“Unique Iceland experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2012

My partner and I booked a morning ride with this company based on its Tripadvisor ratings and were not disapointed. He had ridden a horse only once or twice, and I had a bit more experience, but we both enjoyed it. We used the GPS co-ordinates given on the website to drive there in our rental car, it is pretty easy to find, just look out for the right street sign as you get close instead of relying entirely on the GPS like us, and parking at the neighbours farm and getting directed around the corner by a local farmer...
We were the only 2 riding, and Begga gave us very detailed instructions, along with a nice hot coffee (it was a typical Iceland day - cold, windy, cloudy and spots of rain), before we geared up with overtrousers, gloves and helmets. We wore our own rainjackets as I didn't fancy being a fluoro tourist from head to tail, but had to settle with the fluoro overtrousers as it was starting to rain a little. Then we met our steeds, furry tiny Icelandic horses, and groomed them while Begga got the riding gear on. We had a brief ride around the yard to make sure we weren't complete idiots and could stop, then lead them out to the road. It was cool riding around the lava fields, although it's not exactly out in the wild - you cross under a fairly main road. But the scenery was Icelandic and volcanic, and I really enjoyed the Tolt! So different to riding any other horse. It was great.
I would recommend wearing warm clothes at this time of year - I wore thermal underwear and was grateful! Other than that we just wore walking shoes and they were fine. There were lockers to lock your bag in, I took my camera, but didn't use it apart from in the yards, Begga took photos and emailed us a few days later.
All in all, it was fun, where else can you tolt along amongst the lavafields! I would love to go back to Iceland and take a longer trip with Begga and her horses!

“An Excellent, Unique Experience.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2012

We went horse riding through the lava fields a few days before Christmas. There were just the three of us on the tour, but Begga seemed happy to take us out. She picked us up promptly at our hotel in Reykjavik and put us at ease immediately. We had little to no horse riding experience, but Begga took her time teaching us the ‘controls’ before we went out to meet our horses. Helmets and other clothing were provided if we required them (gloves, full waterproof warm suits and rain coats). She seemed to match the horses well with our sizes and experience levels. I was happy to get the slow but intelligent horse! Begga led from the front and the three of us followed along a path through the lava fields with lovely scenery covered in snow. The horses generally seemed to know where they were going and followed Begga’s route and pace. The pace I generally found OK, although the horses did go what seemed to be too quick for us as beginners on some occasions and although we were probably perfectly safe we were nervous about falling off! Begga did ask us whether the pace was OK for us though. We were all happy to experience the ‘tölt’ gait, unique to the Icelandic horse. Begga kindly took photos of us throughout the trip and e-mailed them to us once we were back home, as we didn’t have the confidence to let go of the reigns to take our own photos!! We were probably on the horse for about an hour and a quarter in total, and the stables are only about a 20 minute drive from the centre of Reykjavik. Overall it was a fantastic experience that we would definitely recommend.

“A great riding experience run by a small family firm who really care.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2012

Believe all the reviews. This is one of the best horse riding experience days out you can have out in Iceland.
1. Islenski Hesturinn is a small, family run stable where the owners, helped by employees who take you out. They really care and want you to have a good time.
2. Safety is top of their list, with a full and really helpful briefing given inside a warm building.
3. The icelandic horses are great. The have their own character, and are fun to ride - even if you are a beginner.
4. Being the 1st of January, it was very cold with lots of snow. Everyone was offered full horse riding overalls, hats and they had all necessary kit for children.
5. After the ride we all sat around drinking hot chocolate and talking about all things icelandic - a nice way to end the day.

Many thanks for a great day out, we will be back!

“A icelandic must do: winter horse riding - just wonderfull, even w/o riding experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2012

We went for a New Year ride with Islenski Hesturinn and had a wonderful day out! Even w/o any riding experience, Brekka - the friendly leader of this small, family owned business - established a relaxed athmosphere from the very beginning on. The horses are friendly and nice to handle and any equipment you need is available (helm, winter overall, gloves) and in good shape for all participants in the small group. To go outside on a horse back and to ride through the snow was phantastic, and to experience the fast "Tölt" was even better :-)
If you like to go for horse riding -> go to Brekka!
