My wife booked a full day with Eskimo Tours from Reykjavik . After seeing several grumpy looking drivers from tour buses come into the hotel reception I was beginning to wonder of this was going to a good day ! Then a chap came in through the doors with a smile on his face , he somehow knew it was us (me,my wife , my best friend and his wife) and said hi "day tour with Eskimo"?
We all said yes like excited school children ready for a day out at Alton Towers! His name was Lucic or something similar , I'm useless with names !
From that moment on he kept us entertained , jokes - some good, some bad but all better than the ones I know , his local knowledge was excellent , despite boring him with questions about Volcano's , thermal energy , why there were so few trees and what's the smallest Penguin he has ever seen ( my wife asked that one ) he knew all the answers. Now you must understand Luc loves his truck , and I mean he loves it like the first teddy bear you ever owned , and quite rightly because it was one of the famous Icelandic "Super Jeeps" .
Imagine a standard Mitsubishi Jeep , got that in your mind ? Well now imagine what $30,000 U/S can do to a truck designed by a 8 year old child with a wild streak .
Yep a truck that looked like it has taken steroids , wheels so big that my wife had to climb on my back to get in , an engine that roared like a lion with tooth ache , I loved it !
First stop nice cafe at Gullfoss falls , only a 15 min break for a coffee as we would be back later , then gradually the roads got worse and worse , each bump made my kidney's swap places with my liver , " I have trick up sleeve " Luc said . We stopped and watched in the sub zero temperature as Luc let most of the air from his tyres , the girls meanwhile stayed inside the car and talked about ironing and dish washers or something .
The ride was now very smooth despite heading off road across boulder strewn rivers and up the sides of ridiculously steep hills, great fun !! The more we laughed the more the little boy in Luc came out to play ! Soon we were at the snowmobile centre getting kitted out for the ride ( see other post) .
We headed back to Gullfoss for lunch and a walk around the water falls amazing! A short drive to the geyser called Geysir ! This was as predictable as xmas and kept us entertained for an hour or so .
We finished up by a walk around a section of the biggest lake in Iceland , crystal clear freezing melt waters form deep clear pools , fall in and you will either drown or have a heart attack . Despite encouraging my wife to have a refreshing dip she declined ( only joking love x) We then walked across a rift in the earths crust to a spot where the first Icelandic parliament was formed , this rift is between two large plates in the earths crust , one being the North American and the other being the Eurasian plate , they are ripping the land apart ( see I did listen Luc!)
A small walk to a view point which takes in some fabulous scenery and before we knew it we were being dropped off at the hotel . The most amazing day created, moulded and served up by Luc , unforgettable no question .
