“Really good location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2013

Stayed here for the weekend. Really well located within easy walk of all the main city attractions. Rooms were clean and comfortable, breakfast was really good, with a wide and varied choice available. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful and were only to willing to offer advice and information. A party of 8 adults and we would certainly use this hotel again as a base for exploring Iceland and Reykjavick.

Just returned from Iceland and stayed here 5 days (9-14 Oct) and all in all found the Baron well suited to our needs.
Rooms were adequate in size and beds were comfortable but would have liked to have had some drawers in which to store our clothes though at least there was a wardrobe. Is it the norm in Scandinavian countries to have no drawers?
Bathroom was okay though very little shelf space and if you are travelling with your other (female) half you find no room to place your (male) accessories other than in your wash bag.
Also in our room the sink was rather small and if you were not careful you could bang your head on the small shelf over it.
The liquid soap dispenser seemed like a recent addition and was badly placed so you got soap on the toilet roll and also on the floor.
Breakfast was adequate though I would have liked to have some smoked salmon and a variation of the (2) hot selections along with soft boiled eggs would have been nice along with a more efficient toaster.
The self serve buffet room was a bit on the small side so quickly got congested since a lot of people were booked on the tours which all pick up around 08:30.
We found the staff all very helpful and the location of the hotel very convenient and would happily stay there again.

Room Tip: It's worth paying a supplement for rooms with a sea view. A word of caution - beware the wooden...

The hotel is in a great location, close to the city centre and with sea views from some of the higher floors. Unlike some of the more modern, larger hotels, most of the interesting parts of Reykjavik are within easy walking distance. Not the biggest rooms, but adequate. The staff were friendly and keen to help with any enquiries. TV reception in the room was limited.

Room Tip: Room 502 has good sea views.

The hotel was near the waterfront and a couple of minutes from the main high street, about 20 mins walk from the harbour. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room itself was very basic in all aspects but was clean and warm. The breakfast was decent but the serving area very cramped. As we didn't spend much time in the room, it wasn't much of a problem.

The hotel is OK. We had several elevator issues, so stairs were a saver bet. But besides that, the bed slept good, the room had coffee/tea facilities. Internet in the room was paid, however at reception area it was free (though limited capacity so during breakfast it would give login error maximum capacity reached).
My shower had issues getting water away through the drain, complaining improved the situation.
TV had small choice but with BBC Entertainment I was lucky on the arrival to catch a rerun of Top Gear.

Room Tip: There are lots of differences, even on the same floor, it seems they renovate whatever is broken, so...

My family and I enjoyed a six-night stay at the Fosshotel Baron during our recent visit to Iceland. I could not have picked a better location as our base for exploring the city and beyond! The property is located just one street over from both Laugavegur (the main shopping street) and the Harbor, making it an ideal starting place for a walk to several main attractions. Just outside the hotel is an Aktu Taktu, a quick service restaurant that is open until 1 am or later, which is a real help after long day tours in a city that shuts everything but the bars down pretty early. There is also a 10-11, a small convenience store, open 24/7 right up the street.

The hotel lodgings were quite comfortable while still being very European. The dining area had a sleek, contemporary vibe, and the breakfast buffet offered a waffle maker and coffee/espresso machine alongside standard European breakfast meats and baked goods. (My sisters really enjoyed the cookies.) The hotel had a small elevator, but at least it had one. The doors use an old-school key system, so you have to turn in your room key prior to leaving the hotel. The rooms were fairly basic, but comfortable, and always warm after a cold day out in the elements. In true European style, the showers were abominably small, except in the suites, but the geothermally heated water was always hot enough, even if it did had a distinctive sulfur smell. While the walls seemed a bit thin and allowed you to hear hallway activity, the hotel and its guests seemed fairly quiet. Even with a window open to the outside, the hotel was not subject to too much city clamor.

My only disappointment was that the WiFi was not free. In an increasingly connected world, offering free internet access would have been nice. The WiFi packages they offer run about $35 for 5 days, and are able to be shared among multiple users, with the limitation of one device at a time. I've definitely seen worse charges, so it may be worth your while to invest in that, or use the free WiFi at the many coffee shops and bookstores that offer it.

All in all, I was pleased with our stay, and would consider staying at the Fosshotel Baron again for its comfort and convenience.

Room Tip: Room #303 at the end of the hall offers a large, deep bathtub; kitchenette with microwave, mini frid...

This hotel is good value for money in a prime location for seeing the city. Sea view and on the main tourist route for a walk around town. Buy your beer at the duty free at the airport after baggage control as it is expensive and hard to obtain after 6pm as the liquor store closes and then you will have to pay the high price in restaurants and bars. Take advantage of the happy hour at hotel were a pint is cheaper than half ? (I know weird). No complaints about this hotel except that one of the male receptionist in the evening was not as customer friendly as female receptionists in the day.
