“Stylish, good location, overpriced”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2014

This hotel bills itself as a luxury property, and certainly it is priced that way. We enjoyed our stay, but not sure it was worth the price. Our room overlooked the dry dock of the harbor. It was very interesting to watch work on the ships. The downside is that right under our window was a shelter where all the smokers visiting the popular hotel bar would congregate to smoke and were very loud, so between the smoke and noise we couldn't open the windows at night and sleeping not so great. The room was not cleaned until well after 3PM each day; once we had to go to the desk at 4PM and ask. Breakfast was great, but VERY expensive. No coffee/tea maker in the room; you are supposed to buy it in the lobby. Internet pricy, so we just used our phones. Free parking, but in a muddy, potholed lot about a half-block away. So overall, a mixed experience. We stayed in several other Reykjavik hotels during our trip (between forays to other parts of Iceland), and all were a better value than this one.

Dear traveler,

First of all we would like to apologize for any inconvenience you experienced during your stay, which was caused by the smoker’s shelter. We will make sure to forward your complaint to the general manager who will take necessary actions to prevent this from happening to future guests.

Regarding the cleaning of the room, we nearly always get positive feedback about the cleanliness of the hotel so this really is a surprise to us. Nevertheless we thank you for notifying us so that we can look further into this matter.
You are correct about the coffee/tea facilities, we don´t have them up in the guest rooms since our goal is to encourage our guests to go down to the Slippbarinn (bar & restaurant) and mingle with other guests and the locals as well. That way we are able to sustain the enjoyable atmosphere throughout the hotel.

We are glad that you liked your stay overall but we are really sorry that you experienced our hotel to be of a less value than other hotels in Iceland. We however hope that you will give us another chance if you visit Reykjavik in the near future, since we are convinced that you can and will experience our hotel in a much more positive way.

Best wishes,
Icelandair Hotels guest relations team

Sometimes you just happen to be in the wrong spot! Landing early, no room, come back at 2. Only one room left, paid for a deluxe 2 bed, looking at harbor. We were shown a closet! (4' x 20') A small double bed where you had to squeeze into either size (2 girls traveling), no coffee nor refrigerator, pile driver running from 8am until 5 pm including Saturday outside the window. Shower wet the entire bathroom, room not cleaned by 4:30 in the afternoon.
"Oh, we didn't know you had paid for a deluxe room, maybe into two days we can move you". "Oh, you want wifi?", "Oh you want to know when breakfast will be served?" However, the breakfast was lovely and tasted good. At night the bar and restaurant seem to be enjoyed by the community. I would recommend that no one stay in this hotel and that staff be sent to hotel management training. A total joke!

Room Tip: Harbor view only. Otherwise very loud road noise.

Dear traveler,

We would like to apologize for all the misunderstanding and the bad communications you experienced during your stay. The way you experienced our hotel, according to your review at least, is definitely not in line with our usual standards. We will make sure to pass your whole review to the general manager who surely will take some actions to prevent this from happening again.

At this time, the only thing that we can do is to offer you our sincere apologies.

Best wishes,

Honestly, this review is a little harsh. Not everything about this hotel is utter crap. The rooms are fine. The location is good. The breakfast was great. But honestly, my biggest regret was wearing a shirt and shoes, as compared to what we did get, I would choose no service.

During our stay, we had to repeatedly get new keys, had valuables go "missing" from our rooms - only to "reappear" in their staff rooms, and had to be shuffled around several rooms.

Don't stay here.

Dear guest,

We apologize for the inconvenience you experienced during your stay with us. When we upgraded you there was a failure in our system resulting in the key issue you experienced and we are very sorry about that. Regarding the valuables that went missing from your room, our maids actually made a mistake when they thought that those valuables belonged to the guest that was previously in your room. Again this had to do with the reason that you were upgraded to another room and our maids unfortunately were not aware of that, thus made this mistake. Again we would like to apologies for that.

We would however like to thank you for your review and the kind words about our rooms, the location and our breakfast buffet. We hope that you will forgive us for our mistakes and we would be really grateful if you would give us another chance to prove to you that we can deliver a much better service than you experienced.

Best wishes,
Trausti Karlsson

We stayed in this Hotel for 4 nights,Breakfast was not included but we ate it anyway! The Breakfast was good but the price was not I think for a 4 nite stay it should have been included!! The bar is very popular with the locals and is very very busy!!The staff is very helpful and friendly. Our glasses in the room were left dirty for 2 days and the floor was only swept on the 3rd day! We would not stay in this hotel again!!

