“Great Decor!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2013 via mobile

I loved the decor at Kex and the atmosphere in the bar downstairs. The decor is very hipster, but in a very cozy, authentic way. We had a great time in the bar downstairs during Airwaves with Seattle radio station KEXP.

A few nights later we stayed there and again- super impressed by the decor. The rooms were pretty standard.

The only suggestion I have is that using the school style metal lockers is super loud. We had an early flight to catch and there was no way to be quiet with the metal lockers. Also, the guy who checked us in at the front desk was nice but definitely didn't go out of his way to be particularly informative or helpful. Other than that everything went well.

One of the best hostels I have stayed at! The food was great, beers even better and the jazz band playing on the Tuesday night were fantastic.

Bed was really comfortable, room had plenty of plugs as well. Never had to wait for a shower and was surprisingly really quiet in the rooms. Only thing is breakfast I thought was great but a little on the expensive side.

Can't recommend this hostel enough! Would happily stay again

Went here for lunch and found a great place, nice atmosphere and great views. From outside is just a door that is labelled so doesn't look like much, but everything is on the first floor so well worth going in!

The description, pictures and other reviews of this hostel made it sound great so we booked for 2 nights and weren't disappointed. If you do stay then I recommend paying the extra for the excellent breakfast that for Iceland prices was reasonable.
We had a 4 bed dorm that was big and as the place is an old warehouse, it's all very large with plenty of chill out space downstairs. The bar and restaurant is a popular spot with other travelers and Icelandic people just popping in.
It's less than a 5 minute easy walk around the corner to the main road (Laugavegur) with all the bars and restaurants. Enjoy your stay

I have never stayed in a hostel like it! It has very quirky decor and definitely attracts both traveller and Icelandic hipsters (but not in a snobby way!). All decoration was really interesting even in the rooms which you would normally expect to be a bit plainer! Despite this it was all very clean and the bathrooms and kitchens were fully equipped. If you plan on cooking yourself at the hostel I would definitely have a look at the free food shelves though (more like a wall!). A jazz night was happening on one of the nights which created an amazing atmosphere which was easy to meet new people in. The bar is excellent! especially for Icelandic beers- which they serve in litres!! This hostel is very popular though, me and my three friends ended up in four separate rooms (which also happened to be some of the most expensive) after booking two days before (which was no big problem for us) so would not rely on turning up on the day. Breakfast and washing was also pricey... but I guess that is Iceland.

Stayed here for 6 nights during the Iceland Airwaves music festival in 2012. Stayed in a private room with a few friends. The hostel is more like an Icelandic culture museum than a hostel. It's beautifully decorated, clean, safe, the staff are helpful and the food at the restaurant/lounge is amazing. Brunch is definitely worth it! The location is ideal if you're visiting Reykjavik by foot.

This hostel is unbelievable. I've stayed in so many hostels now, it's so refreshing to finally find one that ticks all the boxes plus more! The owners of this place have poured so much love and energy into this place, it's not just a clean bed and room, it's an experience! To sum it up, awesome location, extremely friendly staff that helped book our buses etc, 3 door keycard security (front, level, room), great attached restaurant, amazing continental breakfast with great coffee. The decor is a new level, the restaurant, reception, kitchen, lounge, and everything is super creative, but not too much.. Can't say enough good things about this place, congrats to the owners, you nailed the perfect hostel experience!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
It' s the Icelandic word for "biscuit" and a social hostel in Reykjavik. What's not to love? Housed in an old biscuit factory in the heart of Reykjavik, KEX is just steps from all the bars, clubs, and music venues that give this city its legendary reputation. It's also a painless distance from late night munchies and a mind-boggling array of coffee houses, shops, and tourist attractions. Of course, you might not even want to venture outside of the hostel with all its features: a cafe and bar, lounge area, heated outdoor patio, tourist information desk, laundry room, small fitness centre, and free Wi-Fi. Two guest kitchenettes and private laundry facilities are also available. And with a variety of rooms for up to 138 guests, you'll have no problem meeting interesting, new travel buddies from exotic places. KEX oozes with personality and soul-just like our guests. Every piece of decor has a story to tell. Using salvaged materials and found objects from various sources, KEX is an organic concept blending Iceland' s past with a modern, international twist. The raw industrial spaces and vintage furnishings combine to give it a homey, eclectic feel. With the affordable nightly rates, you'll still have enough cash left over to enjoy a few pints of Viking beer or sample some local delicacies like hakarl and Brennivin. In addition to our dormitory rooms we offer three different double rooms: 1. Double Plus - 1 double bed, 1 private bathroom, linens and towels, and 1 fantastic seaside view. 2. Double Standard - 1 double bed (of the most clever convertible design in case you get tired of being so close to your travel partner), shared bathrooms, linens and towels, and if you are lucky the same fantastic view. 3. Twin - 2 single beds, linens and towels, and a better than average chance of making your friends back home quite jealous indeed. LOCATION: KEX is located in the centre of Reykjavik, with a view across the sea to Mt. Esja across the bay. The old factory that houses KEX is also home to The Living Art Museum and studios of various artists, dancers, and fashion designers. KEX is within an easy walking distance to the city's interesting nightlife, restaurants, shopping streets, cultural attractions, and other points of interest in the city centre. To reach those places a little further afield, the hostel is well connected to the city's public bus system. ... more   less
