“Really clean!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

We really enjoyed our stay here! It was so clean and well organised. Staff were really nice and helpful (except for one guy who really didn't seem like he wanted to be there or help anyone). Our only problems were the fact that there were no sheets on the beds! It should be a basic right of staying in a hostel or hotel, right? You could "rent" them, however. We didn't understand why to rent a bike at the hostel cost more than a room! Help tourists out! We are helping the environment by choosing a bike! I think that the hostel shouldn't try and make such a hefty profit from renting bikes. It's such a pleasant way to see Reykjavik!
I have seen a lot of reviews saying the hostel is far from the city centre( this is where a bike comes in handy). But it's really
NOT that far and it's so easy to get to the city centre from the hostel. The hostel service an cleanliness was fantastic overall, don't get me wrong! And we had a wonderful stay!! Thank you!!!

Dear Louise,

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. We are happy that you enjoyed your stay and thank you for your nice words about our staff and the hostel in general.
The reason we don't supply linen unless rented is simply to keep costs at a minimum for travelers, and in a way, partly to fulfill our mission to be eco-friendly. People that bring their own sleeping bag have no need for a sheet and thus they don't have to pay for one and we do not have to wash it afterwards- maybe unused.
Thank you for pointing out the rental bike service. We do not run this service ourselves and it is merely though as a service for our guests. I will look in to how we can amend this service in the future.

We would love to welcome you back to Iceland.

Although not as central as you might expect from the "city" in the title, this hostel was comfortable, with good facilities. The staff were very friendly and happy to help, and we were particularly impressed by the common room area and kitchens. The rooms are basic, but clean and have everything you need. We also stayed at the campsite for one night, which was spacious and also had good facilities.

I stayed in the campsite behind the hostel for 7 nights and I had a fantastic time there and in Iceland in general. The campsite is large and spacious and I had no trouble finding a good pitch. The facilities are very good with warm showers and loos, had dryers etc all in good condition and clean. The shower rooms themselves are heated which was a nice touch. Free wifi is available as well as a cooking area if you need it. It is a little far from the main parts of the city but buses can be used right outside the site.

The main point I would make about the campsite was the helpfullness and quality of the staff that work there. Throughout my stay the staff were fantastic, very friendly and helpfull. They are also there almost 24 hours a day (just a short break in the evenings), the first time I have seen this on a campsite. The staff helped me with everything from travel questions to booking trips to weather enquiries to renting bikes. Thank you to all the Reykjavik Campsite staff, you were great!

We had the 4 person room but I don't know why there were 5 people. Very good localization. International companion (Spain, Venezuela, Germany, Nigeria, etc). 3 kitchens to choose. Really cheap according to icelandic proces :)

Just coming to the end of a four day stay here. Will definitely be back but next time with the family. The four person rooms are very good by hostel standards with en suite. Prices are reasonable compared to out of town hotels. There is a decent bus service to get you into town and back and it's a 40 minute stagger back of an evening. Very handy for local pool and the botanics. Keep up the good work, and see you soon.

Dear guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay. We agree that our location is excellent for those that want to enjoy a splash in Iceland's largest pool, and for those that want to stay in the greener part of the city, albeit a little from the center.

Thank you for your stay and we would love to welcome you back.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

We stayed here for three nights in a 4-bed dorm in April 2013. We were the only two people in our dorm during the stay, so it was like having a private room. It was very cold outside, but the room heated up nicely and kept us comfortable.

We cooked our evening meal in the kitchen on two occasions and it was very well equipped with all the utensils we needed and there was plenty of space in there.

The hostel staff were very friendly and helpful, especially with booking excursions and airport bus pick-ups.

The hostel is a bit outside the centre but we walked every time we wanted to go there and back. It took us about 30 minutes to get to the near side of the centre and 45 minutes to get to the harbour. The swimming baths next door to the hostel are great.

The only issue in the room was that the shower didn't drain very quickly so that the bathroom floor was covered with a couple of centimeters of water for about half an hour after each shower.

Dear guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. And thanks for your kind words towards our hard working staff. We are a hostel that is made by travelers for travelers and all of our staff members have a passion for travelling and know how it is to be on the other side of the counter.

Thank you as well for reporting the clogged shower drain, we have fixed that. It is vital for us to get input from our customers to know what we can do better.

Thank you for your stay and we would love to welcome you back.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2013 via mobile

This hostel was cheap and provided a large room for our family of four with our own bathroom for about £50 per night so great value. However, the place is full of school children which is fine but they do take over the breakfast area and lounge areas in the evening. The kitchens were not particularly well stocked. Only one teaspoon in the kitchen we used but tons of cups, plates and other cutlery and good sharp knives which other hostels sometimes don't provide. The beds were comfortable, the pillows awful so take your own. Each bunk has its own light and a locker which can be used with your own paclock to store valuables.

Good things - place was clean, modern, great location if you have your own car. Pool next door is brilliant and view out over the park is beautiful. Wifi access is pretty good everywhere but was intermittent and we guessed this was perhaps due to volume of traffic or another guest downloading films.

Bad things - breakfast really not worth the cost. Get your own bread and yoghurt and avoid the expense of this cold and scarce breakfast. The coffee ran out completely and staff were not bothered about keeping things replenished. The staff were generally not as welcoming as at the other hostels we stayed in apart from the night guy who was really helpful when our hire car broke down as we needed to drive to the airport at 5am! Not good start to our journey home.

Firedoors to each room are heavy and our 9 year old daughter couldn't open them by herself and got stuck in the room which was a bit scary for her. Luckily we were on the ground floor so we were able to get her to pass the key out to us to unlock her.

So all in all the hostel is value for money but bring your own pillow, swimming costume for pool next door and breakfast and you can't go far wrong.

Oh and bring a padlock for your valuables. On our last day we returned back to the room and found the door open when we know we had been careful to close it each time we left it. Maybe the cleaner had not closed it properly but although nothing had gone it was worrying that our room had been open all day.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are glad that your stay was satisfactory considering all matters. We are the only hostel in the city with three guest kitchens and we try to make them as well stocked as possible, thank you for pointing out the lack of tea spoons - we will take care of that immediately. In general, we thank you for your assessment it will help us improve, we have already started changing out the pillows in all rooms so there is no need to bring your own in the future.
