We booked a private tour to the Golden Circle in February 2013 for our family of four.
The Discovery Iceland website is very good but I did have to email them several times to enable me to book a private tour, Georg replied promptly to all my queries and was very helpful.
We were picked up promptly from our hotel by our driver for the day, who was called Kiddi. He was very friendly and informative and even stopped off during the tour to buy us some Icelandic yoghurt, Skyr, to sample together with some dried fish flakes!
When we got to the main tourist spots of Þingvellir, Gulfoss, Geysir we were left to our own devices to explore at our leisure, which was good as we never felt rushed. Kiddi also managed to get us to all the tourist spots just before all the big coaches arrived, so it was never busy at any of these locations and we were able to take lots of photos.
We mentioned to Kiddi that we liked the Icelandic horses, so he stopped off at the side of the road so we could stroke some horses in a field, which my daughters enjoyed! Kiddi was very helpful and always checked what we were interested in and if there was anything else we wanted to see.
We had an early lunch at Gulfoss, which was unlimited soup and bread rolls which is included in the cost of the trip. We had asparagus soup as we are vegetarians, but there is lamb soup for meat eaters.
But by far the most enjoyable part of the day was when we went off road in the jeep and onto the glacier. On the way to the glacier, Kiddi drove off road and through a river covered in ice, which was very exciting! We were so lucky as it was a gorgeous sunny day so we were able to drive a long way onto the glacier, and the views were just amazing. The scenery was stunning, a beautiful snowy landscape and it felt like we were in the middle of nowhere. Our daughters had great fun rolling down the snowy hills and making snow angels!
Kiddi was an incredibly safe driver though and never took any risks, making sure he only followed tracks that were already there. He drove up a snowy mountain and back down again which was scary but fun!
On the way back we stopped off at Kerid, a volcanic crater which was very impressive. Kiddi was keen to show us some more stops but we ran out of time, so instead we had a quick drive up to a geothermal power plant and then drove home past some beautiful scenery.
Overall we had a great day out and we especially enjoyed the off roading on the glacier, which was a highlight!
