“Over priced but good location (if you like that sort of thing)”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013

The hotel is not 4 star...it´s more like a 2/3 and quite dated. If you go on a weekend expect to be awake until 5am from the bars on the street! Initially we were given a room opposite the 24 hour reception but after complaining we were kindly moved to the top of the building on the side away from the road. Even with ear plugs in I could hear the sound of the music although it wasn´t too bad to prevent us sleeping from up there. The room was cleaned every day but I found tomato sauce stains on my actual pillow and make-up stain on the clean towel but these were quickly replaced without issue. The breakfast was OK (fruit, toast, hard boiled egg, yoghurt and cereal only) but could get boring after a couple of days. The location of the hotel was on the main street with plenty of restaurants and shops on the same street. Don´t go to Reykjavik expecting a nice city break.....once you´ve seen the Geysir, the waterfall, the Blue Lagoon and the pleasant and unusual scenery there is nothing else!! If you like hiking and outdoor activities then this is a good holiday (and a good base) for you but don´t go in winter!!! There is not much to do if the weather is bad. The restaurants are all over priced and poor quality....sorry for the harsh review but we didn´t really enjoy our stay there.

Room Tip: Our room was 411 and i´m told it was the quietest in the building.

We loved the Skjaldbreid hotel. It has a great location - walking distance to all great places anyone would like to see in Reykjavik. The room was very clean and the bed very comfy. I found the staff helpful and nice. You could hear the city-noise on Friday and Saturday night, but it didn't interrupt our sleep. Breakfast was every day the same, but we liked it a lot. I would highly recommend this place, and would definitely stay there again.

We loved our stay at Skjalbreid. The staff were always incredibly helpful, they will help book tours, provide advice on good restaurants, and are overall very friendly. The rooms were the perfect size, cozy. The bed was very comfortable (almost too comfortable! with our jetlag, we slept through our alarm the first day). You only get about 3 channels on TV, but they are English language, and why do you want to watch TV anyway! They offer a service that calls you if the Northern Lights are visible over the city, we used this and were able to see them our second night there! The breakfast offers a variety of choices: cereal, pickled herring, pastries, smoked meats and cheese, fruit. We always started our day full and happy. The location is ideal, right on the main shopping strip, and within walking distance to everything you want to see in 101 Reykjavik.

Great location, only stayed the one night. Perfect for going out on the town by foot.
The room was dated and was spoilt by smelling of cigarettes. Basic functionality gave value for money.
Checking in I thought that I had caught the reception on an off day he was surprisingly dismissive bordering on rudeness.
Checking out was busy and a different chap wasn't bothered about a receipt and suggested that I print one out from the website where I had booked the room.
We wouldn't bother staying here again with the vast array of choice in the area.

You could not ask for a better location for this place. It is right in the centre of Reykjavick (be aware of the noise on the weekend though).
The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and were always keen for a chat and booked our trips for us. Breakfast was not bad, normal cereal, bread cheese etc.
I would defintely stay here again as it was really cheap and good value for money.

We recently stayed for 4 nights at this hotel.

The location is great, just off the main street so it is easy too find. It is close to the centre of the city and allows you to walk to all the most interesting sites in Reykjavik. If you go down the hill into the centre you can find a good 24 hour supermarket as well as plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars. The food selection in Iceland is excellent. In regards to prices, it is a little more expensive than the UK but what do you expect in the city. My husband has lived in Switzerland and said that Iceland was much better value for money.

The room was cosy and just big enough for the two of us. It was warm and clean and the bed was comfortable . There is a mini bar (unsurprisingly overpriced), hairdryer, an iron etc. I wouldn't give the hotel a 5* as our room was right next to the stairs which was pretty noisy when people were coming and going (Don't forget the earplugs). The shower was tiny which made showering a little difficult. The carpet could also do with being replaced as it was showing signs of wear.

On the plus side, the reception staff were very friendly and helpful, offering to book up trips, restaurants and confirm bookings for excusions etc. They were on hand 24 hours per day. The breakfast was very good, often checked and replenished and offered a good selection for continental style breakfast.

Overall I would recommend this hotel, although maybe a different room. We did not stay over the weekend so I cannot comment about what it is like when it is more busy and noisy.

A very nice hotel. Located in the city center. Despite being located on the main street in the room can not hear the noise. Room not very big but it has everything you need.

Staff - the highest class. An efficient and fast. What is important very helpful. Thanks to them we came to a great restaurant "Seafood Grill".

Very nice idea to open breakfast room up to 21:00 with hot water, coffee, tea, and even honey. In the cold days very useful idea despite the fact that the room was a kettle.

Greetings to all staff. Takk :-)
