“Well-located and plenty of space”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2012

We stayed two nights in a studio apartment in Vatnsstigur 11 at the end of May on arrival in Iceland for the first time – and it was a great introduction to this country. While the foyer and corridors are a bit chipped and worn, our apartment, no 304, was very spacious, light (on a corner it had lots of windows) and had excellent facilities – cooking, lounge and dining. It is also well-located, out of the noisy areas but still very convenient - two very short blocks from the main street, Laugavegur, where there are ATMs, a supermarket and tourist information, yet also handy to the waterfront and a car rental agency Although there is no reception desk (access details for your room/apartment come with your booking), there is someone on general duty and the tourist information offices are very helpful with most things.

My partner and I were looking for a reasonably priced place to stay for a couple of nights in Reykjavik and were a bit disheartened by some of the hotel prices. We didn't want anything fancy but found it hard to find comfortable looking basic accommodation with a private bathroom to suit our budget. The welcome apartments appeared on laterooms so we decided to give it a try...great choice! The accommodation was un-staffed but we had no problems gaining access with the codes they sent us, we found our room compact, clean, and comfortable. The shower room was tiny but that was the only (very slight) negative, and didn't really bother us. The kitchenette was well equipped with toaster, kettle etc and a table & chairs so we could breakfast on a budget, and the location was great with the main shopping/cafe/bar areas downtown just minutes walk away. Our room was on the 4th (top) floor and had low angled ceilings so if you have a bad back maybe request a lower floor! But it gave the room a nice character and was a lovely peaceful place to rest after a busy day. Free wifi, free luggage storage, and even a free-use computer and free landline phone on the ground floor. Couldn't ask for more for a superb price relative to other Reykjavik accommodation. We also booked an extra apartment for a friend who needed somewhere to stay with his daughter for one night. His apartment was booked as the same spec (standard twin) but was bigger, with a sitting area with sofa which our room didn't have. I suppose it just depends what is available at the time you book. All round both rooms were ideal though, and we would highly recommend the welcome apartments for a stay in this superb city.

Stayed three nights and this was a nice light and airy apartment. The cooking facilities were more than adequate and the room was clean. Because of the light nights it would have been good to have had curtains as well as blinds as there was a line of lightness around the edge of the blinds.
The wifi was excellent and the bed comfortable. Altogether a pleasant stay in the beautiful area of Reykjavik.

Room Tip: We had the first floor, maybe on a higher level it might be quieter at night from people talking.

Nice clean apartment close to city center. We stayed in a family room which was a good size. Clean and updated although the hallway was a bit outdated. Bathroom was very small but ok by Iceland standards. Beds were comfortable, a bit firm but not too much. Location is the best part, right in the middle of all attractions including walking distance to great restaurants, main bus station, shops and old harbour.

The Welcome Apartments was very clean and had an excellent location within short walking distance to downtown (shopping, bars, grocery stores). You book and receive an email with a code to enter the building and get your apartment key. There is no reception on hand (part of why it is such a good deal) but there is a number you can call if you need help. We booked a studio apartment which was fairly large for European standards. The room was very clean and there were blackout blinds which were much appreciated. The kitchenette seemed well stocked and would be ideal for self-caterers. We stayed at the beginning of our trip (May 19, 2012) and would have stayed again at the end but the rates went up significantly in June so snag a deal in the shoulder season.

Room Tip: Book in the shoulder season for a better deal as prices increased as of June 1st (as with most accom...

Stayed for 4 nights, very basic, but close to the city centre, although it had a microwave and a 2 ring plug in hob there was no oven and so this restricted the food that you can prepare (we stayed in room 201), but this would not stop us from using these appartments when we visit again.

Room Tip: Request one with an oven

A 5 min walk from the town centre and the water front. Well heated and provided all the basics like shampoo, shower gel, loo roll, towels, tea towel, washing up liquid and cooking oil. Big TV with several UK channels. We eat a lot at cafe Laundromat - very reasonable, friendly and trendy. Did all of our tours with Grey Line - brilliant! All in all excellent value for money.
