“Chill Out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2009

My wife and I stayed in the Cabin Hotel as part of an Iceland Air weekend package. Having previously read the reviews regarding the small size of the standard rooms we opted for an upgrade to a Deluxe room with a sea view which we arranged with the hotel before leaving. A little more expensive than I would have liked but very happy with our allocation. Overall we found the hotel clean, functional and friendly and close enough to Reykjavik. In fact our stroll along the waterfront to the City on a snowy Saturday morning was very enjoyable and invigorating.

Breakfast in the hotel was adequate and typically 'continental'. We found it absolutely fine and particularly enjoyed the fresh fruit available. We had no problems getting seats or queuing probably because of the time of year. The evening meals are a light buffet but the food was fresh and, after days out on tours, met our needs.

Took the Northern Lights tour as part of our package on Saturday evening and we were delighted to have clear skies and did manage to catch a glimpse although not what I would call a good show. The four large coaches of people descending on the same site did take some of the 'magic' away we felt.

Again having read some of the reviews before departing we decided to privately book a small coach for our Golden Circle tour on Sunday. We spotted a leaflet for Iceland Horizon in the hotel foyer and the hotel were happy to arrange the booking for us. The coach was a small 16 seater (mind you only 6 of us on it) and David the driver was great. Full commentary throughout the tour, very knowledgable on Icelandiic history, culture and geology a great personal service, no crowds and cheaper than most. Our visit to the Pingvellir National Park just as the sun was starting to set was an absolutely breathtaking experience. We were lucky enough to have a crisp, sunny day so not so sure what it would have been like if it was overcast and raining!

On our final day we took our return Flybus to the airport and checked our bags in early giving us the whole afternoon to visit the Blue Lagoon. We took a taxi from the airport (around ISK 4500) and decided to treat ourselves to a private room. Rather expensive, but what the heck, you only live once! This was truly relaxing with fresh fruit, tea, coffee, chocolates and of course our private entry to the pool area. Even had lunch served to us with a glass of red wine ....... bliss!! Got a taxi back to the airport but as we'd already checked in we could stay longer and enjoy an almost empty pool when the coaches had left.

Overall a very relaxing and memorable trip, stunning landscapes, friendly people, excellent flights, a reall chill out experience.

Cabin hotel is a cheap hotel with clean rooms and ok buffet breakfast included in the price. The hotel is located in a business / industry area about 20 min walk from the town centre.

The good thing about the location is that it is rather close to Reyjkavik's biggest indoor/ourdoor pool & hot pot swimming pool called Laugardalur (cheap, excellent, beautiful). There is also nice path from the hotel to the town centre if you just follow the sea shore.

For shopping the hotel is a bit far (taxi to the town centre 1000-1500 islandic krona) but all tours will pick you up from the hotel.

The hotel room was small and lacked any special characteristics but the room (incl. bathroom) was very clean.
The staff was helpful and friendly.

Stayed here for 3 nights in early January. Booked via Iceland Air and they offer the 'standard' room - this room is several notches down from my university halls of residence! The room is best described as a broom cupboard with two tiny single beds in it! We therefore decided to upgrade to the 'deluxe' room at a cost of £30 per night. This room was clean and slightly larger than the standard room but still very basic and worse than a Travelodge. The room though only had 2 single beds and there are no double sheets in the whole hotel to help put them together to make a double.

The breakfast in VERY basic and somewhat odd even by continental style breakfasts! Lots of chopped tomatoes and cucumber etc with some meats, cheese and bread rolls.

The location of the hotel was very convenient and easy to get cabs into town although taxis are not cheap (about £8 for the 5 min taxi fare).

The staff in the hotel are excellent and are the thing that stopped me giving it a one star! They can book trips all hours of the day and are really helpful.

Very cheap hotel but avoid and book another, especially if you are going with Iceland Air as the extra you will pay for the other hotel options will be well worth it.

Other general points:- the blue lagoon and the golden circle are must-dos and if you want to try riding an Icelandic Horse, Laxnes Farm was excellent but wear the wellies and overalls they supply as they take the horses through the streams!

We stayed at Hotel Cabin for 3 nights as part of an Icelandair break to Reykjavik. Having read the earlier reviews of those who upgraded to the bigger rooms we were all set to do this on our arrival but in the end we decided to stick with the Twin Room.

The room was very small and basic and included only two small single beds, a table, a wardrobe, a chair and the en-suite, but for our needs was absolutely fine as we were to spend hardly any time there. The room was clean, new towels were provided every day and the hotel staff were accommodating, friendly and helpful. The buffet breakfast included in our stay was also a bonus, enabling us to fill up before each day’s tours/trips.

The location was good, it’s about a 15 minute walk to reach the main street of Laugavegur which is the main shopping street leading into the heart of the city centre. There is a bus stop outside the hotel with services into the city but we walked along Borgatun/along the seafront each time we went out, which was fine despite the rain!

Once you hit Laugavegur there are lots of restaurants/bars to choose from. We enjoyed two excellent meals at Carpe Diem (Rauoararstigur 18) and Restaurant Reykjavik (Vesturgate 2), at the latter there is an Ice Bar where you can take a drink in a room made of ice which was a unique experience!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hotel Cabin and our time in Reyjavil, a great trip!

The hotel rooms are quite small but choose the deluxe rooms as they are a reasonable size. The hotel staff were really friendly & helpful. Lots of info at reception on what to do and see. Breakfast was basic, cold meats, cheeses, bread, rolls, cereals, etc but sufficient. The shower in the room was excellent although the drain was under the sink and the floor kept being flooded!

Across the road was a petrol station with a Subway so you'll never go hungry and its cheaper than eating in restaurants everyday. There is a 24/7 convenience store close by to the hotel too.

The hotel is in a good location, 10-15 mins from the centre of Reykjavik, 15-20 mins from the shopping centre Kringlan and stunning views of the bay from the window of the hotel room (if facing front of hotel).

I booked a couple of tours online before we went to Iceland. One I would really recommend is the Mountaineers of Iceland: Pearl Tour - Golden Circle Super Jeep/Truck Tour (www.mountaineers.is). It was a tour in a monster truck of the Golden Circle with snowmobiling in the afternoon. It was fantastic. I would also recommend the tour South Shore Adventure and also visit the The Pearl (Perlan) which is a revolving restaurant from which you can see the whole city.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Cabin hotel and in Iceland as a whole & would definetly go back!

Great location, views out over the bay and only a ten minute walk into centre. Comfortable and clean with really freindly and helpful staff. The rooms are quite small but there are open lounge areas on each floor which are great if you are in a group. The showers were really good and the salad bar breakfast was spot on.
We were a group of ten staying over new year and none of us had any compliants. Overall a great place to stay.

Stayed here for 3 nights in Dec 08. The standard rooms are INCREDIBLY small. But the beds are comfortable and everything is clean. The breakfast included is basic but again, does the trick. They have wireless throughout the hotel, but it is very expensive. Pretty close to town, only 2 stops on the bus, about a 10min walk...
