On one of our last days in Iceland my husband I took the superjeep tour of Thorsmork. We had been debating whether to go on this tour because the price is very high (about $285/person) but at the end of the day we decided to splurge.
Positives first: the Thormsmork area is absolutely gorgeous. You will see glaciers, cliffs, and wildlife that you will only be able to see by going on a jeep tour. The actual jeep ride is fun as you cross rivers and climb up hills. We also took a hike into the glacier area, which was amazing.
However, I was not all that impressed with our guide, Ragnar. He was pretty quiet and we felt like we had to pry information about the area out of him. I would probably have given this tour another star but towards the end of the day his behavior struck me as shady. He said we would be going to the new Eyjafjallajokull Volcano Center on our way back to Reykjavik, which seemed fine to us. The Volcano Center is essentially a tourist trap - they sell a bunch of cheesy souvenirs and show a 15 minute video about the eruption. As we're getting ready to leave the lady who was running the Center says we have to pay an admission fee. I was appalled because Ragnar did not mention any additional admission fee and we had already paid nearly $300 for the excursion. We ended up paying the nearly $10 admission fee but this left a bad taste in my mouth.
Super jeep tours are great to see the country but look around at all the different companies before you decide on one and confirm what is included in the tour cost before you leave.
