“Perfect stay in Reykjavik”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2007

Stayed here for 2 days at the beginning and one day at the end of our holiday with2 days at Budir in-between.
The spereior rooms on the top floors are excellent and spacious with good views over the city. Breakfast is substantail with loads of choice, you wopuldn't get bored just have a different selection each day.
The main places of interest are within easy reach including the shops and the art deco pool and hot tubs of Reykjaviks only indoor pool are 10 mins walk away.
There is some street noise on Friday/Saturday night and parking is a matter of luck .

Reykjavik is great, but this hotel made our trip even better! The staff are wonderful and very very helpful, the breakfast is great, and the deluxe room is perfection! Everything is very clean and comforting. It is a home away from home.

Enjoyed our stay at the Odinsve hotel. Nice place but not fancy. The room was a duplex, with a sitting room and tv upstairs. Bed was big and had nice linens. Bathroom was small and cramped but we found that everywhere we stayed in Iceland. Location is top notch. Very clean. Close enough to the main drag but far enough away from the bars. YOU DO NOT want to stay anywhere near Laugavegur Street on a Friday or Saturday night because the bars are open to 7am and the streets are filled with yelling drunks and the sounds of breaking glass. Odinsve was far enough away that this didn't bother us. The breakfast buffet is good enough but by the third day you may get a little bored of it. However, given how expensive restaurants are it is welcome. Would stay there again.

Excellent smaller hotel perfectly located in a quiet residential neighborhood with walking distance from popular restaurants, shops, cultural sights and tourist center. The hotel is very modern, clean and very tastefully decorated in Scandinavian style. The staff at the front desk was very polite and helpful and had loads of information regarding sightseeing and different day trips. The rooms were comfortable and contemporary. We had breakfast included in our price for the room and the selection of food was tasty and healthy. Can definitely recommend to friends. However, remember that in Iceland you pay per person and not per room.

Room: We stayed in a double deluxe room for two nights – a Fri and Sat night. The room was fairly basic and a bit small – but it’s workable. It was very quiet both during the day and nights which was very nice considering we were there Fri and Sat and how many other hotels suffer from the weekend partying. We stayed at Hotel Borg (downtown) after this and even had nightclub noise all night on a Monday.

Bathroom: Quite small but again workable. There is very little counter space – just a ledge over the toilet (which is next to the sink). The mirror was a cabinet that opened and held glasses and such in addition to the ledge. The shower was OK but hard not to spray water all over the floor. It did stay nice and warm in there if we kept the door closed.

Location: Very good. Distinctly quieter than “downtown” but still very near the main areas. Reykjavik is quite small and easy to walk around. The furthest restaurants in town might be 15 minutes walk and plenty of others closer. Main shopping street less than 5 minutes walk.

Staff/service – very nice. Helpful and courteous. Note that there is no staff to help with luggage – you lug it to/from your room yourself. This was true at Hotel Borg as well which we stayed at just after.

Breakfast: Surprisingly good for just a cold buffet. I like my protein so cold buffets often disappoint but I liked this one. They had peeled hard-boiled eggs (and a slicer), soft-boiled eggs, breakfast meats, smoked salmon, boiled tiny shrimp (yummy), and of course cheeses and yoghurt. The bakery, juice, fruit and cereal selections were nice (my wife eats all that stuff and she liked it).

Dinner on site: Siggi Hall – just fantastic. Ate there twice. Highly recommended.

We spent two nights at the Odinsve, the room was modern style and big enough for us. Don't expect boutique hotel charm but everything is nice enough. The bathroom however was tiny, just a shower cubicle, sink and toilet (which you had to sit a bit sideways on as your leg got near the radiator!). The shower was great though and our first experience of the icelandic sulphurous water. Also provided was a TV (some english channels), tea and coffee making facility and mini bar. The reception staff were always helpful and polite.

The Hotel is ideally placed for exploring Reykjavik, just a few streets away from shops, restaurants, bars, museums, etc.
The room was fairly quiet, although we stayed mid-week we're told Reykjavik can get rowdy at the weekend.

The restaurant, 'SIggi Hall' is run by a famous icelandic TV chef of the same name. Hotel guests get a 15% discount of everything on the menu which brings the price down to merely extremely expensive. Take out a second mortgage for the wine list. That said the food was fantastic, about the best we had in Iceland. If you're planning on treating yourself definitely eat here once, but if you're travelling elsewhere in Iceland also take the opportunity to eat out because you won't find many restaurants outside of the hotel once you leave Reykjavik.

  • Disliked — Tiny bathroom

Although we would agree with the mostly positive reviews of this hotel – convenient position, friendly staff etc., we would point out that our stay was marred by noise on the Friday and Saturday nights from groups of people shouting well beyond midnight. There was also party music near the hotel extending all night on the Saturday.

The young people congregating near the hotel were possibly those returning or passing through the area from the nightclub part of town. However, we believe that this could be a common problem on Fridays and Saturdays, so, although it is obviously not the hotel’s fault, we would not fully agree that the location is in a quiet part of the city.

We were also surprised that no action had been taken to repair a blind by checkout time after reporting it two days earlier, nor to remove the glass full of cigarette stubs left out on the balcony.
We would have felt that at IKR 30900 per night this sort of service could have been improved.
