We had originally booked a different hotel as we had wanted half board and they are very difficult to find in Reykjavik. Horror stories of exhorbitant food prices proved unfounded and actually, we didn't need half board, but having got it, we were then bumped by the original hotel and got put into the Holt. Tripadvisor had prepared us for the rather dark and sombre feel of the hotel and other reviews sum up this and the extensive art on show. We had room 309 at the back which was small but perfectly functional and very clean. There was no bath, but the shower was strong and they provided bathrobes which was nice. They were also quite happy for these and the towels to be taken to the Blue Lagoon, something you pay to hire if you don't take your own. Television channels were a bit limited, but they had BBC 1 and 24 hour news if you were desperate. Good free wifi in the room and throughout the hotel. The one thing that slightly let the hotel down was breakfast. There was a reasonable selection, but the cooking and waitering was done by the same person,so when they ran out of something, he couldn't do anything about it.
The highlight of the hotel was the Gallery Restaurant which was part of the building, but a separate business. Unfortunately, the hotel had not told the restaurant of the half board arrangement, so it came as a bit of a surprise to them. But once they got over the shock, they were wonderful and we were privileged to have been able to eat every evening in the best restaurant in Reykjavik within the half board price. We have put on a separate report about the Gallery and would highly recommend it.
The hotel is 5 minutes walk from the town centre, has free parking and is well positioned for the main routes out.
The hotel staff could not have been more helpful and all in all, we really enjoyed our stay there.
Overall, we had a fantastic trip and loved Iceland. Clean, friendly, terrific roads, beautiful scenery and not shackled by EU laws, everywhere was beautifully presented and very open. We hired a Polo which at £35 a day, was cheaper than taking coach tours and gave us the flexibility to do things we wouldn't have otherwise. Highly recommend Islenski Hesturinn for a memorable riding experience. Blue Lagoon, Geysir and Gulfoss were great, Perlan dome is great for lunch, did a drive to Vik and saw some gorgeous waterfalls and coast. We left desperately hoping that one day we can come back and do much much more.
Standard rooms are a bit small, so worth looking at a suite.

Thank you for your review. The miscommunication between us for the half-board was all my fault as we haven´t been receiving many of those sorts of bookings. I have now rectified the way we communicate for those instances.
In regards to breakfast, as I mention in some of my replies below, I am currently working on how we can improve there. The staffing has been a challenge as we have been much busier this year than last and therefore haven´t been able to add or train new staff as we would have liked. This can only improve.
The television selection is another thing we are working on but there are outside factors slowing that down. We have a solid 8 channel selection, which is quite good for Iceland, but a comprehensive solution for entertainment systems in Iceland is not available at the moment. We are reluctant to push improvements through in this area with more efficient solutions inevitably around the corner.
We are happy to welcome you again as soon as possible to show off our improvements.
