiet room when booking and had no problem with noise. Staff were friendly and helpful, the room was very clean and comfortable, the breakfast good in both variety and quantity (cereal, toast, fresh fruit, bacon/eggs/sausage etc, and fresh pastries- i recommend the cinnamon whirl!) and the lounge/bar comfortable, warm and relaxing. Happy hour between 5-7 every night is a good excuse to try a local beer or two at good prices. Also, the location is spot-on for seeing Reykjavik, just off the main street and only a short walk down to the waterfront.
In all, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel based on our experiences here. Hope to come back to Reykjavik and would be very happy to stay here again.

Room Tip: DO ask for a quiet room if you're worried about noise from the club over the road. Just don'...

Stayed there this weekend on a short break. Absolutely fabulous location, walking distance to waterfront, centre, church, and main 'drinking' street. Room was fine, a bit cramped but that was due to the massive sofa, so can't really complain. Bathroom well equipped, breakfast good, reception helpful. Minor quibble would be that our double bed was two singles put together, and the provision of two single duvets, which was a bit odd. Otherwise, recommended!

Friendly helpful staff, clean rooms, lovely breakfast and an ideal central location. Can't really ask for more.
We were able to book several day tours through the hotel as they have links with Iceland Excursions & Reykjavic Excursions which made th the whole process so much easier.

An ideal location for the city, harbour, tours, coach station, shopping and eating out.

Lovely room with safe, stocked refrigerator, excellent wifi and excellent fittings and furnishings.

Superbly comfortable bed, great bathroom and excellent shower.

Good breakfast selection, well equipped gymnasium, small spa with steam room and flotation pool.

Staff enormously helpful and courteous throughout.

This hotel is in the heard of old Reykjavik. It is 10 seconds walk to the main shopping street with loads of places to eat nearby.
When checking in the staff were friendly and efficient which was much needed given we arrived at 1am. The room was a good size, very modern with all facilities expected, the room was on the 2nd floor onto the road but noise was not an issue at all.
The bathroom was brilliant, very modern and the room came with a TV with loads of channels, a mini bar, huge bed and plenty of space to hang out clothes.
We checked out at 3.30am to get our flight and fresh croissants, orange juice, coffee and tea were laid out. A coach was booked from the hotel which was booked for us by reception.
A truly wonderful hotel in a perfect place!

Room Tip: We stayed on the second floor, it was very quiet but I imagine the rest of the rooms were as high a...

Thought I'd write a few tips as everyone else has pretty much covered everything.
We heard no street noise in our room, but we were in a 'dungeon' like room just off the main reception. It did not have windows but a large door out to a concrete courtyard. There was no view. This didn't bother us as we had requested a quiet room, and we literally heard NOTHING. It was room 12 in case you want to book it.
If you smell an eggy smell don't assume it is drains. I think it is the hot water which smells sulphurous. I only smelled it a couple of times.
Tap water for drinking is delicious. Crystal clear and tasting of spring water. I miss it.
Please note, this room is not really a double. It is two single beds pushed together with 2 separate duvets. It is not conducive to romance.( to put it subtly!)
Not much hanging space, no where to put coats.
Don't take many smart clothes to Iceland in Winter, you won't need them! I spent 3 days in walking trousers, thermals, and proper walking boots!
The pavements were slushy and slippery.. Wear stout footwear!( sounding like my mother now, but it's true!)
Buffet breakfast has something to suit everyone, although the eggs were pretty well scrambled. Rock hard!
Put your toast on first as the toaster is slow.
Spa is a non entity. Don't bother going in there if you have to pay extra.
Particular mention must go to Clara on reception. She is charming and helpful.
Would I come here again? Yes.
