“Great friendly hostel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2012

Just back from my stay at the Backpackers. It's a budget hostel and that's what you get, the dorms are smaller than other hostels I've stayed in but the beds were comfortable and warm. To be honest I was out and about so much I only really used the room to sleep. It does get noisy at the weekends as it's on the main street but chances are you'll be out too (or if not the hostel sell ear plugs!)

Bathrooms/showers are clean and I never has to queue, there is a kitchen on the 4th floor that you can use- basic but does the trick and has a fantastic view of the cathedral. WiFi access is free but you'll have to be in the bar or the 2nd floor to get good access which didn't really bother me.

Location wise it's perfect, central to everything you need really! The airport buses drop off outside the door and most tour companies will pick up from right outside.

The best thing about this hostel though... the staff! Never been somewhere with such friendly and enthusiastic staff. They sorted out most of my tours and re-arranged if there were cancellations. Always keen to give advice and tips on places to visit, places to eat or drink. They also run events most evenings in the bar so you get to know all your fellow travellers and at the weekend have live music/theme nights or bar crawls!

Will definately be returning!!

Location, Location, Location! Situated in the centre of downtown and within walking distance of everything downtown has to offer. They have the friendliest, happiest and most helpful staff. The 4 bed dorms are spacious and the beds comfortable. It's a well thought out hostel; there is a cosy lounge room and 4 uber clean showers/4 toilets on every floor, well equipped kitchen, free WiFi, and an extremely efficient one stop tour booking service at reception. Stay here with confidence.

Stayed here for six night during the Icelandic Airwaves festival and a knit tour. Excellent location but noisy (to be expected). The location is center of Reykjavik and across the street from a coffee shop with good internet access because it is woeful at the hostel. There is no access above the second floor.

Staff is friendly, and willing to help plan trips. They were really great. The hostel is also clean.

Guys in the next room to us on the 4th floor had laptops, phones, cameras and other equipment stolen. Their room did have a door access to the balcony but hard to figure out how someone got into the room.

Wine was also taken from the refridge but probably not a good idea to put it there.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 4th floor--it is quieter and you will get your daily exercise doing the stairs...

The hostel has an excellent location-main street, short walk everywhere. The rooms are rather tiny and like in otherhostels in Iceland you have to pay extra for a blanket so most people sleep in their sleeping bags. Shared bathrooms were OK, kitchen well equiped butplaced on the 4thfloor only.

I stayed in a 4 bedroom, and the room was alright. Spartan, but clean. Only complaint is that the bunks are a little 'old school' and can be very noisy if you're trying to climb up without waking anyone else. Loved how clean the bathrooms were as well. The staff was very friendly and very helpful. The location is prime-- right in the middle of things and close to BSI. It's definitely noisy at night, especially if there's a game on so bring good earplugs if you're a light sleeper!

My friend and I stayed in a private room on the 4th floor. The room is very basic--clean beds, little shelf area, and a shared kitchen. Check out the free guest to guest food before hitting the nearby grocery store. My only complaint is that one of the bathrooms had a really slow toilet; at least 20mins to flush. If light bothers you, bring an eyemask. This location is fantastic--right in the middle of the pedestrian area (shops, bars, restaurants, etc.). The people who work here are helpful and friendly, and there are activities that they put together (pub crawls, fooseball tournaments, etc.). I would definately recommend staying here.

Room Tip: pick a room with the kitchen access to save money