Dear guest,

We apologize for your room not being cleaned efficiently enough. Usually we are praised for our cleanliness so this is really surprising. We will nevertheless make sure to forward your complaint to the general manager who will look into this matter to make sure that it does not happen again. Regarding the breakfast we always charge it separately but we actually offer a discount for those who book breakfast in advance on our website.

We would like to thank you for praising our staff; we will make sure to pass your compliments on to them. We also hope that you will reconsider about not wanting to stay with us again as we are sure that you can experience our hotel in a much more positive way.

Best wishes,

We landed early in Iceland and were exhausted of course since we were flying from the US. We arrived at the hotel at 9am which was 3 hours before check in. They were kind enough to go ahead and let us check in to our room. Much appreciated!

Room Tip: A room on a higher floor probably has a little less street noise. It wasn't super noisy but if...

We had a lovely, but small double room on the 4th floor overlooking the ship repair slipways. Other people mightn't like this but we loved it. How often do you get a close up view of ships undergoing repair/refurbishment? We were there on a Saturday and Sunday night and found it was very quiet and peaceful.
Our room had a little balcony which in keeping with the quirky nautical decor, had one of those orange ship's life rings attached to the railing. Both the door and a window open onto the balcony and there is a little bench for sitting on and admiring the view when it isn't raining.
The room had the usual Icelandic double which is two single beds put together. The room had excellent lighting, 2 bedside tables each with its own lamp, a suitcase table, a usefully sized counter above which are several power points and a USB charger port and an enormous flat screen TV which we had trouble making work. NB to start TV in Iceland you usually have to press 1. Mind you we have found in Iceland that our days are so full that we don't want to waste time watching TV.
There is free wifi in the hotel but this might just be a trial. Ask reception how to access it as it is slightly different to the other hotels with free wifi.
The room also had a bar stool and an armchair. The bathroom had a hair dryer, tissues and lovely smelling pump pack soap and pump pack shampoo. The bathroom is unusual in that it doesn't open from the passageway from the door but from the room itself. The door and the wall facing the room are of frosted glass and even though I have read some people don't like this, we did rather like it. Mind you if we were 2 singles sharing a room we wouldn't have felt the same way.
The staff at reception were about the friendliest we have come across in Iceland. The breakfast (ours was included) was equal to the best we have had in Iceland. There was a range of hot food too including a delicious mushroom mix and a potato and bacon mix. For those of us who have horribly early flights you can select a range of items from the open fridge beside reception. Our shuttle bus was at 4 am and we were to help ourselves to Skyr (delicious Icelandic joghurt, although this was the low sugar variety which isn't as good as the usual Skyr), sandwiches, long life juice in popper-style packs, and hot drinks from a machine. Just make sure you eat the Skyr and drink the juice before you go through the scanners at Keflavik airport!
The hotel is about 3 minutes walk from the Vikin Maritime Museum (if you are interested see my review on this) and maybe 10 minutes from the 871 +/-2 Settlement Museum (see my review on this too if you are interested). I'd recommend a visit to both if you are interested in history and culture. It is maybe a little bit over 5 minutes to the main shopping area for tourists. We thought the hotel's location very convenient.
I can't comment on value for money as I don't know how much the hotel cost.

Room Tip: We were very happy with room 404 for a Saturday and Sunday night as it is very quiet. It is on the t...

Construction noise was deafening. The hotel should not have been open or at the very least one should have been warned in advance and been offered steeply discounted rooms. Parking was off-site, if one could find it on the street. On the positive side, the staff was very friendly and the breakfast was excellent (though not inexpensive, it was worth it ).

Dear traveler,
thank you for your feedback and thanks for mentioning our friendly staff and excellent breakfast, we really appreciate it.

We are sincerely sorry about your experience with the noise from the constructions. We know that when most of the ground work was going on, it was noisy, and we truly apologize for that disturbance. At the moment the Reykjavik Marina is undergoing an extensive enlargement and unfortunately that can be disturbing for our guests.

Now, most of the ground work, which has been causing most of the noise, is completed, so there will be much less noise and disturbance from now on, but 60 new rooms will open in a new building in spring 2015.

Our best,
Erla
